The US government are the only organisation with the cash to take these loans off the banks. Once they've bought it for a fair value (remember these loans are backed by actual property) they can hold onto them until they gain some value.
Unfortunately far too many people have been given the impression this is bailing out Wall Street fat cats. It isn't, it is preventing the economy going into freefall and where nobody can get a loan.

most people are also too stupid to realize that the US Government could very well end up making money off of this bailout in the end

I couldn't believe my f'in eyes. House following their uninformed constiuents. Bloody idiots, let the economy crumble why don't you? |
Guess what if the market was actually a FREE MARKET the government voting a bill should not in any way tie into how a FREE Market is manipulated right? NO WRONG the government has its hands in the FREE MARKET. .
Ontop of that I don't think voting on a bill lets the economy crumble b/c the economy is already fuct, this action in the House is far to late, oh yeah and last week President Bush signed a 600 billion Dollar War Spending bill.

Free market is all well and good in theory, however, sometimes the government needs to interact! Now isn't the time to be cutting off your nose to spite your face and cheering that we've stood by our economical principles as we watch the worldwide economy going into f'in freefall!
I'm not into debating other government spending, yeah, I'd rather see the US out of Iraq but I'm no military strategist so I'm going to stay out of that.
