I had the weirdest time growing up in a 90% black school

They wouldn't even consider me white cause I was french

I will agree there are cases of institutional racism but I think a lot of people hide behind the term because they don't want to take responsibility for their own downfalls.

I don't really thing the US is endemically any worse in terms of racism than anywhere else, in fact its considerably better than some places (I was born in South Africa, back when it sucked, well actually it still sucks but apartheid isn't law) Its just the glossing over behind a veneer of civility, giggling like you mentioned and gross, condescending political correctness verging on downright insulting.
That's the impression I get from the McDonalds advert. Which is a bit of a shame as this kind of thing doesn't need to be made public policy, it can be simply a distinguished and enforced company policy of equal hiring. The UK is quite similar in a lot of respects but there is no way in hell until it freezes over the UK would vote in a black prime minister, so in a way I think its a sign the US is maturing as a nation.
In both countries I've felt very uncomfortable mixing with certain people you can literally feel they're arcing up with dangerous levels of antipathy in your presence.

LOL. Yes, McDonald's is a nourishing, sustaining force for the African American community.

it isn't like this type of marketing is not done for white people as well.
