what do you really know about the scene? my guess isn't much. think about the $$$$ given to these DJ's for being the #5-6-7 whatever. Lets say RJT you paid DJ Dan $25,000 to mix Ultra's latest mix compilation full on knowing that his marketing level (that being #5) would grant you around 100,000 in CD sales over an 18mos time frame. well shit, you paid the #3 DJ for his name and now what?

or

RJT you own XYZ promotions, two years ago you paid DJ Dan $3,000 for a gig at your clubs. Then 2007 hits and you're now paying him $20,000 for DJ Dan who is probably still pulling the same crowd size.

Wouldn't you feel taken advantage of? and that's just two examples.

More often than not that had to do with people completely ignorant as to who DJ Dan was making baseless assumptions about him that were completely wrong.

That being said, this is without a doubt the point on which myself and others will have to concede most to the masses. A bit trite, but hey, if that's the kind of victory you're happy with, well then congratulations on all your success.

Edit: And Ok Anthony, I hear you loud & clear buddy. Thanks for lending your vast experience to the discussion.

Now, now - I'm not important enough to disqualify.

Smiling Frog

The people who WANT it to hurt Dan and Chris Lawrence's careers are the ones who keep saying it WILL.

They hope if they repeat it often enough it will come true.

There is nothing like kicking a man when he's down, that's my motto.

Unfortunately they are only talking to about 1% of the people who go out to clubs on these boards. Most clubbers will never even hear about this, nor would they even care.

Mint. I'm going to vote RJT & Mikey in the DJ Mag top 100 cheaters list

This whole affair make's me grow a big rubbery one. I hope more people start cheating

Posted by DaveT on Oct-10-2007 21:11:

I think "disqualifying" DJs might be a tad brash. I mean, there are certainly instances where the DJ is probably involved, but hurting them when there's a good chance they weren't involved but their management had something to do with it.

I don't think some of these DJs would dare to a chance of being caught cheating like this knowing how much it could tarnish their image.

AS people have said, DJMag is a (stupid) marketing tool for DJs. It certainly impacts your booking fee.

What I could have done is 1) In cases where there are several votes from the same IP, try to learn if that IP is a corporpation or ISP that could possibly use NATing. Some ISPs like AOL use NATing because the world is getting short on IP addresses. So THOUSANDS of people will show up online under the same IP address. In these cases, I'd allow two of the votes to count. In other cases, just make it so only one of the IP address count.

Or just make it all easy and make it only one vote per IP address.

Their ranking will be impact greatly right there, but they could still end up being ranked somewhere that more accurately reflects where they would be without any cheating having been involved.

From there, put them on probation for like five years and if it happens again, then ban them from that year and any future DJ polls.

In the end if CL's and DJ Dan's old marketing manager certainly caused his fiasco on his own, I hope he is raped of all his assets and money. This type of thing could really tarnish their image when it comes to people who don't know the whole story or don't believe they really didn't have anything to do with it themselves. It really sucks for CL more than Dan in the end as CL is certainly one of the best there is.

DJ Dan who? Even DJ Dean is bigger then this guy

Posted by CHRles on Oct-10-2007 21:13:

In defense of Christopher Lawrence, the man's ranking on DJ Mag was quite high even prior to last year. He also usually ranks pretty high on other polls, especially US-based ones.
He's a veteran of the scene, and while he may not have the same kind of pull as Trance DJs from Holland or the UK, I'd venture to say he's been one of the more popular DJs on the planet for quite some time now.
Best thing about Lawrence is that his Trance sets are more unique and underground leaning then a lot of other DJs that are billed as Trance DJs. The problem is that this may not necessarily translate into a high position on DJ Mag. Best reference would be John 00 Fleming.

hey Charles, when is the next dance station going under??? hehehe

But in a serious note, DJs shouldn't cheat. Bottom Line.

Posted by Dojomaster26 on Oct-10-2007 21:21:

This is really going to hurt some reputations...

DJ Dan and CL are good enough DJs that they didn't have to use scripts to place well on the charts. It annoys me that some marketing teams are getting greedy for money with these moves.

TA: Stop pretending like you don't know who DJ Dan is. He is one of the biggest House DJs in the US and its a real shame that his management/whoever had to do this for some votes on a popularity contest.

yep i think he ranked 10th on the list in 2005. and he have been known as "americas nr 1 trance dj" for several years now.

Can't help it, but I never heard of the guy before he made such an 'impresive' rise last year

Why they havent done that from day 1 I'll never know. Allowing multiple votes per IP is just asking for trouble and in my opinion is utterly stupid.

How can people really believe that these DJ's had neither the knowledge of these goings on nor a direct hand in it?

U could even threaten them with it. Seriously though, not Armin!! OMG! O NOES!

Posted by Whirloop on Oct-10-2007 23:34:

Would this mean it's possible to sabotage the list (or the authencity of the votes, if there ever was) sort of disqualifying DJs in the list by scriptvoting for them without the DJs having anything to do with it?
I'm sure "I had nothing to do with it" sounds like a pretty comfortable explaination and could hurt the fanbase if the DJ is suspected for cheating in the list.

If that is possible, the concept of that list turns from bad to shit...

Why would Dj Mag do something like THAT?

By allowing multiple votes from IP addresses they can boost their vote numbers and charge advertisers MORE money for ads in their Top 100 issue.

I bet the advertisers would shit themselves if they knew how many "unique votes" there really were, ie. how many individual computers voted in the poll. The advertisers are paying big dollars for ads based on a lie.

Shame shame shame. I love it.

that is what i'm saying in the NYTA thread.

Ppl actually think cuz a dj is nice *woah huge shock factor to some ppl* that it means they didn't know shit that was going on.

You got problems if you hire a Marketing Manager and don't know the shit he is doing to Market your ass.
