Last two times I saw Marco V I fell asleep :-/

No, LITERALLY fell asleep, as in scrambled to find a corner, sat down, hung my head between my knees and drifted off for a fair while. Both times. True I was kinda tired but the stuff he played gave me absolute ZERO motivation or mental stimulation and made my state ALOT worse, I wouldn't go watch him again if you paid me.

Posted by Tranceguy1 on Jun-19-2004 18:52:

Well, whether a better DJ or not, as a producer he is much much better...

Posted by isoterra on Jun-19-2004 18:59:

I wouldn't say there was alot in it actually... I personally prefer J00f's productions but technically I would've thought they were around the same standard... progressive tech trance kinda (only with Marco's sound being alot harder)

I would have to agree with sandstorm here.... all you people are naming all these djs that are better in you opinion but have no tracks to prove anything or any good live performences.

This thread is about who is the best as a dj and a producer all togther NOT just producing as some of you missed the point and cant read. You people wonder why avb/tiesto/pvd/ferry are the top 4, well thats because they are the best dj's that at the same time have good productions. Sure some of you think otherwise that others have better productions but can they get the crowd goin like these 4??

The dj mag poll is not a top 100 of who is the best producer, but somone who is a great dj and at the same time a great producer...see what im getting at here??

You can hate armin all you want and laugh it out but the fact is he is up there at top 4 for a reason. BTW what has he done to you so much that made you hate him so bad?? just out of curiousity.

Yes, and that reason being he is a very popular DJ, which does not under any circumstances in this case mean a very highly skilled DJ.

i'd say l-vee and m.i.k.e. have about 80 tracks each to prove something

live perfomances, i'll admit than on that matter i'm not an expert cause i've never been able to see a trance dj, but john 00 fleming's set last year at global gathering was great and it received good reviews from the people there.

well mikey answered the first part for me, thank you micahel

and for the second part, id like to just say that i find his music mind numbingly boring and not very exclusive anymore and very unpioneering, where as tijs and ferry went off and did theyre own thing and found new niches for themselves, armin is still trying to squeeze that last drop of tommy k from the bottle... time to move on armin.
that is a reason why i dont like his music. and now here is why i hate him.

a year and a half ago kai tracid made his debut at gatecrasher my favourite DJ in my favourite club, after waiting for 3 years for him to come to england, so anyways i took my picture disc of 4 just 1 day with me to get it signed by kai. i gave kai my copy and asked if he would play MY copy of the track cos it was blatantly obvious he was gonna drop 4 just 1 day cos it was brand new then. so anyways its kais last tune, he plays 4 just 1 day... i look behind the DJ box my copy is still standing there, i was gutted, so i shouted kai and pointed to my copy, and i was surrounded by lots of ppl that i either knew or didnt know, and they were all shouting him as they knew how much of a tracid fan i am.

kai turns around looks at my record and looks at me like as if to say 'shit sorry mate i forgot' so anyways he takes my copy and whacks it on the decks and was gonna mix it in straight after his copy and i was over the moon, he was cueing it up, then armin came in the DJ box as the BIG SUPER STAR he is, and demanded to come on the decks and kai looks at me and shrugs like to say sorry mate, nothing i can do. proper gutted, kai signs my vinyl for me. then armin takes over and kills the atmosphere with 5 mins of ambience, then proceeds with one of the most boring and dull sets ive ever heard in my life. so there you have it, THE reason why i HATE armin, ruining a perfect night on more than 1 level

EDIT: and just so you know im not basing my hatred on one incident... ive seen armin spin on various occaissions and hes been utterly mediocre each time, which is pretty crap going since hes ~4 in the world eh?. and even more so he was by far the worst DJ of the night on that kai tracid night, amidst solar stone, rank 1, kai and sumone else cant remember hoo

Posted by Whip_lash on Jun-20-2004 00:31:

Well thank you for that explaination, was just curious thats all. I personally like his sets because he plays my fav type of trance. I guess everyone just has different tastes then .

sandstorm: great thread for proving how much of an arrogant patronising little prick you are.

In anwser to the original ques Ferry, PvD and Tiesto are a big deal because they were in the right place at the right time, been involved in the trance scene since the mid/late 90s when it really kicked off and thus are more established (especially the case for ferry who IMHO did more than any other dj in 1998/9). I dont feel armin is in the same league production wise at all. Of cousre there are other great producders but very few have had the consistency of releasing top quality (and varied) tunes for the past 6 years.

I must admit i dont think much of Paul van Dyks productions but really rate him as a dj. Djing wise i have seen ALOT of djs and when i have seen PvD and Ferry there has been a diff kind of energy surrounding them, Armin has been a bit hit and miss and only seen Tiesto once (briefly) so cant form an opinion although his sets do have a certain je ne sais quois about them.

Producers will come and go but it is alot harder for djs to become established. Im hearing very good things about Mark Norman and have been impressed by Adam Sheridan, Jon Obir and Phynn (only internet sets from Phynn but top quality )

strange gatecrasher lineup of Kai, Armin, solarstone and rank1. ive seen armin a few times now mostly very mediocre but once (at slinky) he completely rocked it. probably the best set i have ever seen and looked as tho he was enjoying it. im intrigued to see what he is like at Global (as he is on "home" turf.) quite like to go and seem him at a one of his all-nighters but there are plenty of djs id rather see before armin and dont think he deserves no. 4 spot

Ferry, Paul, and Tiesto all deserve their place among trance DJs, and not merely because of their raw skill at the decks. Each has kept the sound of trance moving into new territory over the years through a combination of track selection, innovative production, and record promotion.

