I can't explain why his fans don't listen to other DJs but i'd assume it relates strongly to point A. Following a DJ isnt about listening to music anymore, its comparable to supporting your team. Even if they suck they're YOUR team. 2003 seems a particularly bad year and also a crossroads in my opinion... Tiesto -> played Traffic everywhere PvD -> was playing Nothing But You multiple times a night Ferry -> played Punk everywhere - and continued to make those "artist only sets" for the festivals Armin -> embraced mcprog - completely losing the quality on ASOT (both radio & label!) The big difference with that comparison is that at least 2 of the other 3 DJs here have moved on. While the 4th is playing catch up on Tijs (just like throughout his career). Unfortunately Tijs and Armin are still under the impression that trying to appeal to the masses via artist albums and lavish gig production is the way forwards. |
I don't know what kind of trance you guys like... but Tisto's tracklisting is way more interesting than Armin's Or PvD's...
And for this matter i'm only comparing the 'top jocks'
Personally I love to listen to sets of lesser known dj's, so i'm far from a tisto worshipper. I dont know why MichaelBoogerd! says his fans don't listen to many other dj's.
Another problem is that many of the americans here tend to know everything about trance, while they just don't.
You guys don't have weekly or monthly trance parties there in your neighbourhood; I'm constatly going to them... trance energy; mysteryland, illusion nights, dj's from goskitchen comin' here... It's all around me in 3h driving.
My live experience with trance is probably way ahead of the one of the average american trance listener, so stop listening to sets like a pathetic fool and then judging them by some technical aspects that are only disturbing when you focus on it... go sniff something of the live atmosphere first.
There's stuff enough to critisize topjocks; but instead of doing so you should respect all of them and all what they've done for trance. Bashing is just stupid; all those guys answering in a thread like "Pvd rules, end of story / tisto sucks, that's all" should get an instant ban IMO. They make discussions impossible.
I'm really glad this thread is taken a bit more serious than the average one.
Just my two cents

I reckon he does get too much of a hard time here. No doubt the same will happen to PVD just because he's labelled as #1

when i was in LA for my holidays in september last year i escorted my sister to the tiesto on concert, this was the second time id seen him play, this was a production based on a combination of his second concert & search of sunrise 4, fair enough, the sound quality was second to none, the lighting and FX were top notch, but the real killa tunes of that time last year just wernt there and that ruined it for me. didnt even notice much mixing at all, he was just cueing cds. another thing i noticed is that the size of it all seemed bigger in the dvds than in the US (prob cause they couldent move all the gear needed to keep it the original size, + it was only a 4hr show)
i realise its a concert about him, & dont get me wrong i loved some of those in there time (waterfall, moments etc..) but he pretty much played the cd as it is, + a few old classics. the encore was perfectly production line rehearsed, the moment it finished he disapeared & didnt meet & greet as far as i know.
left me with the confirmation that he is no longer a scene leading dj, and that his contribution to trance has gone in the wrong direction.
seems like he realises the tall poppy syndrome cutting him away, did what he could before it was too late & now he just drains cash out of uneducated dance music enthusiast noobs.
when i compare what i heard jan 2004 to sept 2005, it became plain as day to me that he had been bitten by the comercialism bug.
sad. once upon a time he was my fav dj. now i feel embarrased to admit to that.
i pray that armin isnt falling into the same trap.
im kinda glad that this has happened, cause 1. people need to realise that his is not a higher immortal power, hes just a regular guy like you and me [/star struck], and 2. now other well known djs can learn from his mistakes, and this makes trance better for the future.
Im suprised this thread got this far.....................

+ another 1, and I hope this thread gets further.
Chris you amaze me.
Props to Clovis too
I have a newfound respect!
As I said in another thread, I've quit ivibes.nu and just now I'm gaining the passion that I used to have for music. I'm rediscovering some of my CDs and how the deejays put the tracks together. Its great and I think all deejays and people need this. We all have times where we don't care and when we do. I love it personally.

the music culture where i live must be a bit different then.
round here respect goes to local gabber, hardcore & freeform djs that only use vinyl, rave scene, etc..
anyhow thats beginning to get irrelevant, back on topic.
this thread has gone to the toilet....

I think alot of times people fail to distinguish the difference between the 2 type of DJs that are out there. I am talking about the DJ as an artist and the DJ as an entertainer. I dont think anyone here will argue that Tiesto, Oaky, Armin are great DJs as entertainers. Thats why they attract such large audiences. They are up there to entertain people. As artists, these guys have lost it. They obviously at one point were a big influence on the artistic side of EDM, but I guess since the new millinium we are seeing the emergence as DJs as entertainers and these guys are at the forefront. Nobody will argue the artistic talent of guys like Oliver Leib,James Holden, etc.....but have you ever seen any of these "artistic" DJs in front of a crowd? Its like watching someone read a term paper in front of their high school class in the underwear. They look uncomfortable. In a perfect world DJs as entertainers would be comprised of the most talented people in the scene, but it doesnt work that way. DJs as entertainers are mostly "type A" personalities, and the artistic DJs are usually the quiet ones. Respect to "Tiesto" as being a good entertainer, however I will never mistake him for an artistic mind.
