This was the ninth year I've gone to DEMF and the difference that has been made since Paxahau started running the event is unbelievable.

When the festival was first starting it was good but far less organized and the quality of talent often times lacking. After a few years of different organizers and losing lots of money they changed it from a free festival to the format they have now where you can get a weekend pass for 40 bucks. Best bargain I've had in the dance music scene in a long time. The quality of talent they bring in and level of production at the stages is absolutely top notch.

The organization of talent on the stages, getting into the festival, handling the crowd, and quality of sound and staging all makes the festival very easy to enjoy.

More so than anything this party is about the atmosphere that exists there all weekend. While the tunes are top notch, they for once are secondary to the party vibe that exists in Hart Plaza, which is one of the better electronic music venues I've ever been to.

Five stages situated in the middle of Detroit's impressive skyline right on the Detroit river. Each one of the stages has an area to get up close to the dj for some more intensified dancing, or equally as accessible areas where you can literally sit on a blanket having a picnic in perfect sight of the dj and no loss in sound quality.

To add to the quality of the festival itself, the variety in personality types attending the festival make it one of the more interesting places to hang out. The people I saw this year literally ranged from young babies dancing in their cribs to 75 year old hippies, with tad of girls in furry boots and guys in track and field style unitards in between.

The Beatport stage stole the show this weekend. Consistently over the weekend I'd walk around the festival and end up right back at the Beatport tent because the tunes were just better there than anywhere else.

Highlights for sure were Paco Osuna, and the Lee Burridge, Josh Wink, Dubfire combo to close the Beatport stage on Monday night. Richie was in no means a disappointment but not as good as last year. Booka Shade was an absence that I felt this year but catching bits of Mark Farina and Speedy J was another example of how the production levels were increasing this year. Moby was interesting to watch on Saturday night. He was playing much more banging techy stuff than he did in the Kool Haus and was climbing around the stage jumping around. It was good for a while but did get repetitive.

This year I chose not to do any afterpartying and that is honestly the wisest decision I could have made. The festival is very draining being in the sun on your feet for three long days in a row. Being outdoors at the stages last year was so much more fun that the afterparties that this year I wanted to save my energy for enjoying the daytime and I was really thankful to have done that.

This year was a totally different experience for me from having a completely different group of people there, but was equally as enjoyable.

Already looking forward to next year.

Missed you at this one BIG time Lil G!!

Which one did you book at again? Is this the place that had the no alcohol policy?

Yep.
The COURTYARD Marriott across the street was a-ok with guests and alcohol. At the regular Marriott it was a big procedure for guests and no booze, though we begged the bellhop to deliver it to us. Our room on the 26th floor didn't face the festival (it faced downtown detroit) but we still heard bass quite loudly on Monday when we were trying to sleep.

I heard really good things about the corktown inn, the shorecrest is a fave of many Toronto folks and of course, the Comfort Zone Inn is becoming a TOTA favorite as well.

Yeah I would stay @ the Holiday INN next year for a couple reasons::

1. The shuttle to and from the hotel was inconvenient on the way back to the hotel, I would have rather walked the 5 mins to the Holiday Inn
2. We got in trouble for having people in our room who WERE staying in our hotel, just not our room, LAME
3. I went to party at the Holiday with the crew and it was party central, every room was partying with eachother. You could even smoke in the hallway.
4. PLUS, I liked the room better @ Holiday

The only positive thing about our hotel was a 5 min walk to IHOP.

Ahh. Gotcha.

Well, I absolutely have the same sentiments as you lars, most def next year doing the holiday inn express.

short walk, a quite lax atmosphere in the hotel for shenanigans, and the rooms were nice/fine.

After hearing so many good things about this years DEMF, and having a "good, but not mind-blowing time" at Mutek this year, I think I may be a bit more inclined to pick DEMF over Mutek next year.

Yeah, but meh. Being able to drink in my room wasn't that imperative to me having a good time. Why take a trip if you're gonna jew it anyways?

You saw our view right?

I would not trade this for being able to drink in my room.

And ew to party central. I think that's ghetto/sketch. This isn't high school prom.

I guess I'm getting old/lame. :/

edit: Skipper makes a good point about the music/bass. I could see it being bothersome if I were trying to sleep as well. It started around 11am/12pm every day.

they shoulda had a boat cruise.. that would be bonkers... or did they and im a noob?

I would choose the holiday inn because i was fully satisfied when i stayed there last year, not because i wanna save... also yes it was party central but at the same time it was hardly sketchy/ghetto... we just had our friends back in our room not randoms. and being able to drink in my room is a HUGE deciding factor for me!!

i guess i'll just have to check out the view from your room!

Posted by MissK on Jun-04-2008 16:53:

I don't know about everyone else but I went there to party!

This isn't a beach vacation. I don't need a view.

haha, except for the one random with the stereo t-shirt that Graham freaked out about. I still laugh when I think of that incident.