Contrary to the "DJ" title, original production is key to being on the top of the trance heap these days. Some see a problem with that, claiming that Tiesto, Ferry, and Paul are not the best DJs, technically speaking, in the world, and thus do not deserve their recognition. While it is true that better DJs exist, the burden of production has become an integral part of modern DJ culture. To be a top DJ you can't merely manipulate the records; you must help make the records, and in a way that moves the sound forward. Ferry, Paul, and Tiesto have all done this successfully, and hold their place because they have made core contributions to the genre in addition to playing well.

Are there people who can use three or more tables, mix flawlessly, drop samples, and construct better sets compared to those three? Probably. But I guarantee not a single one can remotely compare to them in terms of production ability, and that's become the limiting factor in today's trance DJ culture.

In my opinion, the top five would include Marco V and John OO Fleming. Both are technically skilled DJs and accomplished producers whose track selection and original work have trailblazed whole new styles of trance.

By the end of 2002 Armin appeared set to inherit the trance empire from Tiesto, but he's eschewed innovation in favor of propagating all this shallow, cookie-cutter Dutch trance garbage. Unfortunate, really. He doesn't deserve to be anywhere near Tiesto, Ferry, and Paul van Dyk for the sole reason that he is driving trance into further mediocrity.

100% agreed not for obvious reasons, but i really couldnt hav said it any better myself

Summary taken from the 'dance years' DJ retrospective:

Ferry Corsten -

Probably the best of this bunch, as he's been able to reinvent himself, produces himself and has had consistent success and has a good ear for melody.

Really made his name DJing internationally off the back of the MOS in 98/99.

Paul Van Dyk

Highly over-rated. Two or three productions good productions over a period of at least 6 years and hasn't changed his productions style at all which isn't impressive really. 'For An Angel' brought him overnight success and since then he hasn't delivered as big a record.

DJing hit and miss - sometimes really off the beaten track and bores crowds, sometimes good.

Tiesto

Best works considered to be Urban Train although it was the Tiesto mix of Delerium that brought him international fame. Shame he's not actually a producer but a superb hype machine loved by patriotic dutch around the world.

DJing occasionally good but often terrible when he tries styles that often don't often agree with anyone on the dance floor.

Armin Van Burren

Failed to have a massive international hit but has released a series of nice, but very similar sounding trance records none of which could be deemed 'classics'. A great example of being in the right place at the right time.

DJing is usually good, sticks to what he knows unlike some of the others who want to be looked at as 'cooler'. Sometimes misses the plot when insterting certain records though.

what he said

sandstorm, do you know this thing called 'opinion'?

imo m.i.k.e. and l-vee are better than all of those, yes. why?

m.i.k.e. - elements of life
m.i.k.e. - sunrise at palamos
exposure - magic impuls
moon project - moments are forever
virtua trancer - sex after dinner
the gift - love angel (m.i.k.e remix)
aspiral - music is (dub mix)
absolute - mono sex
return of the native - morphosis
return of the native - the lost tale
plastic boy - silverbath
plastic boy - dahab
tribal warriors - spirits in love
push - strange world (2000 remake)
push - universal nation
ofra haza - love song (m.i.k.e. vs zigi remix)
-----
fire & ice - para siempre
antidote - sciabada
airwave - ladyblue
airwave - i want to believe
airwave - save me
cape town - touch the stars, and talk to the skies
antidote - teleporting
lolo - melody
planisphere - totem
planisphere - teardrop
planisphere - frogger
airwave - innerspace
airwave - another dimension
the green martian - wizardry

imo all of these are better than those four 'gods' have ever made in terms of production, except for a few occasional outstanding tracks:

albion - air
armin - blue fear
cygnus x - the orange theme (moonman remix)
rising star - clear blue moon
veracocha - carte blanche
tiesto & junkie xl - obsession
pvd - autumn
pvd - for an angel
(edit, i knew i was missing a couple: )
tiesto - suburban train
eon - pocket damage

but that's pretty much about it. i'm not the biggest fan of the gouryella's and such. the point is, i have an opinion and fairly good arguments to support it, and your answer is to laugh to my opinion. i know this is ridicule and pointless, but.... shut the fuck up, really.

yes you are a moron. If you feel like saying m.i.k.e. and l-vee are better producers fine, but that has NOTHING to do with this thread. M.i.k.e & L-vee can't dj for shit. Which is the point of this thread, and why the top 3 are where they are today. What's your opinion on M.i.k.e & L-vee's mixing ability?

at some point people started asking for better producers, so i gave them. i agree that they aren't that good when mixing.

That is exactly my point, and why the top few are more famous then the rest of the producers/djs.

fair enough, i was only pissed cause you laughed at my opinion which is no better or worse than yours

Posted by DJ A.i on Jun-20-2004 16:49:

i dont know if anyone wrote this or not but everyone seems to be compareing the OLD school with the new. which u cant do.... all the people that lived through forbidden fruit, for an angel, out of the blue, gouryella..etc will always think those three mentioned(ferry, tiesto, pvd) will be the best(and i'm one of them). and for those of you that are living in the trance scene now, you will not understand how revolutionary these producers/dj were. i do admit that trance has come a long way and that we do have great "new school" producers/dj now... but u cant take away what those three have done for the scene. I mean, listen to those songs i mentioned above.... all classics that will go down in history.

few weeks ago, i saw a recent video clip of armin spinning at global gathering(i think) and he laid down Veracocha - carte blanche... dayam the place went insane!!!! this is the kind of effect that forbidden fruit, for an angel, out of the blue and gouryella has for people that listened to trance when those songs were first released. thats how good of producers they are.. we still go crazy when those tracks are played!
