nah dave you prove time and again you have no idea how to exist in society and prove to be useful.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Apr-13-2005 11:02:

yeah, what dave said. plus, as far as im concerned, if you dont like the song youre playing, how can you expect others to? not playing vocal tracks could even be part of the style of a particular DJ. it takes all sorts.

and i dont think youre giving the punters enough credit P.

i was more offended that he/she's gonna stick to "simple" posts from now on. like theres something i didnt quite understand!

Posted by Dr P on Apr-13-2005 11:14:

Well maybe I don't give pnters much credit

but the average, for arguement sake 5am crowd, know what is going on but you go to any large party and people have no idea of what is going on in the music and all they want is to feel good, uplifted even.

I think most people on this board are not the average punter and some people get a scewed view of what makes good trance and a good dj set.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Apr-13-2005 11:22:

you could be right, but what makes the pros at the big events any less skewed?

and i really dont think you can synonymise "uplifted" with "vocals".

Posted by Dr P on Apr-13-2005 11:33:

well no I was talking in general about uplifted but people do want to sing along..

the pros at big events play what ever tune the crowd reacts to (if they are good enough) I have noticed vocal tracks get a good healthy response.

Trance is all about big vocals and big synths. Its that simple. The creativity makes it exciting to listen to. I have not heard anything in this country that is ground breaking recently and I think it is people who are producing (or trying to) are to far up themselves and stale.

youve spent too much time at 5am's and not listening to much else
how many vocals did Chris Lawrence drop last time?
or James Holden..
or most ints...cmon mang..we've had this one before...trance aint about pumping synths and big vocals..its about..well....TRANCE.

Posted by tachyon on Apr-13-2005 12:18:

.. trance is about emotion my good sir.

don't really need vocals to convey it.. its optional!

Posted by luke.sykes on Apr-13-2005 23:57:

My two cents.

Vocals are good untill they make them the focal point of the track, and then the music behind it suffers, the second you put the big powerfull "fake emotive", vocals in, the music has to be so piss weak to let them throu7gh the mix, so they're musically boring, the good tracks are the ones, which have the nice rythms with the vocals, hence the reason for g and d's success.

Posted by Aesthetic on Apr-14-2005 00:31:

...and this is why people call me jaded. do you guys blame me?

1 point for the effort. -1 for the delivery.

Well I still love vocal tracks and am very proud of the great vocal stuff that Keith writes! Unbelieve is a good example, and there will be many more to come! (He didn't enter his vocal stuff on the TT CD comp)

Posted by Nyquist_Theorem on Apr-14-2005 02:17:

good songs with vocals = good (remember james holdens last track? w00t w00t! )
good songs without vocals = good

bad songs with vocals = bad
bad songs without vocals = bad

i do agree with the sentiment that there are some DJs who are more interested in dropping the latest ch00nage than they are making the crowd go off.

look at adam white dropping rock your body. if strangelove or old man pana had dropped it during one of their sets, there'd be a thread posted up here called "POLL: BURN AT THE STAKE VS TARRED AND FEATHERED - WHICH SHOULD IT BE?"

...yet when adam white dropped it, the 60+ punters who'd been on their arse on the couches and sidelines waiting for something familiar nearly trampled each other to death to get to the dancefloor, which was completely packed out (before returning to its half-filled state once the familiar tunes petered out - sorry peter)

The reality is that the vast majority of punters don't follow along with tunes the way we do - they want a mix of familiar and new, and by familiar i mean tunes they've heard and remember. like it or lump it, a tune like 'jump the next train' or 'skydive' will stick in a punter's head much more readily than the white-labelled-acetate 12-copies-made promo-only dub version of Gunther Van Boogeren's new single Ich Bin Eine Jadedfuuketarde (due for release in mid-2007 in Luxembourg and Romania and 2009 in Bolivia on Juan Valdez Records) that you've got listed in your sig as 'top choon of the hour'. If you don't believe me, just watch the dancefloor go off the next time an international drops one of those vocal trance bombs that so many here consider to be a groaner.

hopefully this logic can also be used as my excuse for only owning 20 records, 17 of which are more than 3 years old...

Posted by Aesthetic on Apr-14-2005 02:20:

ahh.. so you like jump the next train.

ps. i was there while everyone was going off to rock your body rock. and it was sickening to say the least. if that song were a baby i would've dropped it at birth

isn't that the whole point of djing - to make the crowd go off?

for sure we should have a proper crap-on in person next outing we're both at - cuz i reckon you're a right fooker!

don't tell JPL tho - i told him he was the biggestt fooker on TA and you don't want him getting jealous...

pity the same thing didnt happen to your jaded ass.

seriously.. what is wrong with people having a ball to a slightly cheesy tune.. no-one is impressed with the people standing there crossing there arms.. they're the incapable socialites who miss out on the fun!~!

Posted by Aesthetic on Apr-14-2005 02:34:

only for 2 minutes though, because i'd rather hang around with my mates than sit there talking to some knob head off the internet who doesn't agree with me anyway

yeah, thats all well and fine. im assuming white loves that song tho he wouldnt own it and play it otherwise.

i really have fuck all respect for punters who have to hear what they heard last time, or must hear something they know to have a good time/dance. i reckon one of the greatest things about dance events is that youre never too sure what youre gonna get. hearing faves is always great, but hearing a future fave is better imo.

and dammit begic, are we having a bad week? youve been firing shots left right & centre all week!

speaking of simplicity, this right here sums my entire viewpoint on the matter to perfection.

and i also agree with luke.sykes post. and i love g&d.

and on another note, i hate the way 'cheese' is thrown around as a derogatory term all the friggin time in trance, seemingly to undermine tracks the majority of the crowd actually enjoys.
