Is this still going on? I obviously missed the deadline but will definitely want to (eventually) contribute.
Jack, there was a point in the second half of part 2 of your set when I was going crazy... the more bass heavy tunes with almost a bit of a swagger. Very awesome work, though I hope to soon listen to it all in one piece for better context.

Finally gave SYS-J's mix a listen as well. I get much of the same impression here as with ziptnf's mix, namely that the precision and structuring of the mix is almost clinical, which is always impressive. You can easily hear the points where it becomes clear to the DJ that the night is still young, and therefore, it's important to keep your powder dry until a few more hours in. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary with the transitions themselves, either.
Even though progressive house is too clean and streamlined for me to really get into these days, the few bits and pieces that stood out from that still meshed well with the meat and potatoes of the mix, such as the Hardfloor tunes, Das Glockenspiel and the Watson/DeGeorgio collab. It makes me wonder how much further outside the genre norm you could have taken it without killing the groove, perhaps with some breaks? No complaints beyond that, though.
I'm gonna try to reupload mine today, whoever wants to hear it, make sure you grab it this time.
Yes, with hindsight my one regret is not playing any breaks. I've generally been pleased to hear from a few people in this thread that they enjoyed the little lulls in the set where I took things down a notch, because I wasn't sure if I did enough of that over 6 hours. But having listened back, I'd agree a little 15-20 minute switch-up from straight four-on-the-floor would have broken things up really well. The simple truth is I just don't come across many breakbeat tunes these days, not at the tempo I play at. I suppose if I'd planned it in advance and spent a couple of days trawling I could have dug out some Bicep-style faux-retro tunes, but it didn't occur to me.
Cheers for listening, anyway. I just need to find a relaxed Sunday afternoon/evening where I know I'm going to be in front of the stereo for four straight hours in order to do yours justice.
Re-upped
So, I finally got through Jan's mix on a slightly hungover Saturday afternoon spent ironing, tidying up, cooking and general living room pottering.
Assessing this mix is interesting because it is based on an actual event, and as with many live sets, what makes sense at home and what made sense at the time are not necessarily the same. Case in point: I found the opening half hour of this a bit of an odd one. After a very lovely opener, you proceeded to get into a party-ish and somewhat goofy vibe very quickly, leaving me at times feeling like I'd wandered into an abandoned Avalanches demo. My conclusion at this point was that the bar in question must have been fairly lively, but before much longer you got into some lovely mellow Chicago-ish tackle from D'Marc Cantu and Jeremiah R and the mood suddenly became a whole lot deeper and more introspective. At this point the mix transformed into a much more conventional dance music set and built up in a fairly linear manner for the next two hours or so. When you went back into some disco and funk after that it made much more sense, as the mood had been steadily building up for quite a while.
Again, without being there, it's hard to judge exactly why you went with that opening half hour or how well it did the intended job. For me, however, this mix starts properly around The Lodge, and anything prior to that can be safely discarded (in particular I couldn't stand that "Plastico" track, Latin music in general being a total musical blind spot for me). Once that's out of the way, however, there's plenty of great music to be found in here, riding a nice balance between variation and cohesion. I particularly enjoyed the way you wrapped it up with the last two tracks. Not everything was to my taste, but that's an almost inevitable byproduct of an eclectic set.
Cheers, appreciate you taking the time out to check the whole thing.
The opening was basically me being a bit too eager to get people in the mood for dancing. At the start of the night, after having played Dopeness and Plastico, I got this sudden alarming feeling that things were building up way too fast for a four hour set. So, I decided to slow back down again and go through a lot more of my slower house tracks before taking the mix back up into the uptempo funk and broken beat territory again. I normally wouldn't do this for a mix put together at home, but I kept it in here to keep this reconstruction faithful to the way the night went.
Finally powered through the 4 hours of your mix at work, Jan.
