I'm also kind of taken back at how many harsh reviews there are. Don't get me wrong, I was hyped, well duh - fuck ya I was hyped - this was my first time seeing Villalobos and I had high expectations...was I let down? Indeed I was - did I still have a great time? YA I definitely did!!!
I'll give it a quick run down:
Will call line was quick - got in in 5 minutes. No complaints here. Coat check however was retarded but shit happens, right?
It was damn rammed but it wasn't too the point where I let it inhibit my fun. I've been in WAY worse situations as I'm sure most of you have as well. It wasn't pushy shovey which is the main thing I get concerned about with an over-capacity club.
DJ Sneak actually played a decent set, some really fun house to start it off proper. His mixing was spot on and track selection was ear candy.
One thing I was disappointed about was the performance of the Funktkion-one system. This was HUGE pull for me to come last night and I was uber disappointed that they inhibited its potential it seems. There was a point when DJ Sneak upped the system and that made me smile but I felt it had sooooooooooooooo much more potential. Thumbs down on that...
Drinks were expensive as fuck, wow.
The crowd overall wasn't TOO bad. Actually, probably one of the hottest crowds I've seen out in a long time. Everyone was dressed well and lookin' smoking!
Now to Villalobos...

He started off pretty decently actually. His first hour I enjoyed thoroughly. I agree that it is very unprofessional to have a drink every 2 minutes, get loopy and totally get off track but for some reason I didn't mind it as much as others did just for the fact that it is Ricardo and he is clearly known for this. I actually found it amusing watching him sway back and forth with this sadistic evil grin on his face LMAO. That doesn't go to say that I enjoyed his 1hr trip down wacked-lane.
Nevertheless, from 4am-5am he fucking killed it and anyone who didn't enjoy his last hour is off in LA LA LAND. I was jamming hard even in coat check, the tunes were GOOD. He brought out some drums and percussiony techno, mmmmmmmmm!!
Overall I had a great night and it was a $30 well spent for me. I filtered out all the bullshit and took home the positive.
I hope Maison figures out how to improve the output of their brand new system because it was WEAK last night.

I was there and i will agree that it was not his best set (i'd say one of the worst i've heard from him) but to completely bash a dj based on his 1 set and not even know what he's like is completely uncalled for. It's relatively funny that most people that have traveled and seen him before actually know and get that but others not so much.
Vanos if you wanted to hear your "rolling minimal techno" like i always see you post about then you should have gone somewhere else last night.

Last night was a good indication of what he is like imo, if a dj has 1 date in north america for the whole year and cant even fucking take care to anyhow prepare but instead just gets shitfaced before and during his set and completely disregards people around him playing stuff that no one wants to hear, thats a big statement of about that dj's brand/professionalism/attitude etc.

Lol, i obviously didnt expect any kind of rolling techno or other new wave techno or fat pounding tech house but i did expect decent minimal and decent deep influenced tech (yes there is expectation based on brand, you go to see a name dj precisely because there is expectations, not becasue there is a 30% chance he could be good), which i figured would sound decent enough to make me dance on an "amazing soundsystem" advertised by the promoters. Instead we had to listen to 80s music and weirdo stripped down break beat on a week distorted sound while ricardo was getting high on stage....

I also REALLY liked the layout of the club. That size of club is my favourite, not too big but not too small. The washrooms were nice as well. Although, as the coat check was closed, I paid the washroom attendant to hold my jacket. (a suggestion from a friend) and when I went back it was gone! I know it was my own stupidity. But still super shitty.

i personally was only bashing the party which was a total clusterfuck and the first two hours or so of ricardos set that totally flopped for me. I would still go to see Ricardo again obviously, and continue to think highly of him as a DJ... Judging the performance i saw last night and not him as a whole.

The sax track was bad, the 80s mini-set was bad - but once he got off that tangent, I really started to enjoy his set.

If we had all been waiting outside together, I probably would of bailed and gone to another club.
But, even factoring in that, I was taking my sister out for her bday, and her first time going to a club in about 5 years after having her kids, I wasn't going to let it ruin my night.

It was pushy and shovey as FUCK for someone my size... i had some huge guy almost knock me over several times and then threaten to punch me out after me telling him to not body check me anymore... i guess this is my fault for wanting to stand near the DJ booth.

I know that point, and I was reaching it in the lineup. I think if it wasn't for the fact that my BF was inside, I would of gone to Footwork or something instead. I was very close to bailing anyways.
Being the /next/ person in line, watching 15+ people leave the club (and some bitching 'Don't go in, it sucks), then 5 people get in right-away who weren't even in line at all (and everyone else yelling Booo at them), and waiting another 30 min's before you get in was a pain. All the while, watching some guy that was kicked out of the club nearly getting into the fight with a bouncer, a group of people from Montreal chanting for refunds, a girl that flew in from LA nearly having a breakdown at the bouncer, and some E'd up girl putting her hands down my sisters pants, all the while the push of the line was so much on me I'd need to plant my feet firmly and push back on them just so I wouldn't fall over.
I could probably write a 3 page review on the antics I saw in line actually :P Trying to not be /too/ bitter about it, and when talking about it now, some of it just makes me laugh.
