now to throw in my bit.
I have been listening to 'electronic' music since hmmmmmm 1984 !
i rememeber when house music evolved, spesh over here in the UK in about 1985 - 86.
the chicago and detroit house scene was already well established and the genre came over to the UK and was at first very underground.
Then we started getting the more commerical stuff come out.
Marrs - Pump up the Volume was just that, a highly commercial house track but it worked, it opened many ppl's eyes to house and from that one track in the UK, the scene exploded. (althou for me it was Eric B & Rakim that got me firmly into house)
Other forms of electronic music also evolved thru the 80's, stuff like Kraftwerk and New Order, tracks like Blue Monday which many of u are getting into again at the mo.
Bands like the Happy Mondays were taking over and E was being experimented with back then, bands like 'the Shamen' emphasised it into their music, Acid house then came into being, being aimed more at the commercial side, places like ibiza caught onto the rave scene, rave was the thing of the late 80's early 90's.
the start of the superclubs, like the hacienda was begininng, drugs and hypnotic music were in the press and the focus of the media.
I remember at the time all the massive raves and the fights with the police who were trying to crack down on them.
Then we got the festivals and legal raves happening, the 'raindance' festivals were massive.
anyone remember a group called the Ozric Tentacles ? they kicked off in the early 90's and for me was my 1st taste of 'trance'
The band themselves do not class themselves as trance but their music contained a lot of the elements, hypnotic synths, not a pounding bass beat but a more sublte one which made the music flow so well, i rermember seeing them at an event called 'the strawberry fair' in cambridge UK and they blew me away.
and from there it grew, hell thru the years i even liked stuff from Baby D and Oceanic, daytripper and insanity were great tracks then, and the start of female vocal trance.
drifting back into the 80's for a second, prodicers like giorgio moroda (spelling ? lol ) and shep pettibone were getting in on the remix scene, shep pettibone doing a good few dance remixes of Madonna's productions.
If I had the time and the inclination i could make this a Huge post covering a few pages, i have lived thru more genre changes in electronic music than i can remember, and i am glad of the way trance has evolved, ppl say the best year for trance was '99 and they have a point but imo trance has got better and just this year (2002) have been so many great releases that just put '99 into the shade.
PvD althou not my favorite has been a huge influence on this genre we all claim to love, without PvD's influence and style along with his collabarations with BT, i don't think trance would be quite the genre it is today.
PvD dropped emotion back into trance, Oakenfold was in his goa trance period and yes it was great but lacked emotion, which like i said PvD dropped back into trance.
PvD paved the way for emotional trance.
Ferry Corsten and Armin Van Buuren are also incredibly good both as Dj's and producers and i don't belive any of U here have the right to bitch at them unless You yourselves can claim to be able to DJ or Produce as well as this pair.
Ferry's influence on this genre is just as great as PvD's or Oakenfolds, Ferry has a gift and that gift is to be able to grab your emotions and lift them, no matter what kind of mood i am in, Ferry Corsten always lifts me.

The shamen aka mr.c..seems he has been around forever..recently married if I remember correctly to some mexican girl.
Now I know about the Happy Mondays, New Order n stuff but that was not my time but it must have been around the time where mike pickering and graham park played the Hacienda probably around the time where ACID HOUSE exploded with nicky holloway, paul oakenfold, danny rampling and others. Tho that was not my time
Giorgio Moroder....now there is a name I have not heard in ages....still making music tho.
What got me into house was a song from 1992 which hit #1 in europe and all over the world and deejays still hammer the record

then years later we saw the true crossover potential of artists like todd terry's remix of everything but the girl then boris dlugosh's keep pushin on then......list goes on and on.
