8. I was very optimistic a few months ago..but now i'm worried that obama is going to be a puppet..i really hope he doesn't disappoint the world and actually makes some decisions that are drastic....pulling the troops out of iraq would be a start..or at least an exit plan for the next 3-6 months..

I'm sure he'll do his best to tackle the mess Bush left behind, and I'm positive he has the best of intentions, however, realistically speaking...I'm sure he'll have boundries set for him by certain "puppeteers"...

There are a few ways of looking at this.

Not only was this a celebration of the first black president, but the first president after George W. Bush. The man fucked the country hard, well not even their country but many other countries. The simple fact that Barack won on the votes of all races, shows this was not just about race, as it was about ushering in a person that people had more faith in.

This victory was amplified by the poor management of the country for the past eight years. No, there was no such fan fare for Bush, or Clinton's inauguration, just because the country was not in the sorry state it is in today.

If you are saying that 'who cares he is black, just another guy', what planet do you come from? Sure, we should be able to look past the colour of one's skin, and judge them on their merits as an individual, and their skills, but it does not happen as it should. Racial violence is still quite common in the United States, hell even blacks in Toronto have been racially profiled. For people who want to just live their lives, and be treated as regular people, and not by how much pigmentation they have in their skin, this is a concrete reminder that things are moving in the right direction.

Obama not only represents blacks, but a new breed of American citizen. One with a multinational, and multicultural background. He is from a single mother, and worked his way up. Up until now, it seemed as only power whites, with political backgrounds, and incredible wealth were able to finance a run for the presidency. No longer will people think you have to be wealthy. He raised most of his money online from a wide variety of sources, with regular people donating to his efforts. People can actually relate to the guy, that is the big deal.

Relatability is a huge factor here.

the thread should have ended after you wrote this. well put.

Several hours later he walked into the most famous office in America for the first time as president.

Gibbs, the press secretary, said in a statement that Obama spent 10 minutes alone and read a note left for him by Bush that was in an envelope marked "To: {nldr}44, From: {nldr}43."

heh.. I'm curious as to what he wrote. Anyone know what "nldr" stands for? I know the 44 and 43 part..

I think it ought to be fairly obvious that he was referring to Non-Linear Dimensionality Reduction.

No, but they did treat her ancestors as property. Females belonged to the father, and eventually would be given/sold to her eventual husband. Do you KNOW how women were treated in the past, and how they CONTINUE to be treated today in many countries around the world? A white man hasn't owned a black slave in western civ for 60 years, women are still treated as property in countries throughout the world.

It is MUCH more significant that a woman was able to grasp power than a man. So Obama is black? He's just a man. There've been 43 other MEN who've run the United States, just like he's set out doing now. Just because he's black doesn't make a difference, fuck, it's possible he won the election BECAUSE he is black. Do you know how far a guaranteed 14% of the vote can get you? He had 90+% of those who identified with his skin colour, Hillary barely carried 50% of those who identify through gender, which is a much more important similarity than the colour the sun happened to have turned your ancestor's skin through the generations. There are WOMEN who refuse to support the idea of having a woman in power, just because she's a woman. Good fucking luck finding a black person who would agree that "A black man shouldn't be in power because he is black."

That's not to say there isn't any symbolism behind this day, after so many years of oppression and a belief that something so small as a man's ancestry could hold him back from being chosen by the people, it certainly is a significant message being sent to those who held such beliefs. But, to those of us who grew up ACCEPTING that all are equal, regardless of race, it shouldn't be a big deal. Because to us, we should simply see a 'man', not a 'black man'.

I posed this question to my fiance yesterday...if obama is half white..wouldn't he be the darkest complexioned man to be president of the US and not the first black one?

seriously? but it's the truth..he's half white and half black...he is equally of both races..he is not the first full black president..he is the darkest president..i'm not trying to take anything away from anyone..i think it should be a very proud moment that a man that is half black was elected..the US has come a long way..but he is not full black...
