Then you're willing to recognize riddles that haven't been ciruclated so widely to develop this "catch" as brain-teasers since they require ingenuity? But, at one point all these riddles required someone to think about the problem in a clever way, still do actually, if you don't have the punch line memorized/made known to you.

A brain-teaser, as the term simply states, is anything that teases the brain, such as riddles and optical illusions.

Nobody ever "thinks" about riddles. They're basically really bad jokes, with the punchlines known only to the unfunny dorks who come up with them and later to the poor bastards who have to endure them. There is no cleverness whatsoever involved, unless one of the synonyms for "clever" is "asshole."
