I wanna know some opnions on a MD player from those who have them. But don't give me just positives I wanna hear some negatives too. Right now, I'm completely for mp3 players. Somebody convince me as to why MD's are better than mp3s

Negatives:

-LP4 sucks

-LP2 is great, but you will need an 80 minute disc and it only holds 2 CDs (like ure normal trance recordings that are over 74 minutes)

-Fast Forwarding is KIND of tedious at times, theres a slight delay (like half a second) before it fast forwards after u press and hold "fast forward" but, pressing pause and fast forward goes REALLY fast

-you must use sony's ATRAC format when downloading from PC, this means all MP3s must first be converted to ATRAC then downloaded, however, im more than sure sony will be switching over to MP3 on newer minidiscs, weve had first generations Hi-MDs for a while now, its about time sony released some new ones, with improved battery life, and MP3 support and smaller size.

-Only new Hi-MDs hold 1Gb of info

-skipping from track to track is not instant, theres a half a second tops delay

-new Hi-MD models have like 30 something hours of battery life, but only around 15 on one charge using the external gumstick battery (still much better than a fucking ipod, an replacement batteries are cheap and tiny, thus making it truly portable)

Keep in mind, that MD is also GAPLESS!!!!!!! All other MP3 players (except for one or two, like the sony HD1,2,3 and rio karma) have a pause when advancing to the next track. Sony MDs and Sharps (aiwais, panasonics and others) do not have this problem. So for us trance freaks, gapless is gold!!

Hope this helps!

And now for the good stuff.......

MY Sony MZ-N910 (which i love to death)

1) it is probably the smallest portable device that can last 114 hours, or anywhere over 50 hours. battery life is simply stunning. Size - Battery life ratio will probably be the best on mine (there are some others wich do a little bit better, but those are players only, mine records).

2) Size.....its extremely small....its so much smaller then everything else (except for those flash media mp3 players that cant take more media, like the fixed 256 or 512 megs of space)

3) Battery and Life: any time my battery dies, i can put in a new one, on the go, anytime, anywhere. this allows me to have about 75 hours of playtime with two gumstick batteries (noone will achieve sonys claimed battery life unless under certain conditions). Also, All sony MDs (afaik) have adapters, wich connect a case that holds a AA to the MD giving you doubled battery life. Therefor, battery life is almost NEVER an issue on MD.

4) LINE IN. The fact that i can record from ANY source is a major plus. Being a DJ means i gotta somehow record my stuff. Plus, i can record shows of my friends at clubs since i spin, and, best of all, recording live sets from Digitally Imported internet radio. BIG plus. (plus recording lectures at school, and i will be doing some experimental outdoor recording for a design project) Versatility with this is amazing, it will do everything.

5) Removable media. Perfect. I can take a disc, pop it in, take it, chose from any i want, throw in a new one, etc etc. I like the fact that i can store music at home and keep it safe. Also, MDs are not prone to scratches or breakage. And if ure MD drops and breaks, ure MD is fine. Kinna nice knowing that it wont fuckup.

6) Weight, although not the most important of the bunch, it does play a major role if ure gonna put it into ure pocket. Take an ipod or zen or something. they stick out cuz theyre big, then they sag cuz theyre heavy as fuck. Most MDs, and almost every New MD, is extremely light, mine weighs around 100 grams, ipods are much more.

7) Style: when ure a metrosexual, you will not tolerate a nasty design like a rio karma or something fugly. Also, all of u designers here will agree, the design of the sony MD is pretty slick, either in orange or silver, its sexy, as is the Cowon iAudio M3L or new Sony NW-HD3 (not out yet in N. America, but released in UK and Japan)

8) Sound: Well, MD is known to be the best of the best, and it is, some people actually prefer MD over CDs. The Major advantage of MD over most other units, is the customizable 6 band equalizer. And i truly love this feature. Especially when i have some tracks that dont give me enough bass and i want more, without hindering the batter life (unlike iPod).

9) Versatility: Hands down, the best, the ability to record from any source with line in and get identical sound in SP mode or almost identical in LP2 is incredible. I use my MD to record my DJ mixes. Thats how much trust ive put into it.

My toy:

refer to my post above ure last one.

if u want reliability and your willing to sacrifice a huge library for 1GB per disc, then yes, you will want MD. Personally, i find 10gb and over useless, i never listened to 10gb when i had my ipod. Find me an MP3 player that plays 5gb of music on one charge, and then I'll be sold. This is the main reason why i would actually go for an MD, because it CAN do this, and with the ability to add extra discs, at a fair price (10 bucks i think) for 1GB which also acts as HD, is beautiful.

