One last thing: if any of you are ever around Danbury, CT or Brooklyn, you owe it to yourself to go to a Federal Hockey League game. It's a new minor pro league that started up this year (federalhockeyleague.net) and its entertainment value is ridiculously high. And they have teams in both of those places.

I've been going to hockey games in Danbury since 2005 (when the UHL still existed there) and IMO it's the best place in the east coast to watch a hockey game. A million times better than the Garden, the old Meadowlands, the Coliseum, the Prudential Center...any northeast NHL arena easily.

The level of play in the FHL is slightly below the ECHL, but it makes up for it in the fact that it's old time hockey. Fights (lots of them). Open-ice hits. Interesting goals. Characters on each team. Fucking rowdy fans. Small arenas that are great for heckling. Creative chants and insults.

At Danbury you can stand around the side of the rink for the whole game, which is what I did on Saturday night. Here's what I got for my $12 ticket:

- A 6-1 victory for the Whalers
- Five fights, two of which were a couple feet away from me on the other side of the glass.
- The head coach of one team arguing with Danbury's assistant coach during the middle of the second period, which lead to a near-fight between them in the tunnel heading to one of the locker rooms. After the refs got through the scrum of players the coaches were standing on the benches mouthing off at each other. Danbury's assistant coach flipped the other guy off and got tossed.
- Danbury's goalie saving a penalty shot from a Broome player (the visiting team)
- A player for Broome slashing the back of the leg of Danbury's top player late in the third period, so it starts one of those Avery-like bench ordeals where they're leaning over the side talking shit during the game. One guy tried to reach over and grab the other guy.
- One of Broome's players getting rattled by the heckling of the fans so he starts talking back to them and they verbally shit on this guy.

Then you go back to watching the boring NHL where no punches are landed in fights and the scores are 2-1...it's not even a comparison which league is more fun.

Here's an old video of a league that used to involve Danbury, Brooklyn, and other teams in 2008 before going defunct. It was called the Eastern Pro Hockey League (EPHL). Video taken in Danbury. Danbury is in white and Brooklyn is in red.

Ehh...i love fights...but this just looks sorta pathetic to me.

It's like amateur wrestling night or something.

It's usually not that bad but you never see stuff like this in the NHL.

I'm not a fan of a lot of fights either (they're better in moderation), but the NHL really has no fighting. And the pros are so good they don't land any punches either.

You sure the NHL has no fights? How many fights can you possibly want?

Some games have 2 fights a period. I don't think ive seen a game in a while where there wasnt at least one fight either.

It depends what you view a fight as.

Like last night, when Prust "fought" Strachan, that wasn't a fight. It was 10 seconds of missed punches and one guy falling on top of another. And most NHL "fights" are like this.

Fights in the minor-pro and AHL levels are always better because the players don't know how to defend themselves as well, so you actually see punches landed. The minor leagues also still have that retribution mentality that the NHL doesn't have anymore.

In the minors if a guy takes a run at one of your players, it almost always results in a fight regardless of the score of the game. In the NHL, if a guy takes a run at one of your players, everyone pussies out and lets the guy go to the penalty box instead of kicking his ass. And then they chase him around when he gets out of the box and may fight him, but it's not a given.

The NHL and the minors are completely different games.

Anyone want to do a Devils game sometime?

Posted by osterzone on Nov-10-2010 02:04:

The Capitals aren't going anywhere with Neuvirth/Varlamov as their goaltenders. It doesn't matter how well their offense is...those two aren't playoff goaltenders.

They're not as bad as the Devils though. The Devils suck beyond belief this season.

The Isles lose 14 games in a row and if you look at the standings right now, they are still only three points behind the Devils. And they have two games in hand as well.

I feel bad for Marcello...spending so much money on season tickets only to see his team lose 20-25 games at home this season.

It's quite alright! Unlike most Rangers fans, I don't put my Devils jersey in the closet and wait for a good season!

I was able to see their 5-0 win against the Caps, which more than made up for the home losses I saw before that haha.. We've won our last 4 of 5 home games, I'm not worried about the playoffs, we'll make it, don't worry

I'm beginning to think this is the year the Devils finally don't make the playoffs. They haven't improved at all this entire season, and now Brodeur is back and he's really struggling. McLean got fired today.

The Devils are 18 points out of the nearest playoff spot (9 wins back). That's a lot of ground to cover...

Blown out of your own building by the New York ISLANDERS, and Brodeur shits the bed again.

If I'm Lou Lams, I'm worried right now that Kovalchuk turns into the next Dany Heatley and demands a trade.

Yeah, don't really have anything to defend them on, they play some really heartless hockey past couple weeks. In the beginning months, at least you could tell they tried and just had bad luck, but now, forget it..

I'd rather just see them stay last and get a good 1st round pick, than play decent the rest of the season only to make 9th, not make the playoffs, and not get a good pick. It's rebuilding time.. Our youngsters are pretty good, but this year shoulda been their last year in the minors (most of them), not getting flung up to the majors to fix all the injured holes in our roster...

Oh yeah, and Langenbrunner needs to go right now. Dead weight, waste of a captain..

Don't get too excited.. He's not even 1/2 of a year into his 15 year contract.. After this season, Lou is obviously picking up the pieces and the next 2 years will go into rebuilding the franchise completely around him and Parise.

All of us over here in Ranger nation will gladly give you Chris Drury for Langenbrunner straight up.
