| Originally posted by squirrelly That's ridiculous. You all DO realize that your tastes in life and in music can change and develop over the years, right? To not date someone because they do not like one specific genre of music is retarded. Chances are, there's a middle ground where you find music both of you like. And you never know if someone could end up liking something further down the road. You should be focusing on whether or not this person makes you laugh and if you have fun together - not OMG they don't like electronic!!!!!!!!!!!!! And sometimes, the fact that two people DON'T like ALL of the same things - makes things interesting and fun, and gives each person the chance to learn about what the other likes. //relationship guru talk |

I honestly don't think I could date someone who hates my music that much. Seeing as it's such a huge part of my life, it's pretty much all I listen to, and all the music events I attend are EDM events, and I don't see my music tastes changing any time in the next decade or 2.. I frankly don't think it'd be a good idea to date someone who loathes something I love so much. I dated someone like that in the past, We were constantly arguing about it, drove each other nuts.. so no, I don't think I could do it. Now if it was someone who was pretty indifferent to EDM, or didn't mind it and could groove to one or 2 of my tunes once in a while.. yes, why not.. we could work something out. And I agree that we don't have to have everything in common, I wouldn't want to date an exact replica of myself anyway. But having similar musical tastes is very important to me. |

I think you're being awfully insensitive here, squirrelly. Trance music is life. Just why can't you respect this?
Yeah if music is your greatest common denominator in a relationship, you've got problems, lol. Fucking think about that logically for a minute.
i'd fuck the shit out of you squirrelly.

| Originally posted by squirrelly Even if the person absolutely hated dance music with a passion - I cannot say that I would rule out dating them. Completely disregarding someone because of their taste in music (to me) seems petty and ridiculous. I know that (for myself and my friends) none of us have exactly the same tast in music as we had ten years ago. Even five years ago. So would I write off someone because of a genre of music I like RIGHT NOW? No. There's a lot more to life than just music (yes, I said it), and I (me) am not going to base an entire relationship off of taste of music. I have work, friends, hobbies, and a whole life outside of music - if the person hated my job, friends, hobbies, AND music - well then yes, I would have to say we couldn't withstand a relationship. |

This is a question of pride, I think. People live in their little bubbles of interests, and anything outside of said bubble might just ruin their whole little world. No, it's really not fun being with somebody who is your complete antagonist - but that's not the question here. What is actually of interest here is: are you so self-absorbed, so self-involved in your little niche, it prohibits you from socializing with people who are slightly unlike yourself? So proud of your interests (which will change as you age, as squirrelly already brought up) that it hinders your ability to form relationships with others? Of course it's hard to say for certain what you've missed - if anything - but does it not seem imperative that certain people could be alienating a lot of personal development and worthwhile social situations merely because they are so fixated on a single subculture?
Though I think a few of you have effectively answered this.

Please, I don't spit when I talk.
