| Originally posted by Sand Leaper For fuck's sake, stop using "minimal" like it is a new genre that popped up when people started bumming Richie Hawtin and his new haircut. "Minimal" is a prefix, an approach to creating music where you aspire to achieve maximum impact from a minimum of elements. Therefore, any type of music whatsoever can be minimal. "Minimal" is not an all-purpose denominator to be used for lumping in every techno or tech house tune that tries to mimic what Richie Hawtin is putting in his sets and signing to his label these days. Techno as a genre has been moving towards a more minimal approach in recent years, (as can be seen in the sets of people like Adam Beyer or Marco Carola), but people like Robert Hood and Mike Ink have been pioneering this approach to techno for more than 10 years, way before the cocaine massive started inhabiting techno nights, and way before DJs and producers started to water sets and productions down to a mindnumbingly boring heap of grey matter to accomodate them and their favouring of poseur habits at the bar instead of dancing. And finally, if you're gonna resort to pompous rhetoric like "true minimal" (techno, obviously), at least name check some releases that actually broke some ground, like this one, this one or this one. |
Minimal only now has gotten recognition as a popular genre, I already said why; Richie Hawtin. Now everything with a repetative, constant beat that lacks a climax and emotional melody like trance or house or whatever is classified as minimal.
What the basis of minimal now is in the community and market is really like a sub-genre of house and techno. Like on beatport when you click "House" then you look under sub-categories you have tribal, disco, acid ect. ect. "Mainstream" minimal is all just a sub-genre of techno and house. It's like the 2 grand daddies of everything now; techno and house.
Most real minimal is either under chill-out or electronica at music stores. Take Ezekiel Honig for example or Morgan Packard or Mark Templeton.
Same shit goes with electro, but luckily they've named it electro-house so it isn't that embarrassing towards electro and hip-hop.
Genre's are bullshit anyway, it's all music, it's all 0's and 1's and just sound.

To me, that's what minimal sounds like, it's the lack of elements and the simplicity. But to me, going out to a club or some festival and hearing a set full of that for what two hours with maybe some electro-house shit, is boooring as hell. People go out to have fun, enjoy themselves, and unless your in some lounge where really arty people go to who like things like modern art and poetry (I do) and just sit around and drink mixed drinks, then I don't see how minimal as a genre can really "rock a dance floor", as in make people jump up and have fun and dance. It's almost like dancing to ambient music....the music should reflect the experience, just as the experience should reflect the music. Not saying minimal totally sucks, but I just don't feel it's a genre that works on a dancefloor like trance, techno, house and breaks. PS. This is just my opinion that it doesn't to me. Maybe it does, as I don't go to clubs in Germany or anywhere else. But from the stand point of enjoyable club music, I don't think minimal is. |

Popularity is like sine wave. We went from Trance to Progressive to Electro and now probably to Minimal. So does that mean it will work it's way up now?
It's like a cycle. Once we all get too old then a new generation will start their own cycle.

| Originally posted by wotyzoid simplicity is no reason to bash music, i somewhat agree with you on ur statement, i, however, like all types of edm (except happy hardcore, hardstyle or euro or any other garbage alike) from main dance to dum and bass i like everything, i have no problem with minimal whatsoever and even enjoy it to extremes once in a while BUT to me at least, minimal will never be as deep or revigorating as a good trance or house tune. But you fail when you stated that minimal is way too simplistic to be good (soory if i missunderstood your point) because i see music that is way too complicated to be a lack of creativity. A simple and sweet track beats any complicated, alphabetisised mess of a tune any day. A good producer always knows that. |

UMMMMM...the future of music is a mistery, it might seem close minded but i think only the concept of music will evold, every genre of music in my opinion has already been created it will only get better imo.
I'll be the next person to create the biggest genre of music the world has ever known.

I don't care if you call or mislabel it minimal or techhouse or anything else. At the moment people like Sven Vath, Extrawelt, James Holden, Loco Dice, Raresh, Richie Hawtin are doing it for me. Had some great parties last few months with these dj's. Crazy crowds, nice music and every roof was blown away.
