Bleep 131: Leon Segka

Bleep 131
Aired: October 9th, 2008
Mixed by: Leon Segka (Greece)

It was 6 months ago when Leon and I first started talking about him doing a Bleep Show. It's been a long time coming, but then most of the shows are. They tend to be influenced by whatever came out during a given month and then recorded and sat on for months at a time.

This mix that was mentioned was what convinced me that Leon could deliver the goods. I was hoping for a similar set, but I never ask for a Bleep guest to cater to my whimsical ways. Once asked for a set a Bleep guest can do whatever his or her heart desires. So while Leon's set isn't what I'd hoped for, it is still quality music arranged and assembled in a quality fashion. Now that I've listened to it several times I do recommend giving it a whirl. it''s minimal, it's tech house it's techno the way it's supposed to be: varied, genre bending and influenced by more than just the latest top 10 on Beatport or what Richie is playing. Most importantly it has none of that progressive or trance-like stuff that seems to be more and more pervasive.

Next week's Bleep will be non-existent. I will be on vacation in London with my long time girlfriend / new wife. See ya'll in 2 weeks.

Bleep's goal is to bring quality dance-floor music, music without it's head up it's arse, to areas where it's seemingly lacking. Stale music has taken over and needs to move over. Variety is one component of Bleep, but only one of many. Look forward to hearing many forms of Electronic music with labeling of the sub-genres firmly ignored. We need less labels, not more. Techno is the label that Bleep assumes, but it's the Techno label of days gone by...with a sense of humour.

Everyone is highly encouraged to ask questions or comment about Bleep mixes. All questions will be answered. Help will be given. Direction will be shown.

I arrived home from my vacation thinking I would have to get my arse in gear right away and record a Bleep show. I was very grateful to find a request in my inbox from Sebastian over at klot.net asking if I would like to use his newest set on Bleep. Well it turns out Sebastian plays some pretty mean minimal bleep so of course I said yes!

Bleep 134: EDMX

Bleep 134
Aired: November 6th, 2008
Mixed by: EDMX (UK)

As opposed to the regular mix format of Bleep Radio, this week is a more standard 'radio' format. It comes to us all courtesy of Ed Upton who you know by some of the following names: edmx, dmx krew and, computor rockers (as a small sampling). I stumbled across Ed's first podcast and was so impressed with it I had to get in touch with him about possibly doing another one for Bleep.

We're all here now so you know what became of that email exchange.

It's informative, insightful and in my opinion it's something that is lacking for this area of music. I firmly believe that more people would be more appreciative and more supportive if there were more shows like this for them to listen to. Dj mixes are fantastic and we all love to download new ones to burn for in car entertainment (or where ever you prefer to listen), but when it comes to luring new blood into the scene it needs to be more accessible and we need to encourage new people to learn as much as they can about it at the same time. This is a great resource for this goal, especially with it's very broad and open minded approach. Of course Ed's great taste in music certainly helps!

Big thanks go to Ed, let him know if you like his podcast so he'll be willing to make more in the future. The music needs it.

Bleep 136: Dj Dro San

Bleep 136
Aired: November 20th, 2008
Mixed by: Dj Dro San (Portugal)

Drosan got the taste for mixing in the early 90s, when for the first time he entered a night club. First he began as a lightjockey and then worked his way out to djing. It's fair to remember that in those days "techno" music was kicking of in Lisbon. Club "Kremlin" made the difference where To Pereira %28a few years later known as dj Vibe%29 played that rithmatic, body movin music that so much inspired him. Also, he was lucky to have met Paulo "Escobar" one of the most respected djs back then to teach him.

More or less between 1991/94 Drosan played at matines like those classic "Zona+" afternoons, partys, clubs, a bit everywhere... 1995 was a bit underground... in 1996 he received a proposal to be the resident dj at club "Climacz". There he met his big mate dj Ze Mig l, another big influence and motive to evolve... Drosan started producing (1997) and continue djing, once again, underground. In between he likes to remember those freaky outdoor parties, those private friends parties and now and then a few club parties, this last ones were so few due to the bad times "techno" music was going thru. He also worked at dj Ze Mig l shop.
Along the way dj Mem became is big mate to and toghether they dj, produce music and founded in the year 2004 Nasty Colour records.

Dro San on Myspace | Nasty Colour Records
taken from: discogs

This set was recorded at what is lovingly referred to as the "Skoolyard Club" in Portugal. When someone works at a School and there is free space not being used, the only thing I can think to do with it is to convert that free space into a dance club at night once per month. It makes perfect sense. This jammin' little set was recorded at one of these nights back in October for Dj Urbe's birthday celebration.

Bleep 138: Trevor Wilkes

Bleep 138
Aired: December 4th, 2008
Mixed by: Trevor Wilkes (CA)

As far as stuff coming out right now goes, it seems to be mostly the more minimal and Acid side of things. I've got the itch to do some banging, but with most of the new stuff being merely thumpers I'm having a tough time playing and learning the new stuff and digging through the older stuff to find some corkers to let loose with. Granted, this week in the mail several top notch records have arrived from the rawer end of the spectrum, most notably the 'Epic Madness" ep by Axel Sohns and his crew of merry jackers. I will probably be giving that one a healthy work out real soon and I can't wait to get started.

Back in episode #136 by Dro San I mentioned a 'club' that had been fashioned out of an unused portion of a school. That is where this set was recorded as well. It was another of the monthly 'Skool-yard' parties as I believe they're called. This time around it was Urbe who was able to have a portion of his set recorded.

