Not a long weekend... but i have to say that carl cox last fall was a legendary event. As was the Gift. And thats just based on what I like. There have been other heavy hitting nights since then as well.
Not every night is MY scene but thats always been the case.
I notice different crowds for different nights and that to me shows that the scene is quite fragmented (yet still pretty big)
One thing that is missing from this discussion is considering what Guvernment is doing now that they weren't doing before.
Previously you had giant mega all access parties with multiple headliners in multiple different genres in multiple different rooms. Perfect example of this has already been mentioned in this thread, Labour of Love 2006. At that party it was literally impossible to see all of the big name talent.
But something else that happened at that party was that there was a prog/tech crowd, mixing with a trance crowd, mixing with a breaks crowd. Each different group complained about the other groups. A large percentage of music listeners are primarily a fan of one portion of dance music, so forcing them to mingle with 8 thousand other partiers just made them complain about each different group they weren't a part of.
Now it seems like Guvernment has taken the approach of combining Like with Like. Instead of having huge all access parties where there were dozens of headliners spanning every different genre of dance music, they are throwing more smaller parties that have a few headliners. But the major difference is that at those parties all the headliners play the same style of music, appealing to one specific group of fans.
Parties like the tech fest at family day and the trance mayhem that was contact used to be combined into one all access, now they are separate events.

I'm surprised that my #1 fan (VDub) hasn't commented in this thread yet.
Where are you my good buddy?

; Porter practically melting the walls in Gallery; I believe it was Icey et al dropping breaks in the Orange room; and lastly, I could also be wrong on this, but wasn't DJ Hype headlining the D'n'B lineup in the Drink that night?

Originally posted by The Ear I believe he was talking about the party m'lady. As that LoL kicked the living piss out of anything that has come & gone since. Hernan & Digweed in main room; Armin, Junkie XL, & Ferry closing with a 6 hour set until 10am in the KH ; Porter practically melting the walls in Gallery; I believe it was Icey et al dropping breaks in the Orange room; and lastly, I could also be wrong on this, but wasn't DJ Hype headlining the D'n'B lineup in the Drink that night? I mean, sweet jesus!, I don't think we'll get anything like that again.
do a search for LoL'04 or LoL'05 - those were HUGE!

Originally posted by PurpleHaze But the original comment from graham, on which I quoted and commented, was stating that OTHER THAN guverment main room and KH, the orange room would be better suited for their style than the Drink. We're not comparing orange room and drink generally or on their own, we're comparing which room would be better for the martinez brothers to play in of the two, which of course is the orange room.

Originally posted by jon jon lol yes I understood said original point, and I still completely disagree...

just personal preference really, I much prefer the vibe + sound + size of the Drink... I've had some insane nights in there, and I think the Martinez Bro would tear it apart..

Originally posted by PurpleHaze ok, now can you list your reasons as to why you would prefer to hear the martinez brothers spin in the drink over the orange room?? ![]() im really curious to hear!
personally i think the drink's soundsystem is pretty ear piercing, never tuned properly
don't get me wrong, i've had some bonkers nights in the drink too, but their style is definately not suited for that room
low ceiling is a no no!!
martinez brothers is deep house/tech/big room sound hence why i think they would be best "suited" in orange room...big ceiling, big dancefloor, more "open", better acousted system...not cramped, low ceiling, ear piercing sound...
be realistic guys
i think i recall Martinez Brothers playing at Cobra last June??? I knew nothing much of them at that time at all. Now that I do... That would have been an amazing party...

The Drink is one of the best clubs (and most wasted based on what goes on in there now) in Toronto. Way better than The Orange Room. I can't think of anyone I'd rather see in The Orange Room over The Drink.
