congratulations france, portugal wasn't convincing at all even if they dominated the 2nd half.

france was so boring today, boring boring boring ugly football, thank god the italians will save the day in the final by playing beautiful offensive football.

univision was saying something about what Ronaldo said in a recent interview where he said, "THE WORLD CUP should Not be for OLD PEOPLE"
it should only be for the young players....

Trust me, we aren't the only ones who were/are disgusted of his behaviour during Rooney's sending off.

I suspected that it wasnt only English fans who detest him now. Regardless of Rooney's temper tantrum, Ronaldo did his reputation a severe blow (how much worse can it get?) by sticking his nose into that whole affair on Saturday. that kind of crap, as well as his constant moaning to the refs and blatant diving, is enough to piss fans of the game off regardless of their nationality.

Anyway, it was a pretty shite game to be honest. I almost fell asleep in the first 30 minutes. Henry was fouled, no doubt about it there. After all their team has gotten away with this WC, Portuguese fans have no right to bitch about that penalty call!

I still can't believe Figo missed that header after Barthez made a tool of himself. But perhaps it's bad karma...he cursed his forehead with that unpunished headbutt against Holland eh?

So it's over now for us.

This was yet again a very shit match. France scored then played exclusively defensive from then on, Portugal wasn't particularly inspired. Not taking away the merit from the french, they did win the game, but i honestly think neither side really deserved to be on the final if we only consider this semi-final. Dull, like 90% of the cup.

We exagerated far, far too much with diving today. This gives us a bad name, and isn't good for football overall. The manager and players are all complaining about the ref but i don't think they're right - i think Larrionda did a good game. This is the bad side of our team, and can only apologise for it.

In the good side we have the excellent determination of some of our players - Ricardo Carvalho against England and Holland was the biggest example of it. Therefore it's very unfortunate for him that he's connected to the loss - even more considering it looks like he didn't intended to take Henry down. A penalty was correctly given, but it wasn't his intention.

The team overall was passive, slow and tired. Figo did everything he could but the age limits him. Also unfortunate that he missed a clear goal, on what would have been the biggest mistake in the career of Fabien Barthez. Ronaldo was one of the biggest divers and whiners, yet dealed perfectly with the pressure by making one hell of a game - dribbling past 2, 3 players several times when without support.

Now I have to support Italy. Not as a payback for this game, but because I think they deserve the cup more than the french, and always liked them a little bit more. And by the way, we're winning that glorified friendly against the hosts Saturday.

I often wonder about the worth of the third place game. The World Cup isn't the Olympics...either you win the trophy or you don't. As a player, it would be hard for me to get up for a third place match only days after you failed to get into the Final. The Euro stopped doing the 3rd place games awhile ago I think.

The Euros stopped doing it in the 70s or 80s.

I actually always liked the 3rd place match. It gives a little bit of an extra importance to reaching the semis, and is a consolation prize for a smaller team that loses in the semis (Sweden 94, Croatia 98, Turkey 02, Portugal 06?). Besides since teams are both knocked out and don't have much to risk, sometimes we get a good game.

Keep it.

+1 Keep it.

The more wc football the better. It's bad enough that after Sunday we are going to have to wait another 4 years. Depressing

I wouldn't scrap it. No point in messing with tradition. But if I was a player, I wouldn't really care if I finished 3rd or 4th because I didn't finish 1st and that's what matters. I was only a kid in 1990, but England lost to Italy in the 3rd place game. I didn't really care because the real heartbreak was not getting into the Final. you're right though...sometimes the 3rd place game is better than the final, 1990 being a good example.

There should be play-offs for all those in the quarter finals also.

So there would be:
A final
3rd place match
Play-offs for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th places.

any real reason of why to stop with quarterfinals instead of going all the way upto 32nd place? besides to award these places one single match for each team wouldn't do it.

making a single 3rd place match is the most logical option.

I unfortunately didn't get to watch the game.. but..

and ok, I am officially done with my happiness of Portugal being gone now

I can't remember what site it was...but I was looking at England's history in the WC and it had them listed as 6th in 86, 8th in 2002. Both were QF defeats....how can 5,6,7,8th places even be determined?