Bleep 141: Dave Shades

Bleep 141
Aired: December 25th, 2008
Mixed by: Dave Shades (Glasgow)

Dave found me via Fun in the Murky & Myspace and passed me two of his mixes to listen to. I only had to have one listen to know that he was going to be asked to do another one up for Bleep.

Dave Shades started DJing at the tender age of 16 spinning hip-hop and now and again dabbling in hardcore.
After hearing the odd tune here and there that grabbed his attention he was properly introduced to techno in 2001 and instantly fell in love.
He has held residencies at Concept Theory, Obese and Animal Farm, played several of the Footwork nights and played some of the Subcity Radio nights at the Arches.
Currently a resident and co-promoter of Mount Heart Attack, under the name Greggery Peccary %28one of many terrible alter egos used by Dave Shades that includes Inspector Radge-It among others%29, which will consist of 2 monthly nights in 2009 - Continuing at the Ivy and starting a new night in the Black Sparrow where the late licence will mean monthly guests.
Dave mainly plays wonky and jacking techno, with splatterings of booty, electro and acid, however he has been known to dabble in pretty much anything including disco, hip-hop and even breakcore.
In 2007 he was crowned the winner of the Dickride.com DJ Battle World Cup which was an online booty battle.
After a tied semi-final against Willie Heenan in which the deciding votes went 2-1 in Shades's favour, he took the final with the biggest win margin the competition has seen, beating DJ KNC from Belgium.

Aired: January 1st, 2009

Vadz [myspace] is back! This set was recorded live at a club in Moscow recently and the only sensible thing to do with it --of course-- was to Bleep it. It's been 45 weeks since Vadz last Bleeped. That being almost a year, clearly it's been too big a gap. I'll have to remedy that for '09.

Bleep 143: Luke's Anger

Bleep 143
Aired: January 8th, 2009
Mixed by: Luke's Anger (UK)

Luke passed me this recording of his a few weeks back. It's a recording of him playing live. The twist is that it's his first attempt at playing live off of the Machinedrum UW solely.

"quite happy with some parts of it, a few of the loops and transitions are a bit ropey but it's nice
to bang a box once in a while!"

Yes Luke, we all enjoy banging a box once in a while.

I hope you all enjoy this mix of Luke's as much as I did. It flows a lot differently than his stuff usually does due to the new way of putting it together for him. It's like hearing all your favorite Luke's Anger tracks remixed and recombined in a new way with some surprises along the way.

Also, to celebrate Luke's CD Release I'll be giving away a free copy to the first 3 people who send me an e-mail telling me two pieces of information...

1. What Luke's real name is. After all "Luke's Anger" is only his alias!
2. What was the first track Luke's Anger had pressed to vinyl?

Deadline is next Thursday's Bleep Radio show so get your answer in by then.

Bleep 145: Trevor Wilkes

Bleep 145
Aired: January 22nd, 2009
Mixed by: Trevor Wilkes (Hamilton, Ontario)

Similar to last week's Bleep, this one was partially due to the crate digging inspired by recent conversations with my like minded cohorts in crime Urbe and Dro San. However, it also contains a bunch of stuff that fits the 'vibe' of an upcoming gig. I was asked to go 'minimal and classy'. I don't know if I could ever truly fit into either of those two categories very well or for very long, but I trust that these guys know my taste and believe that they are describing it as they see it. Only time will tell!

Bleep 148: Dj Dro San

Bleep 148
Aired: February 12th, 2009 (Darwin Day!)
Mixed by: Dj Dro San (Portugal)

Today's Bleep Radio mix (148) is a monster. Courtesy of Dj Dro San of Portugal, one of the new additions to the Bleep residency roster. This 2+ hour mix of Techno should be all you'll need to hold you over until at least 2010. This set was actually recorded a short while ago at Dro San's Birthday party. It also marked one of the last, if not the last, occasions where the 'skool yard' club could be used. Perhaps that's why it seems as if he pulled out the big guns for this mix.

Bleep 149: Trevor Wilkes

Bleep 149
Aired: February 19th, 2009
Mixed by: Trevor Wilkes (Hamilton, Ontario)

Fortunately for Bleep Ive almost got my 'music area' back into shape. I've changed it's location here at Chez Murky and I think we all have an idea how painful and annoying it is to haul around a huge amount of vinyl and re-organize gear. The last 2-3 months have had me picking from a smaller stack than I'm used to, but now that most of it all is laid out before me once more. There'll be a bit more variety sneaking back into the shows as I continue to gain access again to it all.

Bleep 150
Aired: February 26th, 2009

As you may be able to tell with but a quick glance, this week's mix had an older theme to it. Like I mentioned last week. moving your vinyl around is wonderful for reminding you of things forgotten about or in some cases bringing to the surface things purchased and then lost before they could be properly given their chance.

Bleep 152: Trevor Wilkes

Bleep 152
Aired: March 12th, 2009
Mixed by: Trevor Wilkes (Hamilton, Ontario)

I was going to record something a little more bang bang than what you see here for Bleep this week. However, since there is going to be no Bleep next week (I'll be on the sunny beaches of St. Paul Minnesota ;) ) I figured I'd record something a little more varied and wandering in style.

I don't know how I feel about parts of it, but it works for the most part. I would never attempt to re-record a mix as that would require me to have 2 things: the patience to do so, and the time needed. So with no real forethought, as usual, here you go...

See you on March 26th for Bleep 153. It should be a guest mix unless everything goes to pot while I'm away.

Urbe, one of the current Bleep Radio residents is back with another mix. Not one to mess around; Urbe has kept 'er at full mast throughout. Dirty and sluggish bass, riffin on oldschool stabs and whatever it would be that describe the Society Suckers. This has it.
