Euro airlines OK in-flight cell phone use
GENEVA, Switzerland (AP) -- Two European airlines will allow passengers late next year to use their own cell phones on commercial flights within western Europe, a Geneva-based technology firm said Tuesday.
TAP Air Portugal and British carrier bmi both have agreed to introduce OnAir's voice and text service for cell phones in separate three-month trial runs, Chief Executive George Cooper said.
The planes -- which will be the first to allow passengers to make and receive calls with their own cell phones while onboard -- will give OnAir the chance to assess its service ahead of its general release slated for 2007, he said.
"With both airlines, initially there will be a couple of airplanes -- two or three airplanes -- equipped with this system," Cooper told The Associated Press from Germany. "During that three months, we'll all be evaluating how it's going, what the usage is, how we handle the crew issues and so on."
OnAir's system will be used by TAP on its Airbus 321 model and by bmi on its Airbus 320s, both single-aisle planes primarily used for flights within western Europe.
Users of mobile phones and other handheld wireless devices with roaming capability will be able to make and receive calls using a base station within the airplane. They will be allowed to turn their phones on after the plane reaches 10,000 feet, when other electronic devices such as portable music players and laptops are permitted, Cooper said.
Mobile phones are banned on existing aircraft for fear that they might interfere with a plane's navigation system as they attempt to log on to terrestrial networks.
OnAir's mobile communications system is based within the plane, which it says ensures that cell phones and other devices operate at lower transmission power and thus avoid affecting avionics. The company hopes to clear all regulatory hurdles for air traffic within Europe at some point next year.
OnAir -- a joint venture of Airbus and Netherlands-based technology company SITA Information Networking Computing -- is aiming to sell its services to other airlines, which could then use the technology in other plane models.
Cooper said the surcharge for mobile phone use will be competitive with international roaming rates, at about $2.30-$2.50 per minute. A text message should cost about 50 cents to send or receive.
Airline bmi, a subsidiary of British Midland PLC, flies primarily to destinations in Britain and western Europe and is London Heathrow Airport's second-largest flight operator.
TAP, Portugal's state-owned airline, flies to 43 destinations in 25 countries.
Cooper made the announcement in conjunction with the annual World Airline Entertainment Association Conference, which opened Tuesday in Hamburg, Germany.

I'm with Roger's now and have been for the last 5 years and I've never had a problem with them. I've had a couple minor mishaps, but I figure that'll happen with any phone company. I'm happy with my contract, and their policies...and have in fact been on the same contract the entire time. I like how they give you upgrades on yoru phone as well, and the guarantees on their phones are usually pretty good. |
Just another tid-bit about Roger's customer service...
So on my cell phone, it's been under my dad's name since I was about 18, b/c it was on his credit card. But for the past year or two it's been under my credit card, but his name. I wanted it to be under my name and we were under the impression that all I had to do was have him change it to my name on the account. Everytime we called someone gave us a different answer saying he had to call, or I had to call or we both had to. So last night I called about an ad I saw for long distance for students, and I figured that since my dad and I were both here, I'd inquire about changing my name.
So the guy helps me, and says he has to do a credit check just to make sure I'm good to go, even though it's on my credit card. Next thing I know he's telling me that the plan I was on expired in 2003, and they were just honouring it b/c I was already on it. Since it's under my name now I have to go on a new plan! The plan I had (150 daytime, unlimited weeknights/ends starting @ 7 and caller id) was $25 a month plus tax, and I've had that plan for like 3 years. It was perfect for me. If I wanted a plan like that...$50 bucks a month with tax! I was like WHAT THE HELL!! So I said, screw this, I want to go back under my father's name. This is ridiculus. I was told I couldn't do it b/c the contract was already terminated or something.
Finally I ended up getting to speak to a manager b/c this was just stupid. I was paying the bill and my name was on the account so I could change things under my dad's name. If I had known that this would have happened, I would have just stayed under my dad's name. So I spoke to a manager who was incredibly nice. She promised she would get me a deal that was either the same if not better. After some negotiations, she gave me a plan with 250 anytime, unlimited weekends/nights starting @ 6 and caller id for $25 a month plus tax. So she ended up giving me a better deal.
