The GTIs like the one bas has are fantastic imo. Its a very nice blend of style, size, speed, and utility.

Ok I will see your 22k and raise you, a used GTI for 14-18 2yrs old. You are still driving a more fun car by getting the GTI. Plus performance parts are harder to come by in the sense that not every chinese manufacturer makes parts, but at least you know they are always quality.

If you are going to make payments to own, you might as well get the one you want. I wouldnt spent $22k on an autotrader deal eather. If I get a pre-owned car it will HAVE to be CPO with warranty.

Really, out of all my friends cars I've driven the GTI easily gets the best review. There's obviously better cars out there, but like Clovis said, for the price everything comes together well.
