Funny analogy, although I don't think "hipsterism" is an import to the U.S., is it?

No and its been around forever.

Luckily its gotten better.

Around here at least hipsters used to be also emo.

Don't think the goth-lite style hair and eyeliner or screamo...

Think tight pants, suit jackets and connor oberst and a mop of messy dark hair.

On another note, hipster type girls are my perfection in females...

If they're not emo, what are they now?

it's a faggy term. something you'd read in cosmo

I think techno has had hipster cred for a while. At least the people I've known who were "hipsters" or associated with them were willing to give more credit to techno and dance music in general than I would have expected from the "rockist" attitude that hipsters were "supposed" to have. It's kind of hard to tell who's a "hipster" anyway, because IMO you can easily have "hipster" attitudes and tastes without adopting the fashions, and even people who fit the stereotype perfectly probably wouldn't characterize themselves as "hipsters."

It's amusing to watch cultural trends come and go.

Huh... odd.

Clad... gotcha... gay.

I listen to hipster music... anyone up for some math rock?

Posted by Slylee on May-24-2009 15:38:

all of those lables are fucking annoying. it's like why can't people just be who they are without having to conform to some sort of extreme fashion that is associated with their likes and dislikes just so they can tell the world who they are? lol news flash...no one gives a shit. anything overdone annoys me i guess. i'm always just floating somewhere along the middle of things when it comes to fashion and music, etc...

Lots of people do care, though, mostly fairly young people.

yea i guess. i just find it to be a sign of immaturity i don't know why. does that makes sense? i guess i'm mainly talking about like emo people and rockers, etc... people who have to make a statement, physically. i have found that the majority of those people trying to make such a strong statement with their fashion are actually no different than the people they claim to hate lol in other words, they're just typical adolescent-ish people with nothing really important to contribute to society. if you're going to make a statment or try to tell the world something about you, then DO something...don't wear something.

Oh I hear you. It's easy, especially when you're young, to fall into "block thinking," the view that if people don't adopt your whole lifestyle and range of tastes, they must be sellouts or simply stupid. Part of this is having tastes that are to some extent a reaction against something else, like "mainstream music."

Then again, we ourselves, the "middling people," shouldn't generalize too much: I doubt all so-called "hipsters" take themselves with the deadly seriousness of the stereotype. I'm sure plenty of them do what they do as much for plain fun as for anything else. And I actually think the boundaries between "indie" types and everyone else are eroding.
