Independent of genetics, I feel there is also something to be said for those who are born and raised in an environment whereby healthy nutritional selections simply weren't encouraged.
Now, there's certainly a pillar of personal responsibility over one's health that can't be overlooked (once someone reaches the point where they have more presiding control over it), but when considering these above mentioned mitigating circumstances, not every fat person deserves to be lumped together with that guy, who ravenously consumes to the deliberate neglect of their own health and appearance (especially those who make a concentrated effort at actively fighting against inherited behaviors).

Yeah, I'm largely referring to the types of influences that exist within the family, but since you brought it up, the broader communal influences regarding matters of nutrition is something that really can't be overlooked.
In San Francisco, for example, there's been a major push at providing better avenues for healthier eating in some of the more economically depressed areas, since they tend to be inundated with local markets that offer little more than your average gamut of junk food (chips, cookies, soda, etc). When your immediate area consists largely of stores like this, your flexibility in making sound health choices becomes rather limited indeed.

The lunches that the school makes could easily be better. Too bad the farm bill totally removes that ability. |
), and not without controversy, of course.

| Originally posted by Paradox Lost Hasn't the elimination of traditional junk items from your the cafeteria menu been all the rage in California for the past few years? I know in the Bay Area, they've steadily done away with things like soft drinks, and your typical grease saturated entrees (you know, things that actually made lunchtime something worth looking forward to ), and not without controversy, of course. Not sure how it is in So Cal, but they've been aggressively phasing in healthier substitutes rather quickly up here. |

| [b]Originally posted by gehzumteufel Okay, that's cool, but if you were to take 50 shamus, how many would have a genetic or legitimate health disorder claim? That is the point Jay and I are making. We are not discounting the people that ACTUALLY have the issue, just the claim that seemingly every shamu seems to make. |
