Alright so I was there last night, got there at 5am after I went to avicii. Music was really good but the crowd was...well...very interesting, and yes afterhour clubs definitely have lots of sketchy asians there. Man I'm Chinese myself and I found them sketchy...

Anyway, it was definitely one heck of an experience. I'm still contemplating if I should go back go try some other afterhours club next time. But I did meet this cute punk/goth girl though...

what time did you end up staying till? you should come on victoria day. long weekends are the best time to go. the vibe will be incredible

Sanctuary was actually further west, north side of the street at Claremont. The space under what was then The Paddock was called Death in the Underground and it was indeed a hot, sweaty, sketchy, hella fun space to party. Didn't last long, a year at best, as I recall. Toronto had a massive goth/alternative scene in the mid-80s to early-90s - many (myself included) moved on to the rave scene once it had run its natural course.

Was actually known as Film Lounge for a brief period before it became the Bassment. Was pretty nicely done up. A friend and I had a weekly there and even brought in DJ Godfather for a night in 1999, but the booth wasn't set up to accommodate heavy turntablism and we had to cut his set short. We even had some memebers of Underground Resistance in the house. Such a disappointment, but a good lesson, nonetheless.

Dude goto Circus or Stereo afterhours in Montreal. Either one kills what we have for afterhours in Toronto. They're clean, 10x more girls, 10x less sketchy and both have amazing soundsystems.

if they are actual massage therapists then I say yes...still boring.

To each their own I guess. It was easily the best afterhours club I've been to in Canada. Some may enjoy the griminess of CZ, Bassment club etc. but I was taken back by how sleek and new Circus looked, and how huge it was too.

I think they are actual massage therapists, cuz they charge a lot per time you spend with them.

Hmm if they're registered massage therapists I wonder if you could comp it to a benefit plan from work. That would be, amazing.

I'm not going to trash CZ cause it's good for what it is and we're lucky to have them here. But Stereo/Circus are very different environments and I'd have to say I prefer their approach better. It would be great if someone in Toronto tried to open an afterhours place with the same style but I'm not sure it would even work given the different crowd we have.

PS Chem whatcha talkin about "actual massage therapists"? You tryin to pull a Layton and get a lil tugger on the side? You got my vote if that's the case...

First time I saw d-unity was at basement. Good times.

I think we need a reality show that delves into the highly competitive business of nightclub photography.

I agree! I've been so many times to Stereo, the zone, and recently also to the new circus with the new sound system. I really have to say that all of these three clubs have their advantages and disatvantages. I really like all of them a lot for what they are.

I really can't imagine Toronto without the zone for everyone who love EDM. Cz is more than a normal afterhour, it goes until the next day. Not a lot of cities in the world could argue that there is a club to dance on a sunday afternoon with good music (most of the time)

If I would have to choose one club in Toronto, it would be Cz without any hesitation (same level than Circus or Stereo). I'm not sur also that a Circus or Stereo would work in Toronto. The crowd is very different.

I did that party for Sheldon's (Ni-Cd) b-day, so I planned it all around the tribal. Definitely one of the BEST parties I ever attended at The Basement. It was also my official "last" party there as I had to leave my residency there to be a resident at CZ.

Good memories though...

I was luckily enough to play Circus last fall and it was amazing. It's definitely a different vibe than CZ and the crowd was awesome! They really get right into the music and DJ, and the booth is top notch!!
