Do I really need to defend that? It has nothing to do with me. He's using ranking in DJ mags as his frame of reference for other people's successes and trying to make some sort of halfass connection to other people's studios. The implication there is completely ridiculous - ranking in DJs mags is hardly THE measure of a musician's success, particularly for people like M4B (i.e., the person that he was referring to) who don't even produce EDM. And, how any of that relates to another person's tools/resources of choice is completely irrelevant. Are you starting to get it yet?

I thought it was pretty clear I was joking, haha, sorry

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Feb-01-2011 19:29:

i never used the word studio to describe my setup. It is a command centre. Also I thought the magazine was bj mag. In that case I don't have a ranking in dj mag.

I think I've posted this same thought numerous times, but I just don't get the arguments that software elitists throw out there. The implication seems to be that most people using hardware don't have a clue that quality software exists. I don't think there are many producers or musicians on the planet who haven't considered the options or the many pros/cons of using software and, more importantly, in my observations there are hardly any hardware users who don't also use software to some extent.

IMO the software elitists are as bad, if not worse, than the hardware elitists - they're both seemingly on a mission to convince the world that their way is the right way, while the rest of us just use what we want and make do with the resources at our disposal, whether it's a minimal software setup, or a slutty as hell Deadmau5 wannabe studio. It's our money, it's our time, and it's our music and we should buy and use whatever the hell we want and use it in any way that we see fit. We all have different backgrounds, personalities, skill levels, income levels, expectations, priorities, musical styles, etc. and those all play a role in our buying decisions and workflow. Why is that so concept so hard for some people to grasp?

He was trolling, he has hardware too, he's a dick from trance dot nu (it rhymes).

Chill out Cryo :P

no.

Oh, wait, I get it - it's a pun, right?

Yeah, you're right, though. I should know better than to let myself get annoyed by another SW/HW debate. I'm outta here.

It's all subjective and anyone who says otherwise has a small penis.

I think for the most part, people that spout the greatness of software are basically retorting the general elitism or ignorance of those that think hardware is all that and a bag of chips.

Also, I don't think synths qualify as "hardware" . For me, hardware is a guitar and microphones and the analog chain linking those elements to your recording console. A grand piano is hardware, a synth to me is still pretty much software. I understand hardware when recording a violin or singer, I don't understand hardware when recording a synth. To me software has that avenue covered.

The point is...many of you act like you're so important and cool for having those tools when you're actually no one.

Take Andy Blueman, he is 100% software and still he could piss in the mouth of each one of you under any aspect: success as a beggining.

That's why you're pathetic. Oh...I've listened to some of your works...is just miserable.

I use Reason, Record, a General Music Equinox, and occasionally Ableton. Would love to build a studio, and have a mix of hardware and software.

You can definitely do almost anything with a computer and even low-cost software if you have talent, drive, passion, and are willing to experiment.

I've played piano most of my life, so I guess you could say I'm a producer and a musician.

Think live trance/house style music with live keyboard could work?

I know there are a lot of DJs, and I respect them, but I am not a DJ

It's all in how you use the tools.

Even someone with a Protools rig costing thousands of dollars can make crap.

I'd be happy to share what I am working on, and would love to know what works, and what doesn't so I can get better.

He's my favorite artist but this is outright wrong. He's good at what he does but he also pigeon-holed himself into only one specific sound. Granted, it sounds good, especially for all software, but his basslines all sounded very similar to each other and his breakdowns were just a pleasant sounding combination of string patches, solo instruments and orchestral percussion. The only time he really did anything cool with production was that sound during the breakdown transition in Kanya and even then it's nothing revolutionary.

He's an amazing songwriter, no argument there, but as a producer he is definitely not the kind of person you should be pointing to as a benchmark to compare other people to.

That's what I'm wondering as I take my interest in EDM more seriously.

How can you create your own sound, yet stay within a genre?

How can a producer/musician prevent themselves from being pigeon-holed.

It happens as you go along. Certain elements that were once imitation or simply rote procedure acquire a signature individuality. There are artists who's own "voice" is easily heard in whatever genre they're producing in.

Of course, it's true. Software or hardware aren't warranty for quality music. But what makes these people ridiculous, is their attitude of a super-star.

Seems to me that they buy all that stuff just to think they're actually making something when they didn't make a shit cause no one knows or cares about them. This shows how great, super talanted they are...LOL!

Upgrade your standards a little bit.

He's not even close to amazing.

You sound like an Anjuna fanboy, who doesn't know shit about trance and just gobbles up anything that Armada throws out there.

Ever listen to older stuff, like Chicane(not the new garbage) or Tiesto(OLDER SHIT)?

I listen to modern trance now and it just sounds musically crippled. Everything is so cliched its embarrassing. I would not even mind stuff that was average if it was somewhat adventurous.

That's what I'm learning to do, find my own voice.

I must learn to just let things flow, and learn from people like the those on this forum. I hope you can learn from me as well. :-)

One thing is I've learned a lot about how synthesizer patches can be created in software, and I'm even starting to delve into the old ROMpler I use as a controller.

It may be possible that it is insecurity, but I also think that people read and see pro DJs and producers with expensive rigs and think that is what made them successful, so they focus more on the gear than on the music.

With anything creative, there is no one right approach.

I think you do need to be confident in your ability to create, but yes, it is very easy to fall into the superstar attitude. I confess that I have done it on occassion.

I listened to BT's debut album "Ima" recently, found an Ian Van Dahl album at a record store which sells new and used (yes, indie stores still exist) and bought some Tiesto. Seems that progressive house is getting all the buzz these days.

There seems to be a lot of trance influence in prog. house.
