It's not that hard to make pretty danceable beats using time signatures other than 4/4, but it's kind of pointless if you want DJs to play your tracks, unless you have a 4/4 intro and outro to help them out as you said.

I made a pretty decent beat in 7/8 time a while ago. I may try to include it as interlude in a 4/4 track sometime.
