A Good selection of tracks obtained...

M-Audio Xponent at the ready, I think i'll make a decent job of "Vocal House".

Posted by Teezdalien on Jan-30-2011 22:34:

I'm nearly done with mine. Pretty happy having drawn trip-hop, not a genre I usually play, but I definitely enjoy it and have more than enough good stuff already to put together a nice mix.

This might actually come fairly decently, I wonder what the psy heads will think when I'm done. There is one song in particular that I found that is DEFINITELY going on my mix.

Since it was me who suggested psytrance I forgot to point out that I did not meant israeli full on (Infected Mushroom, Skazi etc).

Looking forward to hearing some of these mixes!

Posted by pozz on Jan-31-2011 21:26:

@ Teezdalien & Sand Leaper - thanks. gonna take me a while to listen to all that.

New or not, I don't think something like this would sound too far out of place amongst what I've heard so far. Just luck of the draw, montana, Lews & sand leaper can pull sets from their respective genres out of their arses at anytime and make them sound good. I also note that Lews vetoed UK Funky but it got drawn out still.

I vetoed it, but the veto only applies to the person who vetoes it. It wouldn't work if it got eliminated from the competition all together. It's just a way of rewarding people who have done the competition before and have had to suffer through a hard mix the chance to guarantee avoiding one genre they'd hate to do. I voted UK Funky because I had no damn clue the difference between it and UK Garage and I still don't

Also, while I did get an easy genre, I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you I haven't mixed a pure uplifting trance mix since I first started mixing, so it's been a long time. I've got it mostly lined up and will try to finish it up today or tomorrow, it's just so hard to stay pure uplifting for me. I want to keep throwing in other sub-genres of trance

Bring on the fuckin unicorns, Lews!!!

Posted by Darkarbiter on Jan-31-2011 22:11:

Industrial Strength records also has some good stuff for gabber.

Feel fortunate there aren't actually any decent tracks, so randomly selected bad tracks will sound the same as carefully selected bad tracks

Also on the subject of obscure genres not getting listened, why not have it in the first post if after a while no one has commented on a mix so we can download it and comment. I'd be happy listening to pretty much anything.

Infected mushroom has never been full on.

I really don't understand how you can have such difficulty in telling them apart. Just the syncopation of the beats of the tracks from the two respective genres is clearly quite different, even when you compare two tracks from the respective genres of the same poppy ilk:

It becomes even more obvious when you start comparing the darker and more bass-driven tracks:

Then you add that funky is centered around 130, while UKG is around 140, the extremely prominent percussion in funky that is nearly absent in the swing-syncopation of UKG etc. etc. It just seems very clear to me what the differences are when you just bother to listen to some tracks carefully.

Shit like this is definetly full on in my book. It's just worse than the average full on.

That track sucks, but his old tracks rarely look like full on trance. Astrix, Skazi, Vibe Tribe , Inexus , Cosmic Tone... this is full on.

Tuning in. Tracklist looks awesome

edit: Smooth mixing, teez. I just skimmed the tracklist at first so when the Blue Foundation track started I kinda jumped. Didn't know they were that famous

edit2: oh fuck, been ages since I've heard Frontier Psychiatrist. Tune!
Great mix, you put a lot of work in the tracklist. Very nice variety of stuff. Not all strictly Trip-hop, but a great mix none the less

Posted by Ian on Feb-02-2011 13:40:

worked out what I want in mine and going to try & mix it this afternoon. It's gonna suck transition wise but at least I'll have tried.

Posted by Lews on Feb-02-2011 15:30:

Will download and listen to later Teez. TL looks great =)

I mixed mine this morning, I'll listen to it later to make sure there are no terrible transitions that I didn't notice at the time and then upload it.

Posted by Ian on Feb-02-2011 15:32:

It's absolutely abysmal and probably the worst mix ever for this competition but it's here so I might as well share & hope I get a different genre in the future

Tracklist

seefeel - spangle
xeper - carceres ex novum
autechre - drane
boards of canada - amo bishop roden
nightmares on wax - i'm for real
aphex twin - bucephalus bouncing ball
aphex twin - windowlicker
richard devine - itsuko
mike ink - paroles

I accept no responsiblity for any damage to ears, to computers or laptops from you laughing and knocking water all over them because of how shite it is

Posted by Echo of Silence on Feb-02-2011 15:47:

Ian, it's not a competition, it's a challenge!

I'll listen to both sets now. Ready, set, go!

Posted by Ian on Feb-02-2011 15:54:

a challenge is me mixing anything. I can mix it better in my head but nobody can hear that.

it's not as bad as you make it out to be, around the quality of alot of idm/braindance mixes, the stuff is hard to mix so the focus ends up being on the tracks with the transitions done away as soon as possible. it ends up sounding lazy.

this section i liked cuz the transitions made sense:

i think you should have let the mix simmer for a few weeks and looked more for tracks. the overall feeling is rushed. Not unpleasant -- rushed. did you like anything you found? why did you pick these tracks?