I both agree and disagree with Jack - I actually liked the Plastico track! Big fan of the Latin flava, and you revisited that vibe multiple times in this mix. In general, a lot of the tracks were hit or miss for me, but there was so much variance that it was all quite listenable. On top of that, your programming allowed for the disjointed nature of the mix to actually work in its favor, where things made sense together, even if they didn't on paper. I would certainly imagine this set worked well at the venue you played it, so props to you for being able to not only construct a set within the parameters of the challenge, but to execute it live, as it was originally intended! Well done on all accounts.
2019 UPDATE
I will start sending out individual PM's here soon, but it's the start of the year and we only have about 4ish months until the next challenge begins. I need mixes from the following users:
mphreak
the-sixth
Mr Game+Watch
djdk
Singularity55
chris1011
Again, there is no penalty for not doing your mix, other than my severe disappointment in you for signing up for something you never did, with an entire year as a deadline
So get it done, people! PM's go out in 2 weeks.
Thanks for the update mate.
I'm struggling with mine at the moment. There are so many different directions I feel that I could take the mix in and I'm at a standstill at what I want to actually record. I'll figure it out soon. I have annual leave coming up this month so I'm going to try and lock myself in the house and get this done.
Zip -
My notes as I listened:
nice transitions especially into the breaks track at 22
monster track 47 mins
mix at 1hr 5mins was an amazing lift of energy
Great mix at 1hr 12mins and what a track (breaks) and great mix out 1hr 18mins
Really picked up after an hour
and after listening I thought part1 was programmed perfectly taking the entire set into account. Nicely sectioned into neat hour chunks for me, mixes were all tidy however I personally prefer longer mixes / transitions but it did not affect my listening experience at all. nice pace with lots of 'moments' despite not being into this new prog sound really I found a few gems in there which I really enjoyed and it transported me away into a daydream like state several times. It was not a productive morning
Did you mix this digitally? Be interested to hear how you pulled it off, was it one take?
Listening to hellweg-dancing-on-mir-part-1 right now and so far this has really surprised me in a great way. Really not expecting this at all so was very refreshing and made me change what I was going to do a little bit
On mine, I have been buying vinyls for the best part of a year trying to unearth forgotten/hidden gems from the past and present and plan to mix them on technics in one shot so thats why im taking so long lol
should be done in March sometime i've almost ran out of stuff to buy

Same with Appleblim - Astral Light Highway / Nullptr - Skyline near the end. GREAT tracks but I was really up for 4/4 rhythms and clubbing at this point and this just dropped it right back down too sharply i felt so never got the ultimate payoff I was hoping for. |

Been having some mental health issues lately. Keen to do the challenge but also realized just how long this is gonna take. Usually takes me like 30 hours to do a 1 hour mix. Gonna have to split this up into 5 parts and get the tracklist/proto mix up for 1 a month then mix them at the end I think. Sorry, just my level of productivity has been all over the place.
I have yet to do this. Partly because I hadn't got a concept clear in my head and partly because life kept presenting me with weekends when I could squirrel away and mix uninterrupted and the snatching them away at the last minute! Bastard
Anyway I now have a clear plan (thanks for the nudge nick) and will be putting some proper effort in, although it still might be some time til I get the opportunity to actually record the thing!
I have listened to all the others and have enjoyed immensely, but I'm working back through them to try and give some more detailed individual feedback.

Interesting. I would like to see a demonstration of your mixing in action, Dave. It has been a while.
So I've listened to both Nick and Sand Leaper's mix in their entirety a few times now. Both are outstanding additions to this competition.
For Nick's mix, I actually enjoyed the beginning of the set. It was the perfect soundtrack to getting going for my gym workouts. As Jack mentioned, I wasn't too sure on the whole transition from that to breaks as to me, it felt like two completely different mixes. As you are ending with some legit prog-psy, and then going into some lighter progbreaks.