OK. I've messed with MD from 2000 till 2002, when my third one in two years broke down. One of them (Sony MZR-70) just stopped recording, the other (Sony MZR-500) just shuts off randomly, and the other had a battery explosion whilst charging. My remote stopped working in the MZR-70. Take in mind that I spent about 250 USD on each unit when they first came out. I was a fan of MD for a while before I got into PCs, but I started getting into live sets and having fixed time for MD of either 75 (ATRAC SP), 150 (ATRAC3 LP2), or 300 (ATRAC3 LP4) minutes per disc wasn't cutting it for me anymore. Plus, in LP4 mode, fast-forward and rewind within tracks went EXTREMELY slowly! Take into account all this was even before NetMD and since 2001, MD has improved dramaticly. It just doesn't have what I need now (economic storage and playback of native MP3s). That's why I left MD and went iRiver when I learned that they make the best MP3-CD players.

I still visit Minidisc.org and I see that MD is slowly improving I love the fact that you can finally record in Linear PCM (read: WAV!) and even reformat old regular MDs to hold double what they previously held. You can even record a little LPCM onto them. a 1-GB High MD can hold about 100 minutes of LPCM audio. Pretty nice for a small CD-sized live set or two. I heard that things are getting even better when Sony just allowed (please confirm this anyone?) upload of any recording to WAV format on the PC. Does this mean that I can record an LPCM live set straight from a mixer via optical line and transfer it directly to PC??? :-D I hope so! From what I've heard, as ATRAC is now in it's 5th or even 6th or 7th version, things probably got way better in that dept. too. The new Hi-MD units support this 'ATRAC3plus' format, which allows a bitrate between 40 & 256 kbps. I've always believed MD sounded better than MP3, even back in the plain ATRAC3 (LP2 & 4) days of 2001, when I used it for live sets, and I bet this ATRAC3plus blows MP3 out of the water now. Even if MD decided to play MP3s natively, I won't go back unless they hold about 4 GB+ per disc. I like the size and I LOVE the battery life (what? 100 h on a single AA now?), but economically, MD just doesn't do it for me when I got over 400 CDs here that have all MP3s on them.

Noob???? did you read my post, jackass??? In my post it said you need to install host program and drivers in order to use it as an HD. Take your iPod to another Windows computer and try using it as a hard drive. The first thing windows will tell you is that it does not recognize the filesystem (unless you install drivers and iTunes application). If you don't have those installed, Windows will not recognize the iPod as a drive and you would get a message: "would you like to format the drive?". You should go ahead and click "Yes"... and then tell me all about your lovely iShit ...

lamer... pfft...

Again: you don't need to install anything for iRiver. You could, if you want to - but you don't have to. I don't even know what they give you with a player, as I don't use it. I just plugged it in, my Xp sees it as a removable drive, I just drag my mp3's over (or folders full of MP3's) and I'm ready to go. I can then navigate the folders and listen to whatever track I want to. No additional software required other than standard XP.

I don't know where you're getting your info from mate....

cheers.

Using iTunes doesnt really make things THAT difficult.

Not worth arguing. He is right about just clicking the button to "use as external drive" and I am sure you are right too from the windows stand point.

BTW iPod is multiplatform friendly, Minidisk and iRiver are not. See what's going to sell the best.

They are. Check their site. Just cuz its not shown which OS the iriver is compatible with, doesnt mean OSX is immediately excluded.

thats pretty sweet, but i bet the battery life = 15 mins :-/ i love the concept though. i say give it a few years and it will be pretty main stream (hint hint stock investments as soon as apple realses somthing like it)

Posted by Bellie on Dec-07-2004 13:58:

hehe that would be quiet stupid dont you think if they designed a gadget like this with a battery with a life of 15 mins

You can listen 10 hours of music with it or watch for 5 hours movies

Here in holland the Gmini is almost selling better than the iPods since the launch of the Gmini. The Gmini has so much more to offer than the iPod and that for almost the same price.

Whats better than watching your favorite movie in the train when going to work!
Try that with the iPod

Watching your favorite game! (recorded or live)... I'm waiting for the era of trully on-demand portable devices - imagine having the following choices on your finger tips:

1. Watch your favorite show
2. Watch the game you missed or the one that's on
3. Watch a movie
4. Watch news real time
5. Listen to radio or satelite radio
6. Listen to MP3's
7. Play a game on demand - in a stand alone or team(while listening to MP3 or radio)
8. chat with your mates
9. Surf the web
10. Make a phone call

Well... while it may sound excessive, I'd say that you will see something very close in the next 3 years or so. With laptops getting smaller and more powerfull and wireless taking off, the next big thing will be the wireless wave.

When all major forms of wireless will consolidate, this will open up a whole new can of technology worms.

Looks like fun times are ahead.
