OT: I can't read or write Polish, but I understand it perfectly and speak it at a basic level. I just enrolled in an online course to enhance those abilities. All the older family members who only speak Polish are almost all gone. Everyone else just speaks English now. I'd like to be the one to keep it in the fam for the future generations.

My 'project' is currently thus:

I've been stuck in a job for 4 years. I have now spent �1k on 4-day trip to Boston in November for a huge Japanese-English bilingual jobs fair. I hope to get a job or at least manage some networking so I can move to Tokyo next year to live with my girlfriend.

�1k is a massive gamble for me, as I don't have much money, but I'm really hoping this risk pays off somehow. Weird thing is, is that I know I'd regret it if I didn't take the risk...



PS Never been to Boston before so all sightseeing advice gratefully received, though I won't have much time for it.

PPS PvD is in town that weekend, also, but I doubt I'll be able to attend...

This is gonna sound gay as fuck, but if you really want something you need to get all thoughts of doubt/risk/whatever out of your mind.

I do believe in the power of intention, only in the sense that your thoughts drive your actions - so you wanna get in the right frame of mind to get what you want.

Having said that, I hope it works out for you!

No joke, I come on here and get beat up to motivate myself.

Polish is a nightmarish language to speak, for me. It's full of sounds that aren't present in English and I really struggle to even hear. Like the difference between their short SH and longer SHHH (technical terminology in the house). Did you grow up with your family speaking it around you?

Yea, for the first five years until my parents split (both are Polish but met in the States). Since then the only time I�ve spoken it was sporadically with my grandparents who barely know a word of English. My grandmother is the only one left, though. In the two times I�ve visited Poland in the past two years, I start to pick it up rather quickly. If I were to live there, I�d be a fluent speaker in no time.

Just the other day I was walking through a park and saw an Indian family. The kids were maybe preschool age. Listening to them speak with one another in what I�m guessing was Urdu took me back for a split second. I perceived it as an omen to focus on polishing my Polish up so maybe one day I can raise my kids to understand and speak it, even as second generation Americans (if it pans out that way). A lot of the second/third generation Polish Americans I�ve met don�t know a lick of it. And I don't blame them, it seems like a difficult language to learn from scratch (I'm no linguistics expert - Lira?).

And writing that I "perfectly" understand Polish is a bit of an overstatement. I perfectly understand all the Polish I hear in the U.S. But when I visited Poland I definitely had some trouble distinguishing dialects (there's five of them).

I'm curious, why are you learning it? I know there's a lot of younger Pollacks who have moved to the UK for jobs. Do you notice the influx of them?

Yeah, one of them is my girlfriend.

I'm not really learning Polish though, as her English is perfectly fine. She just tried to teach me a few words and phrases and I found even the basic pronunciation a real struggle.

Other "projects" of mine right now include trying to rake some more monthly income for my company to be able to actually start paying everyone a bit more survival money. So far having my own company has been very satisfying, and having an actual office to work in is cool.

You're not alone. My girlfriend is the same when I try to teach her something; it's quite amusing.

As long as you can say 'na zdrowie' among the Pollacks, you should be fine

Also just received my book for the CAPM exam which I'll probably take in the new year.

I will also be proposing real soon to my long time gf....
