Wrong, again. I just find it mildly irritating how you can slate (or praise) an album that you haven't even heard.

I am basing this on his productions over the last 5 years. And if there was any evidence that the comming album would be something special I would love to mention it. But PvD's recent releases (remixes included) have been horrible. But you are welcome to proove me wrong.

jag tycker du kan bra engelska faktist... jag suger p svensk grammatik o snt.

I just think, PVD needs to take a break. i.e. stop spendin so much time at the clubs, and more in the studio.

MY take on it

Okay, just thought I would share my take on this opinion/expectations on PvD's work and the upcoming album due in ~Aug-October this year:

I was first exposed to the PVD sound in 1999 and 2000, right around when "Out there and Back" was released. I had never heard anything like this before - this album totally blew me away, and it's still a timeless work of the art of sound...I will always consider the Seven Ways/Out there and Back albums to encompass the trademark "PVD sound" we all know.

I was really impressed by Politics of Dancing 1, which came out in the middle of 2001. I think that, although this was a mix album with tracks from many artists, Paul did a great job of finetuning, adjusting, and re-editing the tracks to give the whole mix that trademark "PVD sound". It was a banging mix album, very smooth, elegant and fluid. In all reality, I think this is the last artist release (of any kind) that really had the quality and ingenuity of sound that I expected from PVD.

Yes, the Global release was *very* good too, but again, this was basically just a mix set of PVD's all-time best hits, but it turned out to be a great-sounding release. The DVD was definately cool too. The release was really not "new material" or an artist album.

Reflections, for me, basically seemed to be like an "experimental test." PVD was really going out on a limb and trying to see how a more poppy type sound would rest with a listener audience. Many tracks on the album seemed more pop music (with electronic elements), than true dance music. It wasn't really an all-out banging dance album, at all. I think PVD just wanted to try some new project collaborations, to take a different route with his music and see how it went.

TPOD2 was somwhat of a disappointment with me. I was expecting it to live up to TPOD1 standards, with the trademark fluid, seamless mixing and subtle, silky nuances of change making for a solid progressive electronic aural assault bliss, but it really just seemed like PVD took a bunch of popular top 40 dance records (that were hot like 9 months earlier from when the mix was released) and made a mix over a weekend, and didn't add any of the PVD flavor or re-editing I would expect. When the mix album FINALLY came out, all the tracks were basically old hat, and you could tell that they could have been mixed by any DJ that knew that they were doing. It did not have a PVD flavor or trademark sound, at all. However, it was a banging dancefloor-style release that embodied some of the elements that PVD was using in his livesets at the time, and the album was a good listen, but got old, quickly.

So, basically, I think that Paul's last 2 releases, Reflections and Politics of Dancing vol.2 have been somewhat of a disappointment. This doesn't mean that his musical abilities are waning, at all. I've seen him perform live 6 times since 2001, and he hasn't disappointed me once. His artist releases are really different than the way he delivers his music on the dancefloor. He does a great job of building up energy when he plays live, and he can keep the energy going throughout his set. I really do wish there was someway that Paul could translate some of the same elements or style from his live sets towards his CD album releases...but all in all, I think Paul has his own agenda, and he wants to keep the 2 separate. It's almost like he is establishing a different identity as a club DJ/performer, and as an electronic music artist. Yeah, I would really like to see something like "Out there and Back" again, it's kind of what I have been waiting on - I have to wholeheartedly agree with everyone on that. I was hoping he would make a great set of 12-15 of his own handcrafted progressive tracks, and make a mix album that showcased the new evolution of his sound, using ableton live, serrato, etc and other modern digital tools to really showcase the creative talent that he has been employing on his live shows. For now, we will just have to wait...for a few months at least, till we know more.

No it's not. Anyone can make a track that keep people dancing. In fact, it's not even hard. It's just that stuff like that just doesn't work in an artist album environment (or home listening in general).

So, I am guessing that most of the album (Release date, and tracks included in the release) is still, for the most part, a mystery. I think that Stormy Skies might be on there, and I have seen some of the photoshoot flyers that might be part of the "In Between" album cover art, but other than that I know ZERO about the new album - other than, it is SUPPOSED to be out later this year.

Can anybody shed anymore light on it?

Posted by trancelove69 on Apr-30-2007 12:04:

I have the feeling the release is kinda getting pushed back.

The plan was to release the album in August. That should mean the first single should be in his playlists by now already. Also events in June are branded as "In Between Release Tour" so by June we should be hearing most of the album already, again a reason why the first single should be out any day now. Dont see any preorder info on Amazon though. I guess theyre late.

^ Well that gives us an idea when the album will (or might) come out.

So........we have a date... (????)

This is REALLY sooner that I thought - I was hoping it would be out by October, but this says "August 14" - that's only like 4 months away.

It's wild, we still know basically NOTHING about the tracks that are going to be on the album, Paul has done a good job of keeping these under wraps. There is rumor that Stormy Skies might be one of the tracks, but there are still a few questions:

1. Is this going to be a "mixed" DJ artist album, or are all of the tracks going to be separate 'songs' - like on Reflections.

2. Will Paul make a 2-CD release album, with the "tracks album" on 1 CD, and a DJ mix of re-mixed tracks on the second CD, like he did with "Re-Reflections"

3. Will this include a 5.1 Dolby CD?

4. Is this going to be a mainfloor dance album, or a chill/laidback album?

5. When is the official announcement going to be made on paulvandyk.com? When will the album be listed on amazon.com and other CD store sites?

Those are just a few questions that still remain to be answered. At least we have a vague idea when the album MIGHT be out now...

Posted by stan229 on May-03-2007 23:15:

1) Artist Album
2) Supposedly has 24 songs already done and he's handpicking each into 1 CD
3) *shrug*
4) Both? He said its gonna range from mellow vocal songs to "eddie halliwell style" hard stuff
5) I'm expecting June because thats when the "In Between" album tour starts

check this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORNEaS_so8c

This seems to be a new PVD track, it was played at Coachella this past weekend. There are a couple other ones I saw in the videos from the 1015 show in San Francisco that seem like new tracks as well. It could be possible that Paul is starting to can tracks from his new album in his livesets, but this must have just started, because there was no hint of this from his sets at Ultra and Space at WMC a few weeks ago.

tbh... not really

The PvD I love used to churn out really creative & progressive trance tunes.

The track at the video, while not being too bad, sounds like everything else at the moment

But hey.. who am I to say... I havent been following the 137-144bpm scene for ages. I just happened to browse this thread for old times sake

Check this one too.

OK, I found another track that seems to be the lead-in for the one I posted, you can tell when you see it, it's like he's mixing something with "Nothing but you" - listen for the angelic voice - and then he flows into the next track

check this:

That is the like the mix-in/intro for the other video I posted.

Damnit, I KNEW IT!!! I knew I had heard this tune a loooongg time before, and I pulled my old Anabolic Frolic CDs, and there is was - the first track of Happy2BHardcore chapter 3 - "Distant Skies" by the Uniques.

This seems to be a mainfloor hard dance remix of the classic happy hardcore tune. I've ripped a small portion for you to check out and give a listen, there are definately similarities, the main tune is basically the same notes:

http://homepage.mac.com/wardc/distantskies.mp3

check it out.
