Usually I could care less, but I'm supposed to be grading around 40 papers right now, so naturally I'm procrastinating and attending to any distraction I can find--I'm also cleaning my house!

lol

I don't think anyone said that it is a bad thing (well, I didn't). Just that it is rather far-fetched to say that this measure will save lives - or, even more preposterously, that drunk driving deaths are in any way related to TTC fares.

It's a good thing, definitely - for commuters. I don't think that it will have much of an impact on drivers, drunk or sober.

Free cabs, now that would be something.

Now that would be something that should be supported. Even if the entire ride isn't free....say the first 10-15 kms is free.

The least the cabs can do is give back the gas surcharge they were granted to charge some time back when gas was high.

But it could prevent someone from driving that is intoxicated. Picture it - DD has a few pops downtown and can't drive the gang back to North York. Pretty easy to hop on the subway instead of paying $50+ for a taxi. And the inflated taxi fares on NYE and the lack of cabs certainly makes it a decision to drive after drinking OR take the TTC. I get that if a cab is right there and it's not that far that the TTC does not really play into it - but in some instances, a taxi is a more difficult/expensive option and could cause someone to convince themselves that they're okay to drive when they're probably not.

Does it stay open later for NYE/NYD?

I'm assuming 4am b/c in the article from the first post it said something about how many people use the TTC between midnight and 4am on NTD.

Posted by Frenchie on Dec-11-2008 20:33:

I read that, too, but wasn't sure if they meant they'd keep it open that long or they were just stating people use it more between those times.
