If a town that probably has 50000 people puts such delusions of greatness into their inhabitants, I wonder how people in London, Paris or New York think of themselves. I've heard of dutch people complaining of a similar phenomenon in Amsterdam. But maybe this is all in my head. |

as one who usually travels alone i know what you mean, thread starter
it doesn't bother me much,
i generally tend to cook for myself.
or just eat fruit.
but sometimes i go out to restaurants
and when i enter
'table for 1?'
YES TABLE FOR ONE BITCH!!!!
never fails.
and then certain people around me just stare.
but i am actually quite good at socializing,
and sooner or later i have someone to hangout with.
and next time i'm in that country, i have a friend waiting for me.
so yeah, take it as an opportunity to meet new people you would otherwise not meet if you were not alone. por decir...if you had someone to talk to, you would generally close out anyone else...so take the chance and meet new people. cheers m8

I think the same issue also applies when you got the movies alone.
I've only gone to the movies alone 2 times (Matrix & Dark Knight), but I didn't think much of it at the time. Still both times I got these weird looks when I said "one ticket please".

| Originally posted by Scottaculous I travel a lot for work. Currently, I'm in Germany drinking every beer they make. If I had a choice, I would rather eat with other people because I enjoy conversations and listening to other's life experiences. Sometimes, usually the weekends, I eat alone. The main problem I have with eating alone is boredom. There is only so much observing and taking in my surroundings I can do without being, what I think is, rude. Usually I bring a book or customize my Crackberry - something to focus my mind onto. . |

My mom goes to the movies alone all the time. She loves movies but she hates having to invite a friend because they always want to make a huge night of it and get drinks after or dinner and bla bla bla and my mom just wants to get her candy and see the movie and then go home lol She probably goes alone at least twice a month.
Eating alone is awesome because you can enjoy your food without her talking about things like hair and the dog she had when she was 5 that make you want to jam a butter knife in your own eye. If its with guy friends its not bad, we just grunt like cavemen and eat our food before the big fake show of who pays the bill comes up.
In Korea eating alone was awesome. They would stare and then i would start coughing uncontrollably. Koreans think all white people have aids and are germ ridden. I even managed to make a little girl cry once...so great.

Personally, I couldn't care less if I eat alone or with other people. It's nice to have a conversation while dining, but then again not having that communal experience of eating with other people doesn't take away from any meal I'm having.
Like I said before, this thought never crossed my mind until this thread.

| Originally posted by OrZonE wtf are you on about? How is a persons involvement in an article any indication of their level of embarrassment of eating alone? I often indulge myself in some sort of reading material when eating, much more entertaining than observing your food for 20 minutes. Also, what's wrong w/ sending an sms while eating? How you found a parallel between all of the above and embarrassment is beyond me. |

ie she is self-conscious about usign her cell phone while eating alone so she assumes everyone who does so is embarassed
No, I gotcha. What I meant was, rather than accuse her of 'projection' I decided to seek her opinion on the issue, if you will.
BTW, "projection" is what this whole thread is about. If you care why a person sits alone, you will think other will care too
.
i'm pretty comfortable doing stuff alone. no use restricting yourself from doing something because someone isn't around to do it with you...if i waited to go to clubs with friends i would never have entered a club. i went alone and made friends. if i'm hungry i'm going to eat whether i have someone to eat with or not...
i love eating alone :]

| Originally posted by ScuL to be honest I share the feeling that it can be annoying at times. I also travel a lot for work and it just feels weird to go into a restaurant and occupy a table by yourself. going to restaurants is mostly a social experience and I have the feeling that other dinner guests don't really understand why you would go there alone. maybe that's more of a European culture thing, it highly depends on the country you are in as well. for instance Dutch people are the kings of stare. they will give penetrating looks and judge the people around them into the tiniest details. this is also the reason why in Amsterdam all restaurants and pubs have their seats and tables facing the street, so the guests can check out people passing by while eating.. lol. I usually try to pick a spot that gives me an overview, I don't mind facing ppl its just boring if u have nothing else to do than eat and nobody to talk to. at least watching ppl or checking out girls can be worthwhile hehe |
People stare at self conscious people, you think you're looking weird people around you start thinking the same. Simple social science.