The other man that I spoke with was wrong in not telling me that I would have a major cost change if I switched to my name, but I know he wasn't trying to screw me over. The manager I talked to was very helpful and I was very satisfied with the deal.
So overall...cusomter service was great. A few little mishaps, but after everything got sorted out, I was once again a happy customer!

EV-DO!
Bell Canada Launches EV-DO Network
Toronto, ON & Montreal, QC, October 31, 2005
Bell Canada today unveiled Bell Mobility's new mobile data network, EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized), which it deems the fastest mobile data network ever commercialized. The technology is the third generation (3G) of wireless networks, and delivers data at download rates of up to 2.4Mbps, which Bell says is more than five times faster than anything else in Canada.
"The future of wireless is here today: EV-DO will fuel the next phase of wireless growth and provide Canadians with highly advanced next generation services not previously available," said Robert Odendaal, President of Bell Mobility and BDI. "With Bell's new network, we are changing the way Canadians use their wireless devices for work or play. Customers can only get this from Bell."
The fast data transmission speeds of EV-DO allow for streaming video, high-speed surfing, and 1MB file downloads in 20 seconds or less, with an average speed that varies between 400kbps - 700kbps.
"Bell's EV-DO network re-defines business on the go by connecting the handset with the power and capability of broadband," added Jim Jaques, Senior Vice President, Business Marketing & Sales, Bell Mobility. "The productivity gains from this new 3G network are significant. From file downloads to video-conferencing, the busy mobile executive now has constant real-time access to the people and information they need, no matter where they are."
Bell EV-DO will be available in Toronto and Montreal immediately, with plans to roll out across Canada beginning next year. Bell Mobility has concluded an agreement with its U.S. roaming partner to extend EV-DO coverage for Bell Mobility customers into the United States.
In tandem with today's announcement, Bell launched the first three EV-DO-compatible hardware devices: Kyocera Passport, a next-generation EV-DO PC card for wireless broadband on the go; BlackBerry 7130e; and the Samsung a920 handset.
Operating on Bells EV-DO network, Samsungs a920 is a portable multimedia device featuring a built-in MP3 player, megapixel camera, video recorder functionality, Bluetooth wireless technology, and built-in and expandable memory to store and share files like music, video, and photo.
"Samsung is thrilled to work with Bell to bring CDMA technology to the next level in Canada," enthused Jo Allan, Marketing Manager, Wireless Terminals Division, Samsung Electronics Canada. "The Samsung a920 phone, coupled with Bell's EV-DO service, will provide Bell Mobility consumers with incredible data transfer speed, further enhancing the multimedia services such as music, camera and video capabilities of the phone."
According to Bell, the EV-DO service paired with the a920 will allow users to instantly share digital photos and video clips via an always-on high-speed connection. Additionally, the a920's built-in and expandable memory will allow Bell Mobility customers to quickly download, store and listen to music using the phone's MP3 capabilities.
The BlackBerry 7130e business, EV-DO phone features a new candy bar handset design with raised keys, and it provides wireless access to complete phone, wireless e-mail and data features. Developed by Research In Motion (RIM), it offers average download speeds of 400 to 700 kbps, making it easy to download large attachments, view jpegs, browse Web pages and take advantage of other feature-rich data applications, says RIM. The SureType keyboard technology allows users to dial phone numbers and type messages without the limitations of traditional phone keypads. The device will also support wireless tethering on the 1xEV-DO network, providing broadband-like connectivity for laptop users.
Additional features include: large, high-resolution LCD screen with enhanced indoor and outdoor viewing; dedicated Send and End phone keys and an intuitive user interface; speakerphone; dual-band network support for nationwide roaming; 64 MB of flash memory; 8 MB SRAM for storage of data and applications; and Bluetooth support for hands-free voice communications.
"Mobile professionals on the go are really going to appreciate how the BlackBerry 7130e delivers more ways to stay in touch with work and home; not only with the unbeatable data speeds available in EV-DO coverage areas, but with the sleek new design that is compact, lightweight and very professional looking," said Christopher Shannon, General Manager, Hardware, Logistics and Supply, Bell Canada. "This next-generation BlackBerry device is sure to prove popular with Bell Mobility customers who demand the best in innovative communication technology."
The BlackBerry 7130e will be available to Bell Mobility customers before the end of 2005.
