Originally posted by Johnny Jon Its true the mixing isnt top notch, but i've heard worst, both aspects of a mix must be "near perfect" preferably sure, but i dont complain too much when there's a decent effort, especially for that guy who's used to the jackin stuff, was a bit of a switch. Trainwrecks = moodymann (mix i posted in forum not too long ago), i still love his mixes. Also, i stand corrected as i heard this one after fully listening to a lovebirds 2009 mix (the october mix). So i changed my selection for "mix of the year" ![]() |
Still doing ...
I dont know, I was other day shoping at Dance-Tunes.com and noticed that old style is coming back. Lots of track's shakeing a flint of what tracks had past year and going melodic oldschool...

I've seen 'em both and Kenny is definitely less technically inclined. I must also say that people who are anal about mixing annoy the shit out of me. They both play phenomenally.
for these nu-disco, 80's funk, etc. mixes, i really don't mind what the transitions are like. it's all about the track selection, and the dj having a clear narrative throughout the mix. plus, most of these tracks are suited to the mixtape-style anyway. in fact, i'd say a good mixtape is harder to make than a dj mix. you no longer have the beat-matched transitions to hide the fact that you can't select the proper tunes
moodymann plays great tunes. he drops "William de Vaughn - Just Be Thankful" in the middle of his DEMF set from last year....fuckin perfect. wish i couldve been there for that.

I guess in the end it all comes down to a transition which is smooth,
and doesnt necessarily needs to last long or has to be filled with high
skills. It just annoys if you hear a seriously unbeatmatched transition
for a while, as if the dj pays no attention in going from A to B ....
and that Bryan Jones set, well, that one is, as I said before,
properly/decent mixed. But listening to Heard, although its a great
set, 'hurts' every here n there.

theres 2 others but the links are not working anymore
hype of the moment, i still think its a sick set especially the start, killer combination starting with "Browns", floating points track, insane continuation right there. But i take off the title out of Bryan's hand while giving him a kleenex box (clean xbox hahaha,ok not funny),and give it to Lovebirds for 2009 (give me a break i havent heard all the mixes that has been done in 2009, yes there might be a better mix). IMO, Lovebird's october 2009 mix is mad, there's no dead points in there, no "its okay i guess" parts in his mix. Yeah, its an hour, but its freaking lovebirds. Just saying "lovebirds" should be enough.NUFF SAID!
( Shout out to all "the revenge" mixes and Tensnake's resident advisor mix in late december (that i recall), and all cosmic boogie mixes i havent heard yet)
not sure if this has been posted yet, but there's a good amount of mixes and live sets available from Greg Wilson on his SoundCloud page.

i know his Essential Mix was mentioned way earlier in this thread, but if any of you have slept on that, i highly recommend you check it out. for me personally it's one of the top mixes of 2009, and probably one of my favorite Essential Mixes of all time, ever, in the history of the universe.
seeing the man twice in 5 days this month. can't wait!
