Must be the small-town in me...but I find it strange to share space with a person, especially in passing them on the street, and not acknowledge their existence.

LOL! Yeah I know what you mean.

And something about people with dogs, I automatically say "Hi" "Good morning" or something... I think maybe because small town dog walkers are always so overly friendly...

Here I still get weird looks. Even my neighbours that live in the same building give me weird looks when I say hi, and I do that all the time.

For both those who live here, and those who don't, what do you like and dislike about the city? Please specify in your post whether you live here or not.

I live here.

Pros:

- Great nightlife
- Lots of great cultural events in the city (especially in the summer)
- Great employment opportunities for the line of work I'd like to get into (I'm pretty sure the employment opportunities in Toronto are pretty good in general)
- Low crime rate / generally a safe city to live in
- Friendly people
- Affluent yuppie culture
- Creative and multi-faceted fashion scene (among the general public, not necessarily fashion designers)
- Lots of parks and trees
- Lots of general "variety" in the city due to the large number off immigrant communities that exist

Cons:

- Horrible transit system
- Undeveloped waterfront
- Municipal governments that never fix the above problems
- It's in North America (ie not very ideal for traveling)
- "Fun police" trying to shut things down like Cherry Beach, clubs, and making it difficult to have festivals that play electronic music

All of the above

Since you and I have talked a lot about this while we have been away together I agree 100%. Other cities in NA have done things right (Chicago with its waterfront, Boston with its parks and common areas, NYC with its homeless problem).

As we have also discussed most of the Cons can be corrected if we were ever able to get some real leadership from our municipal politicians and other levels of government. We need someone who isn't scared to make a commitment to transit, and the waterfront. Someone who isn't scared to get us going in the right direction who may not be in power to reap its benefits. Someone who will treat us as adults (how can New Orleans allow drinking on the street and we can't ever do it for certain events (pride, jazzfest, etc.).

The only thing they can't change is how close we are to other places (like you said we aren't in Europe).

i've always wondered this myself, North America, is one of the only places in the world, (save for certain Islamic countries where alcohol is prohibited altogether), where you can't openly drink in public. More specifically, within North America, Toronto I've found has some of the strictest drinking laws in Canada.

I don't understand what the issue is with all the overprotectionism that comes from the city and province concerning quality of life. Are we any less responsible than Las Vegas, Miami, or New Orleans with their more lenient laws when it comes to alchohol? You don't even have to go that far when in Montreal you'll find off licenses and very relaxed policing when it comes to drinking in public.

I too blame the 'fun' police..

I'm kind of against drinking in public, in the streets, someone mentionned how people dressed trashy, well holding a beer and walking along, is the same in my eyes.

Our police is more and more present in the lively streets in the summer and they don't hesitate giving tickets to the punks holding beers anymore. But since there's plenty of street festivals where you can drink, its kind of a non-issue here.

Whats an "off license" btw?

Posted by slingshot on May-15-2008 00:57:

The NIMBY'ism in Toronto is quite ridiculous and is a major impediment to the growth of the city in many aspects. (In my opinion of course)

Anywhere you can buy liquor that you wouldn't consume it on the premises vs. a bar/pub etc.

It's usually a shop - like a corner shop, that just happens to sell booze as well. They're very common in the UK.

I'm with you on this and everything else, same with what Graham had said.

As for the cold attitude, it's more prevalent in the suburbs IMO but I have noticed it in TO. Usually when I have gone down there probably because on weekends it's filled to the brim with suburbanites!

I finished work last night, walked to the bus stop, chatted up this younger woman there, (9:30pm) she seemed friendly enough. It was just the two of us there, then while on the bus, I said "Ciao, bye" after, no response.
Why are people in the suburbs so cold like that? (or in the GTA it seems)

The nanny political/police issues are crazy too...we're all adults, let us make our own decisions. At least with certain agreeable things.

Posted by malek on May-15-2008 01:14:

What I like

-somewhat shorter winter
-can do attitude
-Most TOTAs rock!
-clubs open past last call
-being the best in everything attitude
-don valley parkway, but the speed limit suck
-bigger city, more work opportunities
-I could become rich if I opened a 24/7 poutine joint
-very nice skyline

What I don't like
-being the best in everything attitude (trying to mimick everyone else)
-Too much multiculturalism ( i feel like I'm in india or china )
-chinatown smells
-streetcars are friggin annoying
-drivers are too cautious/slow/annoying
-last call is at 2am
-nightlife is almost non-existant ( nightlife is not only about clubbing ).
-housing cost
-dark squirrels

oh ok, but you can't drink it right on the street, you have to bring it home... every grocery can sell beer and house cheap wines.

Posted by Irishaddict on May-15-2008 01:28:

In Ontario booze is only available via LCBO. And technically yes you would have to bring home from the off license. I think his point is simply that elsewhere in the world it's not the huge deal it is here if you do decide to crack one open for the walk home.

Posted by Jayx1 on May-15-2008 01:45:

I refer to toronto anti social behaviour and attitude as "TASBO". Taken from the British "ASBO" which stands for Antisocial Behaviour Order". Obviously the T is for Toronto. Certain antisocial crimes are called ASBO crimes in the UK and many people who are a bit off are also referred to casually as ASBOs.

I think TASBO fits the majority around here quite perfectly. Because to be quite honest, collectively there are certain behaviours in Toronto that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else on the planet.

I tend to think that sometimes you really are invisable as you walk through the public here. You can look at people, talk to them and its as if you are a ghost. I rarely find that kind of non interaction elsewhere in the world.

My favs though are the famous toronto 30 second conversations. If you dont get everything in within the first 20-30 secs you lose your chance. LOL! TASBOs have the attention span of a squirrel it seems LOL!

Posted by Jayx1 on May-15-2008 01:48:

Urban Dictionary:

quote:

TASBO

Taken from the British ASBO (Anti Social Behavioural Order). A term to describe the antisocial and stand offish behaviour of typical residents of Toronto Canada. Symptoms include a hesitation to talk to strangers, rude icey stares, shortened conversations, and general overcompensation for a heightened sense of insecurity.

"When I walked into the room, nobody acknowledged my presence. I guess they don't like me?"

"No, don't worry, they are just a bunch of TASBOs."

i don't exactly think drinking in public is that classy either in a certain respect, but again when it's not something considered to be illegal or so taboo I find that people tend not to do it as much. I mean having a drink outside during a street party or festival is one thing, but in most places that I've been where this type of thing is allowed, seldom do you see people (and if you do it's usually the tourists) walking down the street with a beer in hand.

I kind of like it how in Paris, people head down to the Seine river in the late afternoons to enjoy a bottle of wine and simply relax or socialize. that's the type of thing I wish I had the freedom to do in Toronto without being handed a ticket by the 'fun' police.
