The Sky News Homepage states 'hundreds'. Russia is claiming it to be around 2,000. Georgia says the reports of mass killings of civilians is 'a lie'. And Red Cross is saying that 40,000 have had to evacuate.

this is such a mess, sometimes i think russia is moving into a positive direction then they go off and do something like this. i hope all goes well for those with family in the area.

Point well made, however:

The US sponsors any number of countries in the world, just as the other wealthy nations do. Every country has their "not-so-secret" alliances, like the USA and Israel.

Financially backing someone else doesn't give a country the right to go sticking their nose in anywhere in the world, unless there is reasonable evidence to suggest a worldwide threat and/or repercussions from the conflict, or that the country being attacked is essentially helpless, which seems to be the case with Georgia.

However, NATO was formed specifically to deal with conflicts such as this, and the US should act through this outlet, rather than trying to play the big kid in the playground again.

I find you comment on "post-cold war power balance" amusing. Russia is a shattered husk barely able to support it's own citizens, and you still think it possible that they could put up any kind of fight against the US, who have the most technologically advanced army and have arguably led the world with economy and influence for the past decade?

It's also amusing that you talk about a cold war power balance, because this isn't about Russia vs America, it's Russia vs Georgia, even if Georgia has the support of the US.

Russia is still very much a force to be reckoned with and thinking otherwise would be foolish, and if a nation-state were to take the same attitude, like Georgia has done these last few days, it would be suicidal.

I never implied that the US would act on its own in this situation. The US is stretched far too thin to be of any effective use in Georgia and it would most likely as you suggest work through NATO if there came to be any sort of military intervention.

This whole argument is moot anyways because Georgia has been calling for international support and so far no one is touching them.

By all accounts I've read, the Cold War ended mostly because the US had missiles with far superior range and location (i.e Turkey) to the USSR, and about 5-6 times more of them too. The war ended because the US was a far superior combatant to the USSR, who realised it too.

Let's not forget that the USSR as a state completely collapsed soon after, while the US has been stable ever since 1900 odd.

Again, it's funny to say "post-cold war test of power" because the cold war never WAS a test of power. It was an arms race and a war of politics, but never direct conflict between the two nations as far as I know, though I could be wrong.

The Cold War ended because of economic ruin and social unrest in the Soviet Union and its puppet countries caused by a number of factors including a long drawn out war in Afghanistan, Reagan's massive build up of strategic nuclear forces during the 80's and having to maintain a massive conventional force in Eastern Europe and the accession of more progressive and open parties in Russia.

If you want to go by military prowess then the US is ahead, both in conventional and nuclear capabilities, but when you talk about the nuclear capabilities its talking in terms of how many times over you can destroy the earth, and in that regards the Soviets win, but the score is something like the US 10 and Russia 16... either way everyone on the planet is fucked.

The USSR and the United States had not had non-parity in terms of strategic nuclear forces since the late 1950's.

Also, in terms of range, the USSR, China, and the United States all have missiles that can be launched within their territory and hit most anyplace on earth within 30 minutes and it has been that way for going on 45 years now. Not to mention all three of those nations, plus France and The United Kingdom have strategic nuclear submarines that can lay silently off any coast in the world and hit any target on the planet within 7 to 15 minutes. It was never, ever a question of range.
