100,000,000,000 galaxies in the universe. Let's say 1% of the galaxies have solar systems.

1,000,000,000 solar systems. Let's say 1% of these have planets capable of supporting life.

10,000,000 Planets capable of supporting life. Let's say 1% of these planets actually DO support life.

100,000 Planets with life. Let's say 1% of these planets are actually useful to our UFO purposes and support intelligent life.

1,000 Planets with intelligent life on them.

According to this model, we are left with 1000 planets in the universe that have intelligent life on them. Of course, what's to say it's 1% all the way down the chain?

That was the gist of his argument. I might not have gotten it perfectly because I did it from memory - all I remembered were the last 2 steps, the 1% thing, and the final number...so I just worked backwards.

ah yes...that's what it was...my numbers were waaaaaaay off hehehe...and i'm pretty sure that 1,000 was his finishing number too...

The numbers were way off compared to what? Sagans guesswork?

He stated that he had seen it in Astronomy class, and was wondering if someone else could properly explain it.

I wouldn't call it guesswork, I'd call it educated guesswork. As was Floorfiller's original post.

well obviously someone like Carl Sagan or Stephen Hawking knows a little bit more about the universe than i do...i remember seeing the thing that Tran3 posted, but forgot how it worked...

Posted by Boomer187 on May-12-2004 19:02:

yeah there is a huge huge fundamental flaw in sagans reasoning, that is, it is all guess work based on intuitive appeal.

whose to say it is 1%. do we know all the galaxies in the universe? and how can we say 1% have life.

I wouldn't put too much weight on Sagan's opinion.

the model isn't to show that there are 1,000 other planets of life, but instead to suggest a line of reasoning that brings us to a conclusion that it is possible...the numbers aren't important...its the concept...

Ok why the fuck do you people asume it was Amrican technology....WHy cant it be Mexican. You people underestimate the maxicans.

Let me remind u at one time Aztec and Mayan technology was far more advance than....any thing in the world.Ok Ancient Egyptian's was some what the same.

And dont even go there with Aztec and Mayan Astrology (is that a word)
They were ahead of every ancient Civilization when it came to astrology.

Mexico had an airforce before the US did.

It's entirely possible that it was Mexican Technology.

Sure at one time, but not anymore. Just because something happened in the past does not mean it will happen again.

Astrology...you're kidding right? You're arguing that they were ahead when it came to a pseudoscience?

Ermmmm, you surely need history lessons as mayas, (more ancient than aztecs and no relation to them)may have shettled in mesoamerica
at 1000b.c BUT have not developed a civilisation since 200a.d. Their classical period dated from 200-700 a.d. By that time (200a.d)in europe a few things were happening like... ermmmmm, roman empire (have u ever heard of it) had allready collapsed, giving rise to the byzantines (also called easter romean empire, or, romean empire now leaded by greeks ) And u know.... Romans and byzantines were a LIIIITTTLEEE BIIITT more developed than mayas Aztecs have not developed a civilisation since 1300 a.d!!!!The peak was reached by the time the spanish arrived and u must know the rest of the history...(Spanish by that time again were a little biiiiittt more developed than them)
Oh mind you, egypt have ruined from 3000b.c(!!!!!, evidence suggest they were there from 6000bc!!!!) with the first pyramid build on 2800-2700b.c by Imhotep!!!!! who was a great architect, emperor and physicist. So, egyptians again were A LITTTTLLLEEEE BBBIITTT older than mayas.....

That's when you realize that they suck your brains out through your genitalia. They're only here for information. They'll be back to take over the world, later.

Well if it was mexican technology than why is the mexican military acting all surprised? But even if it was super-secret mexican technology that they didn't want the airforce to know about, why would they fly this secretive technology in an area where the Mexican airforce is patrolling? But let's assume that perhaps the Mexicans are not so good at conducting secretive test operations and these flyboys unexpectedly saw something they shouldn't have seen, why then would the Mexican military release the video to the public. Ok even THEN let's assume that they released it because it's not that secret and it's technology that's no big deal ... why then wouldn't the mexican gov't step forward to say what it is? Any which way you look at it, it doesn't make a lot of sense for it to be Mexican technology ... no offense to mexican technology, I love taco bell.

Just kidding

I dont get why people just assume that if aliens do exist, they are so far advanced from us. They could be, they could not be. You cant just assume that they are more advanced than us. Also, maybe they are just doing the same thing as us in space, research.
