I thought about getting a G2 engine... it's a fun idea. Being able to, basically, build your own Nord Lead 3.. with like.. 10 OSCS!!! OMFG....

I decided I really didn't feel like programming it, though.

Oh, and in case anyone cares, I bought a Q Rack recently (shipped from Israel, hasn't come in yet).

Next on the list: Yamaha TX-802, Waldorf Pulse, and an... Access Virus (original). I'm going to give the original Virus a chance and see if they got it right the first try. I think it may be a lot more usable since it's:
1) not buggy
2) not crowded with mediocre features
3) adheres a lot more to "a knob for every feature"

Oh, and it's also disgustingly cheap. I can pick it up for less than $400. I'm going the cheap-route with these three instruments. The pulse is also < $400 and the TX-802 is < $200.

But I won't hold onto it if I can't enjoy using it through the hardware interface. Sames goes for the Waldorf Pulse. Don't expect a TX-802 bank from me, though. I'm not even going to fucking try to program that thing ... it's going to be a preset machine as far as I'm concerned. Good thing there are a lot of presets available on the web ...

Alan I'm sure I have you on MSN but I can't find you, can you give me a prod next time you're online so I can find you!

Nice. I really miss mine (even though it wasn't actually "mine" - a friend left it at my house for a few months).

I don't know - my opinion on the original is that it's so limited that it's the primary reason people still ignorantly consider any Virus to be a one-trick pony "trance synth". I personally think Access started to get it right with the "B" and made huge improvements with the "C" (yes, albeit with more menu diving). But, I'll be curious to hear your thoughts if you get an "A".

That's the way I'm already starting to feel about my FS1R that I got a week ago today. Imagine what is widely regarded as the deepest FM hardware synth (+ formant shaping synthesis) ever made, with just this to program it:

Yeah, a small screen with sub-menus and cryptic text galore. Unfortunately, the numerous free software editors that were once widely available for it are no longer anywhere to be found. Oh well, I'm going to keep looking and working at it because this synth is capable of some pretty incredible things.

Are we seriously supposed to be able to program that? I'd consider the FS1R but I'm really only interested in the classic 80s DX7 sound, so the TX-802 fits my need for that perfectly.

The FS1R actually includes all of the original DX7 sounds and will import sysex patches from any of the DX/TX synths. Then, you get to try to manipulate those sounds with 4 knobs, 9 buttons, etc.

Actually, with the right editor, it's supposedly nearly as easy as programming FM7/8, but the problem is finding those elusive editors.

Limited compared to later ones, definitely. But compared to most instruments ... not so much. 12 voices kinda sucks, but at least you're freakin' guaranteed those 12 unlike the 25 you'll probably get out of the TI. Other than that, I don't want the 3rd OSC of the Virus B since it requires menu diving, and I won't use any of the FX of the B, especially the Phaser since it's a very over-used character.

Ah the Q, I've got one of those little yellow bundles of joy coming to me soon fingers crossed!

Cheers guys on the feedback on the NL3.. I've tried looking for one either the keyboard or rack (I guess there's no difference) but there's none on ebay or soundonsound.com. I'll just have to keep looking.

you should look in gumtree as well.

Here are a few others:

Vintage Synth Explorer Classifieds - pretty active and I've purchased several synths through their ads.

Harmony Central Classifieds - ditto.

craigslist - I see NL3s somewhat frequently in the SF/Bay area ads. Check the ads for your city and, especially, nearby large cities/metropolitan areas near you.

Just picked up a TX 802 for $130. Should add some fun 80s mojo to my tracks.

TB-303 FTW. Trance might not have ever existed if not for this tiny monster.

Gearslutz.com classifieds as well. Loads of gear heads there with some pretty amazing setups. The classified section alone adds 3-4 pages per day of people selling stuff.

Waldorf Q and TX 802 have arrived. A Waldorf Pulse is on it's way.

Will update with my thoughts on the TX 802, Q, Pulse, and XT in a couple months. I may have everything worth getting at this point .... I'm certainly just about out of room.

I decided against the Access Virus A. I don't think the menu-diving on the original would be any worse than on the Q, but, like the JP80x0, I just don't want its sound in my music. This being the primary reason I sold my TI a while back. The original is cheap, but even the TI won't do anything my other synths can't do better.

Updated with my thoughts on the Waldorf Pulse. What a beast it is!!

Well, I did just did the opposite of Alanzo - I found a great deal on another Prophet 08 and picked it up. I sold mine a while ago after buying the PER, MEK, and Mopho, but I'm going back to it. Now, I just need to decide which of the three DSI synth(s) to sell to cover my costs, make space and inputs for the P08, etc.

I'm leaning toward keeping the PER and selling the MEK and Mopho. Thoughts? BTW, I've still got my Polar TI1, Nord 3, and Yamaha FS1R and they aren't going anywhere.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who is silly enough to sell a synth and then turn around and buy it again a year or two down the line. How much did you pay? I resold mine for $1,100 and made about $100 on the sale.

I would sell the MEK as well... and the TI . How are the sub oscs on the MoPho? A sub OSC can really fatten a sound up, but it may not be so on the MoPho. I guess you wouldn't be interested in a Tetr4?

The nice thing about the PER is you get the SoundTower software included. It makes editing even easier than with the hardware PEK.

I think thats what you after, thats the US ebay , the australian one may not have any, and the UK one may

Posted by Energy_3 on Jul-31-2009 18:51:

i just purchased a KB virus keyboard, 590 US which i think is great, but will sell it back in Australia, these babies are hard to come by back home, so make some money on it.

$950 shipped - it's only a few months old and still in the original packaging.

No way, not selling the TI! I'm not really interested in the Tetr4, but I think I need to sell my Mopho quick before it's released! The Mopho's subs really do fatten up the sound, especially for a <$400 synth.

cyro you payd 950 for a prophet 08? thats a good score that is. One just well it didnt sell, but it was listed at 1150.oo was thinking of getting it but didnt.

Posted by cryophonik on Aug-01-2009 02:14:

Yeah, and it's basically in new condition. The funny thing is, it was posted over at KVR for 3 or 4 days and no one bought it!

That's because buying on forums is sketchy. I sure wouldn't do it. eBay keeps you nice and safe (for the most part).

Not if you're smart about it. I always check their eBay feedback and any other feedback. KVR has its own feedback thread as well (as does vintagesynths, etc.). Between eBay and KVR, this guy had hundreds of positive feedbacks (including a transaction with other people that I "know" through other forums) and no negative ones.
