Now there appears to be some serious issues at the nuclear power plant. I'm reading that they're fearing a meltdown.........like they don't have enough shit to deal with already

Just read that myself

Does anyone know if the small islands in the Pacific have been hit by the tsunami? French Polynesia etc?

I'm quite concerned for them as many wont stand a chance against a 2/3 metre tsunami.

quote:
11.11am: Here's more details from Oxfam on the impact of the tsunami on Pacific island nations.

Papua New Guinea: The Boram hospital in Wewak suffered serious damage when it was flooded by waves. Around 50 of the 100 patients were evacuated to the police station compound where most are lying outside. Heavy rains are now reported in the area, causing concerns about sanitation.

The Solomon Islands: The worst damage was in the northern Isabel province. "The water is reported to have reached 50 metres inland and in one village, a house was destroyed and several canoes washed into the sea," said Oxfam representative Joe Weber.

Tonga: Oxfam programme manager Dolores Devesi, said: "There were no waves here, just big tides. People spent the night at consolidation points inland from the coast, but now there are lots of cars returning home."

Samoa: "There were warnings in place all night but the only wave activity looked smaller than Hawaii, which we saw on TV," said Women in Business Development Incorporated, an Oxfam partner agency.

goodbye nuclear plant.

Speaking before the blast, Naoto Sekimura, a professor at the University of Tokyo, told the Associated Press a major radioactive disaster was unlikely.
"No Chernobyl is possible at a light water reactor. Loss of coolant means a temperature rise, but it also will stop the reaction," he said. "Even in the worst-case scenario, that would mean some radioactive leakage and equipment damage, but not an explosion. If venting is done carefully, there will be little leakage. Certainly not beyond the 3km radius."

Indeed. Had it happened 7 days from now, I'd be there!

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Mar-12-2011 14:51:

Maybe it will, since you see fit to joke about it.

Except for the coastal areas of North-East Japan, everything is pretty calm. I came back to Nagoya tonight and I'm yet to see a crack on a wall. The earthquake itself wasn't a major cause for concern - it's the tsunami that screwed everything up.

Lira are any of the keitai networks having problems out there? I'm having trouble contacting friends in Iwate on Softbank, AU, Docomo etc... nothing's getting through. I'm getting the stupid voice recording saying "out of signal" etc

I'm genuinely glad that you and your fi-ants are ok, Lira.

Posted by Lira on Mar-12-2011 15:17:

Thanks

I'm writing a note on Facebook telling everyone what really happened far from the coast. I'm going to paste it here as soon as I finish it.

Ocean: Aren't you in Iwate? How far are you from the tsunami-stricken areas?
