Difference being that I'm not imagining a generally superior past to the present. I'm talking about the decline of one specific radio show.

Do you genuinely think under my own conditions I'm not allowed to claim anything or anyone has declined over the years?

The EM has gone downhill for very simple, logical and unsentimental reasons:

1. Once upon a time, continuous music without advertisements was very rare on the radio. The BBC was one of the only radio stations that could do it while attracting prominent DJs. Therefore the Essential Mix was a rare chance for an extended live DJ mix on the radio. Today, Internet radio has basically erased that. Many DJs play two hour radio sets every single week. The EM is no longer special.

2. The EM is now so old that there it can no longer sustain itself on a limited pool of high-quality DJs playing limited number of sets. If you expect to deliver an EM every single week you eventually have to extend the invitation to lesser DJs, thus diluting the quality.

3. When a DJ has already played 15 billion EMs, they aren't going to put the same effort in. So the one-time EM legends are now more prone to phoning in their mixes. When Oakenfold trainwrecked to shit in 2006, the writing was on the wall.

Paul Oakenfold - returning back to his '99 days but that's more wishingfull thinking

Does anyone have a list of what has been every essential mix of the year since the beginning of the show? Or has it only been awarded since '99? (I think Basement Jaxx won it that year.)

Theo Parrish would rip an EM in half. As I think Kyle Hall would too.

exactly although most internet radio is of such poor quality and it's a shame that some 'shows' get such a following because they're basically useless, the EM esp back in the days, you knew you'd get the 'best' of what each genre picked had to offer.

A drum N Bass mix that contains less than 1 million tracks in 2 hours.

barring oakey who is awful these days anyway, that's a horrific choice. Those people mostly have their own shows, watering down the market by playing tracks from the same few people week in, week out. I accept the EM has gone crap, but there is still a long way it could fall and inviting people like le saux, kandi and super8& tab would really be the downfall of it.

agreed with your response but other than Binary Finary who i know one of the lads and they are coming out with some exciting stuff soon.

do they actually DJ? I always thought they were just producers, although these days most producers mix, gone are the days where a DJ mostly just mixed other peoples music, now they produce (badly sometimes lol) and vice-versa