That being said, the breaks section was awesome. There were a few transitions that I thought were rushed and sort of messed with the flow of the mix, but at the end there were some ACE transitions that I absolutely loved. I'll have to go back and listen on my computer to pinpoint these, as at the gym I'm not actively checking my phone for timestamps and then remembering them when I get home. This was a proper workout mix for me, kudos!
For Sand Leaper's mix, this to me might be one of the standouts so far in the competition. As you said, it wasn't that much of a gym playlist, but I was able to listen to it a few times on a few long drives I have had to make and could picture the little bar you mixed it at and the atmosphere as you went along in the mix. There were some gorgeous tracks and then of course, some areas of the mix where I wish you continued on with the energy rather than bringing it back down. To me it was a very eclectic and dare I say, brave mix to put together. Your music library is obviously super vast and that is on full display in this mix. That being said, you pulled it off and I think in some cases, the short transitions were needed to mix some of the tracks you put together.
I had very similar positives and criticisms to this mix as the-sixth did, and mainly it was because I personally was in the mood for some continual 4x4 rhythm and dancing at the end. I understand the direction and structure of the mix though considering this was an actual live set with dancers and an atmosphere to consider.
_____________________
In terms of my mix, I am actively going through my vinyls right now. I have decided it will be a combined digital and vinyl mix, moreso on the digital side just because of the direction I want to take this mix in. I was originally going to focus on prog only, but didn't want to over-saturate this competition with prog mixes. I apologize for the wait but frankly, I haven't had much motivation to mix anything other than dnb at the moment. That's been the biggest hurdle for me in completing this competition. That being said, I am putting my ass in high gear to get this competition done.
Alright. Here it is, my rendition of the Marathon challenge. Upon listening to it, it might not seem much of a challenge as its mainly 4x4, but this was extremely challenging for me, largely due to the amount of time it took me just to figure out what direction I want to take this in. Let me explain the conundrum I was encountered with. If you're looking for a TL
R, head to the bottom of the post and download the 6-part set.
So, I was actually super thrilled this was chosen as the challenge theme as I had plenty of ideas in my head. That was part of the problem way too many ideas. I first wanted to do a full vinyl mix, but at the end of the day I did not have the motivation to go through all of my records, dust some off, and listen to them for the first time in years. I would then have to clean every record I had selected for the mix, further adding more time. Combined with everything else I have going on with my life right now, going digital, at least partly, looked far more attractive.
So I started out part digital, part vinyl, but I was having trouble marrying up the sound and theme I wanted to take the mix in. I didnt want to over-rely on one medium or the other if doing a part-mix, and I was already relying too much on the digital medium. Due to the sheer volume of selections I had to choose from in my record collection, along with the near endless supply of tracks digitally, I began to lose even more motivation and stopped really caring for this challenge anyway. That was back in the latter half of 2018.
Fast forward to early 2019, where I figured I did not want to let anyone down, least of all myself, and pretty much forced myself to get going on this mix. I decided that it was going to be full digital for the mix, which might make it boring and studio-like in some parts due to it being pretty much 100% beatmatched, but it is what it is. I started playing around with a few anchor tracks, and built a rough framework of where I wanted to go in the mix and when. I had a few tracks that I was going to DEFINITELY play, but largely a bunch that may fit, may not, very loosely. Sort of the same as when you bring your record case with you to a gig. You have packed up before of a bunch of records you know youre going to play, some floor bangers, and others to fill up the gaps. Thats pretty much what happened here but to a much larger extent.
Honestly, I couldnt stop myself. I found myself going through so many genres that I wanted to focus on for the mix. First, I wanted to play out a no-nonsense, 4/4 pound your feet to the floor house set. That changed to a more melodic techno ala Dixon style mix, which then changed to a more driving melodic mix. This then evolved to a more techy progressive mix and you see where Im going with this. I had so many change of ideas and feelings that I got de-motivated again. This pretty much caused me to hang up the headphones again.
