Bryan Jones - Smoke Break (08-12-2009)

Bryan Jones - Smoke Break (Midtempo House MIx) - December 2009 by djbryanjones

Maybe the tracklist will convince some of you to give it a listen:

01 Trus'me - Browns - Prime Numbers
02 6th Borough Project - McLovin - Permanent Vacation
03 Floating Points - Love Me Like This - R2 Records
04 6th Borough Project - How Can I Show You - Delusions of Grandeur
05 Eddie C - One With The Stars - Sleazy Beats
06 Linkwood - Who La La - Firecracker Recordings
07 Crazy P - The Hit - Kolour Recordings
08 Floating Points - Truly - Eglo Records
09 Lovebirds - Out In The Night - OM Records
10 Telemusic - Baby's Band (Leo Zero Edit) - CDR
11 Knee Deep - Sweet Love - Knee Deep Records
12 Shur-I-Kan - Fantasy - Freerange
13 Makam - New York G - Sushitech
14 Lovebirds - Operator - OM Records
15 6th Borough Project - Miss World (Soul Tourist Remix) - Delusions of Grandeur
16 Nils Nuernberg - Caught A Glimpse - 8Bit
17 Kink - Fish Feeling - Kolour Recordings
18 Colette - Think You Want It (Pezzner Remix) - OM Records
19 Jimpster - Dangly Panther (Joris Voorn Remix) - Freerange
20 David West & Inkfish - Ghetto Feel - Tolerant Recordings

I listened to about 10 mins of it before I had to turn it off. That mixing is gash. I'm sorry, but a dope ass tracklisting alone does not constitute mix of the year.

The first 2 transitions aren't that bad actually. Perhaps not top of the shelf Diggers-style, but they're okay.
Track selection seems decent too. Dunno whats wrong with it

/edt; it's quite a good/nice actually. Going to burn this on cd-r

I actually listened to the first 10 mins after i read his post and i was like... what the hell is this guy talking about, it sounds ok to me

i was expecting a major trainwreck throughout ...

Its true the mixing isnt top notch, but i've heard worst, both aspects of a mix must be "near perfect" preferably sure, but i dont complain too much when there's a decent effort (personal stance), especially for that guy who's used to the jackin stuff, was a bit of a switch. Trainwrecks = moodymann (mix i posted in forum not too long ago), i still love his mixes.

Also, i stand corrected as i heard this one after fully listening to a lovebirds 2009 mix (the october mix). So i changed my selection for "mix of the year" .

Here's a track i think we'll all agree is freakin noice
Thanks to Cosmic Boogie (Stu Robinson) for the find through his fb fanpage.

Charles Mann - Shonuff (Superbreak Edit)

SHONUFF (SUPERBREAK EDIT) - CHARLES MANN by SUPERBREAK

Want to hear a train wreck, though its considered as a good set?
Listen to Larry Heard's 12-04-2009 set @ Trouw, the one of almost 6 hrs, posted not so long ago ..

Posted by Angelsky on Mar-04-2010 20:02:

Still doing ...

I dont know, I was other day shoping at Dance-Tunes.com and noticed that old style is coming back. Lots of track's shakeing a flint of what tracks had past year and going melodic oldschool...

Well, perhaps moodymann is even worse ... but for a reknowned name as Mr. Heard I expected something else (although it was one of his first few sets I've heard). Some awefully bad transitions in there

Posted by wotyzoid on Mar-04-2010 21:10:

I've seen 'em both and Kenny is definitely less technically inclined. I must also say that people who are anal about mixing annoy the shit out of me. They both play phenomenally.

Posted by cherrybarry on Mar-04-2010 21:13:

for these nu-disco, 80's funk, etc. mixes, i really don't mind what the transitions are like. it's all about the track selection, and the dj having a clear narrative throughout the mix. plus, most of these tracks are suited to the mixtape-style anyway. in fact, i'd say a good mixtape is harder to make than a dj mix. you no longer have the beat-matched transitions to hide the fact that you can't select the proper tunes

Posted by bigsnail on Mar-04-2010 22:46:

moodymann plays great tunes. he drops "William de Vaughn - Just Be Thankful" in the middle of his DEMF set from last year....fuckin perfect. wish i couldve been there for that.

agreed (less annoyed by mixing critics then you are hehe, but its true its the aspect of mixes that i give less importance)

I didn't say anything bad about the track selection, I just prefer more harmonically viable mixing.

Posted by ThaMaestro on Mar-05-2010 00:46:

I guess in the end it all comes down to a transition which is smooth,
and doesnt necessarily needs to last long or has to be filled with high
skills. It just annoys if you hear a seriously unbeatmatched transition
for a while, as if the dj pays no attention in going from A to B ....
and that Bryan Jones set, well, that one is, as I said before,
properly/decent mixed. But listening to Heard, although its a great
set, 'hurts' every here n there.

hype of the moment, i still think its a sick set especially the start, killer combination starting with "Browns", floating points track, insane continuation right there. But i take off the title out of Bryan's hand while giving him a kleenex box (clean xbox hahaha,ok not funny),and give it to Lovebirds for 2009 (give me a break i havent heard all the mixes that has been done in 2009, yes there might be a better mix). IMO, Lovebird's october 2009 mix is mad, there's no dead points in there, no "its okay i guess" parts in his mix. Yeah, its an hour, but its freaking lovebirds. Just saying "lovebirds" should be enough.NUFF SAID!
( Shout out to all "the revenge" mixes and Tensnake's resident advisor mix in late december (that i recall), and all cosmic boogie mixes i havent heard yet)

Posted by lücid on Mar-05-2010 04:55:

not sure if this has been posted yet, but there's a good amount of mixes and live sets available from Greg Wilson on his SoundCloud page.

http://soundcloud.com/gregwilson

i know his Essential Mix was mentioned way earlier in this thread, but if any of you have slept on that, i highly recommend you check it out. for me personally it's one of the top mixes of 2009, and probably one of my favorite Essential Mixes of all time, ever, in the history of the universe.

seeing the man twice in 5 days this month. can't wait!
