I mean I still listen to techno and go to techno parties, my tastes have broadened if anything since I started to go out.
I'm not talking about techno specifically, I'm just using that as an example.
If you started with techno and ended up as a house or whatever fan that's one thing. Another is if you keep jumping from obscure music genre to obscure music genre and just can't enjoy anything anymore then that's a bit of a problem. Like some guy I used to talk to who used to like all forms of electronic music but now "only ever listens to swing".
There's nothing wrong with broadening tastes a bit.
Right on. I guess if it all went wrong I'd be listening to drone and weird idm all day.

wanted to add a couple of points to the discussion here and bring up my own older age and experience. As someone who has been going out and seeing djs since 96 i honestly can say that the art of dj is still alive and well. its just been polluted by a lot of bad djs who are really just producers. can still see some good djing.
also, and to be honest, even back then the djs didnt play or feel the crowd as much as people think. the majority of even the best djs sets from back then, sasha, digweed, pvd, etc, were very similar from city to city. i actually saw sasha twice within a week at two different places and he basically played the same tracks with some minor differences. now dont get me wrong, the mixes and sets were off the hook but this wasnt some random djing based on the crowd. the crowd didnt lead him, it was the other way around and most of the djs understood this and had very strong structures in place that they followed from city to city adjusting on the fly slightly but importantly.
the biggest difference honestly is the crowd and the scene. no offense to some of you younger guys but whats missing is just how wild and communal the crowds used to be. they didnt mind a dj playing different genres and mixing it up. they went along for the ride. now if a dj plays something slightly outside the crowds comfort zone people freak out. also what u dont really see much anymore outside of the festival circuit is djs from different genres on the same bill. that would also add a lot to the scene. and to be really honest, the drugs played a lot into it. honestly back then at least 60-80 percent of the crowd was rolling their asses off while today i think that number is much much lower and the drugs lower quality.
