-- ASOT yearmix 2004 - Was this year when trance hit its first peak? (link & tracklist)

When I think about 2004, I think about Shades of Blue the most. Chilled, twinkly mcprog at its finest, complete with cut up vocals used more as an extra layer of sound rather than lyrics. Still think it's gorgeous to this day.
fucking McProg, I hated it so much. There was some excellent music coming out in 2004 but it wasn't that slow twinkling sound, ugh.
The trance peak is traditionally recognized as 1999, I tend to agree with the consensus there. That being said, excellent trance continues to be played and performed, the solarstone CD, the most recent Oakenfold essential mix being good examples. I'd daresay those have surpassed much of the trance in recent years, though the test of time is still being conducted.

TA as a community is unquestionably 500% more cynical and hateful than it was in 2004, and yet somehow the music that attracted all the cynicism and hate in 2004 is now the subject of the most nostalgia. And I suppose people were saying exactly the same about 1999 in 2004. I can understand the nostalgia. For me 2002 was the last genuinely great year for the old guard of dance music, but looking back 2004 was certainly a lot more respectable than the utter dross of 2005-2007, certainly the three worst years for music I've had the misfortune of living through. |
Once you have listened to real prog you can never go back to McProg.
Once you have listened to "real prog" you can spend the rest of your life debating what "real prog" is.

| Originally posted by Paradox Lost While not it's *first* peak, it marked the earlier portion of what I would definitely consider to be one. That whole period from roughly 2003-2006 was quite a terrific time for trance. ASOT and GDJB were week after week featuring some of the best trance I've (to this day) ever heard, Armin's and Schulz's compilation series had just kicked off what would be three solid years of quality installments, the ISOS series was back and sounding great, production tools and techniques had really begun to pick up... Alex Stealthy, Funabashi, Mark Otten, Peter Martin, Kyau & Albert, Super8 & Tab, Ozgur Can, Mike Foyle, Probspot, Benz & MD, Gabriel & Dresden....yeah...those were some great times. I miss McProg. |
Who remembers this? too bad it was on 05 tho.

Just to change the subject slightly so we don't have yet another Srussell bashing derailment going on again, what would you guys consider this track as? McProg, or standard, traditional prog? I've been on the fence with this one for a while, but regardless of what it's considered, I'll still be loving it for a very long time.
yes that would be the kind of stuff Schulz would play in 2004, starts fine that is the bassline of the period problem is the pads that start around the middle of the song which don't really fit in an otherwise great club track.

2004 hey - wasnt that the year tiesto played the olympics? goddam the olympic album sounded like some whacked out circus music!
2004 was were the decline in what people called trance really set in for me. had some good times during that year - consumed huge amounts of pills and did backflips to waveforce. avb was probably playing the best music he ever will (which was still pretty medicore imo).
all in all a popular year but not really a fantastic year.

Mad respect to the people who still remember Ozgur Cans early contribution to trance this is how I know Im on the right forum.
It seems as if a lot of these songs were made for each other. I love this set because of its impressive tracks and its striking transitions. Shouldnt we pay respect to the DJing aspect of this? If Armin was in charge of putting this track selection together, mad hats off to him.
My fav gang of transitions:
1.1:14:30 1:20:00 holy shit best male to female to male transition I've ever heard.
2.48:00 52:00
3.56:00 - 1:06:00 smoothest and the most smothering
4.32:00 35:00
5.6:40 7:40
6.41:00 43:00
7.10:00 10:40
This is boring to some of you? Please show me whats entertaining to you. Honestly, I would love to hear.
If you love the thunk, post some of your favs

i think we can all agree that 2004 was just an all around good year for music. I'd like to throw up some of the hot progressive tracks for the year if that's not too much of a hijack. after all good music is good music right? hehe
