talib kweli, mos def, common... they are all super smoothe and are the epitome of good hiphop.

also really into Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc. lately. the vid kicks a well. am i the only one that think the melody part totally samples U2 - Staring At The Sun? good stuff.

I don't necessarily like hip-hop all the time either, but I can at least respect it as a musical genre. To each his own man.

Most of my favorites like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, the Roots, Common, Tribe Called Quest, X-Clan, Kool Keith, Arrested Development, Jurassic 5, Black Starr, Gang Starr, Afrika Bam, Immortal Technique, Jungle Brothers, J-Live, J-Zone, Deltron 3030, Dead Prez, The Coup, Spearhead and so on have already been mentioned, but how can you have an intelligent hip hop thread without mentioning Public Enemy or KRS-ONE & Boogie Down Productions? All of the Public Enemy albums (including Chuck D's solo disc and their recent stuff, believe it or not) are worth buying, the production work is amazing, not to mention the generally intelligent and thought provoking lyrics. The same goes for KRS-ONE, although the first BDP album is a little bit suspect with regards to the lyrical content.

I haven't seen anyone mention De La Soul either, they're mandatory listening if you're looking to get into intelligent, socially conscious old school stuff. I'd also recommend Paris. He can be a little bit over the top at times, but his albums are still very much worth getting. He's also handling production on the upcoming Public Enemy album, so it's definitely something to look forward to. I'd also recommend anything from Eric B. & Rakim - whilst I don't know if you could call it intelligent, the Rakim is probably the best MC ever in my view.

As for the people making snide comments about hip hop played on the radio, a majority of the artists discussed in this thread generally aren't given good radio play; they're often snubbed by radio and the industry in general; in essence, they don't chart. Anyhow, check out any of the artists mentioned; they're all worth listening to.

the problem is when it comes to stuff like this is, people r trying to hard to define music and other stuff when you cant. we cant define certain things because we live in a world which we introduced an artificial lanuage and (structure) which we made up which has little resemblence to the real world. the only lanuage that comes close is mathmatics!

for people who dont like hip hop, most of you like fatboy slim, not all but a lot, and he is a crossover arist with roots both in hip hop and house, many a time has he showcased hip hop artists, palookaville definetely has a hip hop vibe, no doubt.

there is a compromise.

Even though I am no longer a huge fan of Hip Hop or RnB, I do respect the good stuff produced by the genre.

Old school Dre and Snoop, Arrested Development, Warren G, excellent musicians imo, and I would take them over Castles Made of Shite ANY DAY!!!
