I wouldn't be surprised if there's no significant differences in the end between physical and otherwise

It's so nice to be able to blame these sorts of things for behaviour, isn't it?
ADD is a rare disorder that is one of the most disgustingly over-diagnosed phenomenons in a long time. Teacher wants a class full of calm, obedient children who don't cause her to smoke from stress; so teacher goes ahead and recommends to parents that they take their child to a psychiatrist because the child doesn't want to pay attention while teacher drones on from her prescribed 50 year-old textbooks;so they medicate the majority of the class with meth so that nobody asks questions or thinks or explores for themselves
You're definitely right about their parents not really giving a shit though. It's a sad state of affairs and chemical dependency is becoming more and more an intrinsic part of the generations. And you know who wins? Pharmaceutical Corporations.

haha, let it be known that I love black moms. White parents and kids, they walk into a store, their kid rips the place apart, mom says "no. don't do that" and they leave after the kid has ripped everything apart for a few more minutes and mom is bored with the store anyways. Black parents and their kids...kid touches one thing and mom just has to look at them with that one eye...that deep look...that look that KNOWS what they've done...the look that they've seen before and were soundly beaten for whatever they did.
Kids should be disciplined. They don't know any better. They aren't just going to pick it up as they go along and sometimes you simply cannot just sit them down and have a nice talk about the bad things that they've done. It was determined a good 50 years ago through mountains of psychological studies that children are far different than adults and reason far differently, so don't treat them as though they are just "little grown-ups". They can certainly act the part at times (through imitating you or others) but they have not yet reached the point where they reason as adults do and it is a parent's job to teach them how to socialize and how to act accordingly.
As far as physical discipline being abuse - yeah, sometimes it is. But sometimes it isn't. I understand a bit where Frenchie's coming from - that I wouldn't want to beat my child and that they should understand that I love them and that they should not fear me, but I also know it is important to make your children understand what's wrong and what isn't and to fear the actual consequences of a wrong act, not the hand that disciplines them. Hitting them out of anger is not the most prudent way of reinforcing behaviour but just because you are physically disciplining them doesn't mean you have to be angry about it. I know my dad never hurt me when I was spanked - it was merely the shame I felt in being spanked that changed my behaviour, not the actual physical aspect, even if I was being physically disciplined.

I definitely agree with this. But in that same light, do you really want to leave your children with emotional scars? I would hope not.

Nooo, no I don't. I don't think YELLING at your kids is any better than SPANKING then. I don't know when talking nicely went out of style and when kids starting acting like hooligans.

I think you've got that backwards...only talking nicely has gone into style and "hooligans" have arisen as a consequence of a lack of discipline. That's not necessarily from just a lack of physical punishment though, but a lack of discipline all together from apathetic parents.
I'm not saying that this is always the case, but I have seen it in some... It's very easy for parents to not have to discipline their kids the way they should by just stating that they are practicing "modern" parenting which means no verbal or physical confrontations with their kids. It's much easier (and much more lazy) to put in a half-assed effort of "time outs" and "talks" than it is to actually teach a kid right and wrong and that there are consequences for bad behavior. I think for many parents, getting on a soap box and preaching the merits of a punishment-free environment is a way of justifying sheer laziness. They can make themselves feel better about it by convincing themselves that they're raising children free of some non-existent physical or psychological trauma, but in reality they're raising kids that are uncontrollable and unable to interact appropriately with other people and other surroundings.

Between 13 and 17 I was sort of 'nanny' to two younger cousins when I was living with my aunt. She used to try the speaking thing to them and they where literally rolling right off the rails and getting away with virtually everything.
And she put up with it.
"Robbie don't do that, Michael stop hitting your brother, Robbie stop hitting your brother, Michael don't do that"
Blah Blah Blah over and over, which they ignored unless my uncle was around.
I didn't put up with it, I thought they where an embarrassment to the family every time we'd go out and these little bastards would be ripping stuff up, screaming, fighting and carrying on. So I beat the absolute crap out of them with a rolled up copy of Cleo, it was a nice thick, weighty tome of high gloss paper, fashion tips and pain.
Only had to whack them with it a couple of time over a few years and they stopped being idiots, after that it only took a look, maybe a scowl and they wouldn't dare do anything stupid.

I dunno, my cousins hold down jobs, didn't end up in jail and relatively socially responsible people. 10 years later they take every opportunity to get back at me, fortunately old age and cunning wins over the clumsy, youthful aspirations of revenge.

I can think of very few people whom I would consider "qualified" for the job by any sort of psychobabble standards.
Truth is, most people simply shouldn't have kids - they're not cut out for it - my parents certainly weren't - but they learned to deal with it and grew up pretty fast.
The good thing is: no matter how fucked up and unqualified your parents are/were, you're not doomed to turn out bad. Not to say that children don't inherit certain behavioural patterns from their parents, but just because you have sucky parents doesn't dictate you will be a sucky person. I'm sure some people here can vouch for that (they don't have to say so if they don't want to).
Likewise though, most parents would do well to realize that how they raise their kids is both a blessing and a curse. If they fuck it up and don't care about it, they get to deal with it for the rest of their lives (unless they skip out early, then they're mostly just cvnts), but the reward is if you do a good job loving your children and providing for them and raising them to be the best people they can be, you get to have someone around to change your bedpan when you're old and gray.