About a month ago, I pretty much said screw it, I gotta get this done. I was thinking a lot about back in the day (which really isnt that far back, but back enough to my partying days), and the amount of fun I used to have DJing back-to-back with my very close friend. Were not that close anymore, living in two different cities and me having distanced myself from the clubbing lifestyle, but whenever we get a chance to hang out its always a good time.
My close friend used to host these massively long parties, usually on a special occasion (New Years, birthdays, long weekends, etc.). He and I used to always provide the tunes, often times mixing back-to-back on a variety of mediums Traktor, vinyl, CDs, you name it. We were known for our abnormally long marathon mixes, the longest one I think we ever recorded was about 12-13 hours long. We literally played every electronic genre we could think of. One night, we started off the night at 105 BPM and ended up at 180 BPM if I remember correctly. I thought to myself, well this would be a good theme for this marathon mix. Not this crazy in terms of genre and BPM progression, but something of that magnitude in length.
So, thats where I went with this. In homage to my younger self, and my close friend, I present to you Timeless. Its a full exploration of a wide variety of genres, but not as eclectic as what we used to play. Its more of a linear club journey something that I believe would work well not only in a dark, intimate club that is open for 12 hours, but in a house party for 20-30 close friends. In this mix, I envision a hypothetical 10PM to 10AM club where in some spots of the mix people are coming and going, going for smoke breaks, chat breaks, maybe even leaving at around 5-6AM, but others coming in at 7AM after having slept the night before and waking up for some early morning dancing. Or, its a no-nonsense, 12 hour long house party with people filtering in and out throughout the night.
I legitimately sat and stood in front of my DJ mixer and pressed record for 12 hours straight this Saturday. Unfortunately, I dont have proof that this was done, youll just have to take my word for it. But this challenge meant a lot to me and doing it in two or three separate recording sessions just wouldnt have done it justice.
It was fairly brutal without a live crowd to feed off of, but I managed to get through it. I remember at 4 hours thinking that I was almost done, but then there was that sudden (and painful) realization that I still had an entire 8 hours to go still. Needless to say, at the end of the night I was absolutely exhausted. If there were any rough spots in the mix, they were kept in. No editing this time around. My tracklist is 150 tracks long, but I had about 220 in my record crate that I was juggling between. I had several spots in the mix where I knew exactly what couple tracks I was going to play, but for others it was on the fly. Thankfully we have a high table in our apartment and our table chairs are a bit shorter than bar stool height, so I was able to mix some parts just like Frankie Knuckles used to sitting down, may he RIP. If I wasnt able to sit down at parts of the mix I dont think my knees would have functioned today lol.
As 12 hours is a massive amount of time, I have separated the mix into 6 chunks which I believe will suit well as individual mixes. However, I challenge you to find 12 hours to listen to this thing fully, if you so dare. It really encapsulates what I would play by some chance Ive been asked to spin a marathon set at an event, or even at a house party with all of my closest friends. Something that fully lets me explore all of the styles I like to DJ (almost!) all in one mix.
**Some notes: The last couple of parts are on the trancier side, so my apologies to anyone who isnt fond of progressive house and/or trance anymore. I also abused Mistique Music a little bit, but meh. Lastly, you also might hear some tunes youve heard before. This is because in the last couple of years, Ive been solely focused on liquid dnb, and frankly havent bought a 4x4 track since 2017. My apologies if the majority of tracks are old now and if youve heard most of them already. The fact I didnt dig around for new 4x4 tunes in the past few years might come across as lazy, but I just had too much going on to dig for 200-300 tracks that would have fit my mixs planned timeframe. I hope you can forgive me.

Bloody hell Chris. That's not a marathon, that's an ultra-marathon.
I have recently moved back to the area where I lived around 2011-12, so I was getting nostalgic for some Mistique-era prog and this contains a lot of tracks I love. There's no way in hell I'll ever get 12 hours of continuous listening time, though.
