well i dunbn i get on well with him i think hes a nice guy. maybe a bit more constructive would help. i want you guys to succeed i really do. but i dont really know if i can help. maybe its the venue or the crowd or the promotions or i dunno, but i feel sometimes there is something lacking. i dont know how you could fix it though....i only say this because after going to a few interview nights and seeing some of the same djs it just seems to be a more fun night in a way, better atmosphere, everyone is going off. when i go to obsession its different, it seems like you are taking it too seriously in a way, i mean its like you are trying to become the next super club kinda brand thing, maybe people aren't as interested in that or maybe not that interested in the style of event you have? i dunno how to explain it much sorry!

On behalf of Ben and I both thanks for the kind words re interview, philby - it's exactly that 'vibe' that we've always been after with all our interview-branded events be it at Tilt, a warehouse, a recovery or anywhere else. It's something no amount of lasers, smoke machines and podiums can replace and IMO it's what makes a party fun.

I think it's important to remember, though, that (at least the way I understood it) Obsession was meant as a 'big room' party modelled after the UK superclubs, so in fairness its vibe will come with the full room that increased popularity will bring. When Room is properly filled (ie Satoshi), the vibe is fantastic. If you find the vibe at Obsession flat, could it just be from the numbers in comparison to what you're used to for a big night at Room?

It's up to all of us as trance fans to support nights like Obsession so that we can build the numbers, so that future Obsessions have that Satoshi-like vibe too. As Scott said, no point complaining about there not being good nights if you're not actively building (or at least trying to) the nights that are already running.

with quite a bit of time to promote this one..and some good crews helping out..and a decor extravaganza...and with a recent burst of international trance jocks down here (but none in the next few weeks)...and a wicked wicked flyer - i reckon this obsession might just be a night to remember

and yer philbz as nyquist put it eloquently and ill put it my way lol...ya cant compare interview and obsession really imo - interview is the trancier equivilent of 161, its great fun, its intimate, and as a dj i can get smashed - where obsession is like a local MoS/gatecrasher/cream sorta thingo which we really do need so when the inters come down they have a top notch quality, big club night to play at (cos it doesnt look like whacking every trance crew in melb together works very well from recent events lol)

...or something :/

Philby i dont want to repeat what jules and Matt have correctly said but i'll just add a couple of points.

When we started Obsession we did so because the numbers at the smaller nights were becoming less and less and knew we had to try something different.

The problem we have atm is that venues in melbourne simply dont want trance. You can write the word house on the pavement out the front and you have a full club where as if you say trance they think junkies in fat pants.

Room is a REALLY big venue and as such is extremely hard to fill. We put 500 ppl in the place and it still doesnt have that "packed to the rafters" feel that makes interview such a great night. But sadly there isnt a venue in between that will also support a bigger capacity as we grow (which we hope to do).

We need variety in the nights running and all doing well if the scene is to continue here.

That comes from a good product, hard work and persistence however, not luck.

I have some suggestions.

1. Naked Batemans
2. Bring back the homeless guy in the front room *looks at Queen Vee*
3. Let Steve Strangis arrive on a motorbike like Tom Cruise in Top Gun with "Highway to the dangerzone" playing
4. Next Obsession should feature an array of native animals Obsession - Flora and Fauna

I like this theme and flyer the best out of all the events

The only negative aspect I feel about Obsession is the pressure you guys seem to be under before the event date. It makes it a little nerve racking to watch (Will they make numbers etc).

We put alot into the production of the night to make it stand out as something different but this means big budgets to break even, I'd love for this to not be the case but i think we just need good turnouts regularly.

Posted by sezzy on Apr-09-2006 23:55:

lol you can't really compare the two nights. big difference between filling a club that hold 120 people, and filling one that holds 1200, even up to 1500 people.

Embracing the goddess energy within yourselves..
will bring all of you to a new understanding and value of life.
A vision that inspires you to live and love on planet earth.
Like a priceless jewel..
buried in dark layers of soil and stone.
Earth radiates her brilliant beauty..
into the caverns of space and time.
Perhaps your are aware of those who watch over your home.
And experience it as a place to visit and play with reality.
You are becoming aware of yourself as a game master.
Imagine earth restored to her regal beauty.
Stately trees seem to brush the deep blue sky.
Clouds billow to form majestic peaks.
The songs of birds fill the air..
creating symphony upon symphony..
The goddess is calling for..
and honoring..
of what she allows to be created..
from the core-mystery of the blood.
Those who own her planet are learning about love.

no, i mean gamemaster. was about 2 and half years back though. don't think you were around then??

Posted by PauLie_C on Apr-10-2006 02:50:

keep doing what ur doing boys, it will come, it may just take time, because remember we are in melbourne, in all honesty though, i have never ever been to a trance night like obsession in melb, the quality of dj's the decor, the sound/light all that effort that goes into the event to give it that main room/big room feel, i will never ever forget when steve played bounce back at the first obsession, the crowds reaction, it was absolutely breathtaking, and at the last obsession when scotty played purple haze - rush, slowly slowly good things come to those who wait, these 2 boiz along with room have put so much time and effort into these events, alot of us in melb could definiotely take a leaf out of these 2 guys book

Posted by 00soups00 on Apr-10-2006 03:04:

Scott and Steve are both involved in the creation of something that all of us do want. A big club night to call our own. Something we can all feel proud in being apart of whether it be - Promoting, DJing, Organising or simply Gurnering.

These guys are putting their own blood, sweat and tears (strangis) into this. To be honest its something that most of us haven't got the balls to sacrifice so much of ourselves for, because we either don't have the passion to see this type of night work, or we don't have the drive to make it work, or the pre-existing reputation to make it happen.

Never the less, these guys have certainly sacrificed a truckload of themselves to even get this night to where it is currently, so i think that criticism of it, should definately be left to the 'constructive' type.

Trance may not be your cup of tea, but certainly everyone on here wants to have a big, successful club night to call our own, and that is why everyone, whether you're a prog-head dj, a clever promoter, or an opinionated punter should get behind these two in whatever capacity you can; even if it means keeping your non constructive criticisms to yourself.

note - to those who are saying well soups is just jumping on the bandwagon because he has got mainroom. that is not true. i've always been a supporter of this night, i certainly have had some opinions on things that could be tweaked to improve it, but i voiced those to scott and not just whinged and/or complained on a messageboard.
