I fucking hate this mentality. If that is indeed Jamie Jones' take on it I just lost most of what respect I had for him.

let me try to find the forum post so you can read the whole thing. that wasn't all.

in a nutshell- we do it for the fans, but we must charge money to cover the overhead, it costs so much because we release it on vinyl, we refuse to release it digitally because we want to "keep vinyl alive" or some whacked out excuse like that.

and yet, many of those edits are released on beatport. and the "keep vinyl alive" argument is such a cop-out, imo.

lol, let me rephrase- what or who are the jukeboxes?

here's the quotes in regards to the soul clap edits release on W+L-

gadi - hate, hate , hate, hate,
when they told me a few weeks ago that my labels weren't underground enough to cover i was quite surprised, and disappointed, but when I read this review I felt like hey fuck RA, maybe it's better if they just ignore my labels from now on.

jamie - Heres my analasys on the whole thing. I personally make and sometimes release these "edits". And heres why, I edit a LOT of music to DJ out, from Pop to disco to old house and techno records, even new ones sometimes. The only reason I ever started to put some out there was because Of the amount af people who asked me for copies. Most of them if not given away for free are only released on vinyl, which helps keep the dying vinyl market alive, and is never going to harm the original artsist as the money made barley covers the costs. And I know for a fact that Myself Gadi, Soul Clap and anyone involved has always said, if any original artsist wants anything from the release they are welcome to have all of any profits. Every single one says EDIT, which means its not an original production, or even a remix, Nobodys trying to claim this music as theirs.

Posted by UWM on Sep-23-2010 15:17:

What a joke, on both accounts. I love how Gadi and Soul Clap got all pissy that RA didn't bow down to their "cult status" and actually gave an honest criticism. I also love how this crew justifies their motives with utterly transparent lies.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Sep-23-2010 15:19:

Soul Clap, W+L. I've heard them put out mixes that sound like they just threw all their tunes into a jukebox and hit shuffle on more than one occasion. Soul Clap's recent RA podcast, for example.

edit: it's Gadi, I think that's the worst for putting together those kind of terrible, half-assed sounding "mixes". It's insulting when people don't try. And if it's supposed to be ironic, that's fucking whack.

Oh, also...Ben Watt seems to be supporting this new wave of "mixtape" bullshit, where djs just throw together random collections of eccentric and obscure sounding tracks. I can surf Youtube recommendations on my own time, thanks.

Waw!!

I dont often read these threads, but this one has definitely caught my attention. Heres my analasys on the whole thing. I personally make and sometimes release these "edits". The only reason I ever started to put some out there was because Of the amount af people who asked me for copies. I dont mind bad reviews, I never ever ever personally pay any attention to reviews when choosing which music i like/buy, because a review is 1 persons opinion, and i know for a fact that my taste rarely agrees with most.

Also, even if 1 person who hears this edit, likes it goes to find out who the singer is, discovers its jamie foxx, and then maybe buys his album, surely thats a good thing. And i know this does happen, why? because I've done it countless times. E.g, heard a disco house record, (that was called something totally different) found out what the sample was, and then bought the original record.. boom, everyones a winner...

My 1 quipp with the actual review is to say that hot natured is part of a put a kick drum on it posse. If this reviewer can send me 1 track thats anything to do wit hot natured where only a kick has been added, i will stand on the dj booth of dc10 next monday naked eating not only my shorts, but my t-shirt socks shoes and pants too... this i actually found quite spiteful, as its just not true. We always make sure to chop the track up, add beats, most of the time new basslines, new melodies sometimes and so many other parts...anyway, thats my 2 cents..

have a nice day all...

I wasn't there in person so I can't corroborate this, but Gadi played at an afters here last year that was widely regarded as the "worst set they'd ever heard" by a lot of people there.

dude, the actual thread is vomit-inducing. soooo much fucking cock-sucking because gadi and jamie posted itt. "best release of the year," "nonsense review," and the ubiquitous "will rock the dancefloors, that's what it's all about!!!"

i'm glad a journalist from a semi-respected resource finally had the balls to express what a lot of us have been noticing lately in regards to releases such as these.

I mean really, if people are willing to accept that as "fresh" and "unique", I might as well start dj'ing. I have taste in music too!

Posted by UWM on Sep-23-2010 15:31:

And probably better taste at that.

My comments to technocolour in the other thread were a bit abrasive, but SC/W+L/etc are the perfect example of the comical arrogance displayed by too many people in this scene simply because they throw parties or put out some records that are popular at the time.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Sep-23-2010 15:33:

Lol, my friend's Facebook status today is totally relevant to this thread. It reads "xxxxxx xxxxxxxxx thinks people should not believe their own hype...that's when you become a GIANT DOUCHE!"

it was a bit reactionary, but it's easy to automatically assume someone who you've never seen posting in c0r is being a douche- totally understandable. this drives me nuts about a lot of people out there though, even including a small handful of people on TA. greg had a big fucking problem with pulling that shit when he was actively posting (thank god the emphasis is "was").

don't get me wrong, i myself am or at least feel a bit arrogant about my own artistry even without any sort of notoriety; but i'm not throwing it in people's faces left and right.

Well, I have no idea what schemata you had coming into watching this video, but I honestly have no idea what sets Seth Troxler apart from some other guy to begin with. I had no idea who he was when I watched the video and I thought it was hilarious. Whether it was intentional, contrived, or he's just flat out crazy, it was hilarious to me. I don't care if to him it's a vision, because to me it's like watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. And I'd probably suck his cock too.

have you heard the Wolf+Lamb XLR8R podcast? the mixing is so gash that my friend and i came up with a theory that it MUST be a joke.

then again, Gadi played one of the best sets i've ever heard at the Marcy Hotel back in June. no one believes me, but he was absolutely on fire that night.

i love the whole Wolf+Lamb crew... more for the vibe of their parties than anything. but i honestly think that Slow Hands, Greg Paulus/No Regular Play, Nicolas Jaar, and Zev are the stand-out talents of the label.

edit // forgot Nico!

hey myra! bored, i take it? my head a'splode.

when we saw soul clap last year they were actually pretty solid, they played the penthouse at vision. this of course was before they started releasing all of the subpar edits and whatnot though.

i've got the day off and it's too early to start drinking scotch.

Soul Clap, imo, gets a lot of unnecessary credit/criticism based on the fact that they are just a couple of small-town boys who blew up pretty quickly by marketing themselves the right way. most people i meet either seem to love them or hate them. it's funny to me how they are seen as the leaders of some "disco edit" revolution, when guys like Greg Wilson and Harvey have been doing it since before Charlie and Eli were born... but the truth is they did play a large part in that sound becoming popular in the techno-hipster-party-circles of modern day. as producers i don't think they're all that special, but i think they are good DJs.

maybe i'm biased, considering i never got onto the "minimal" bandwagon of 2 years ago and i have always gravitated towards the funky/disco/gay house... so i was quite elated when all the Wolf+Lamb guys started pushing that sound, pitched down and drenched in wobbly K butter. delicious.

by far my favorite thing Soul Clap has ever done - http://www.soulclap.us/mixes/liveatmarquis.mp3

"In April 2008 we were hired to DJ two events for a major corporation's top sales people on a retreat in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The first event was a VIP welcome dinner, which took place poolside at the picturesque Marquis Los Cabos Resort. For this event the mission was to create a classy lounge soundtrack that also had energy and appeal for a more conservative crowd. Here's what we turned out."
