The real story behind the Verizon BlackBerry Storm OS?

I want to preface this by saying that the following statements are my opinions and hypotheses, and have not be confirmed nor denied by any of sources of mine or official contacts at either corporation. It should serve as a nice little conspiracy theory, though. Heres the deal:

When we met with Verizon and RIM about the Storm, we asked about the software version. They confirmed it to be 4.7.0.65. We had heard otherwise, just like most of you, and didnt understand why that OS version was so low when versions up to .90 were being talked about, and some demo units in stores showing .75 or higher.
We believed this to be a non-final OS and was partly why we thought the OS would get better before release.
We reported of a Storm shortage last night because of a last minute glitch.
We think that 4.7.0.82, the version of the Storm box I got from Verizon directly was the cause of the glitch, and instead of a new version being flashed on Storms, what they were in fact doing was downgrading the OS to 4.7.0.65.
Now, why would we say that Verizon has downgraded these units? Do we know this for a fact? Absolutely not, and we said that above. None of this has been confirmed to us at all, but heres the kicker check on your Verizon BlackBerry Storm box where the product label is. It should say Version: 4.7.0.65, right? Well, after looking at a box from a Verizon store just now, I noticed a couple layers of stickers. I decided to peel those off, and what did I find? A product label underneath with version 4.7.0.82! So, they realized that there was possibly a huge security vulnerability they couldnt fix in time, started flashing the units with the .65 software in order to not miss the release date, thus the cause of the shortages, the limited stock, and the direct fulfillment units not shipping until December the 5th. Go ahead, you know you want to peel back those product labels with yellow stickers! Let us know in the comments, ok? The pictures are after the break!

the UK and US releases have a lot of glitches in them, that is why telus here has held up the launch to iron our the bugs with RIM, but the storm will be available in the first week of December here

Dude stop biggin' up Telus ... everyone knows ALL North American CDMA carriers are junk. Even if the signal is stronger, everyone is using GSM.

Telus was suppose to get R-UIM cards in 2005

We gave you our theory, we gave you RIMs official statement and now people, its time to move on. The bottom line is that everyone who snagged a Storm from Verizon ended up with v4.7.0.65. The indisputable caveat - v4.7.0.65 has issues. No firmware is perfect and no future firmware revision will ever be completely bug-free, but what we can tell you is that the folks at RIM and Verizon know v4.7.0.65 might be just a little sub-par. How do we know they know? Why else would they be issuing OS updates just a few weeks after releasing the handset? That right people, we got our hands on a preliminary internal communique detailing a series of updates coming soon to a Verizon Storm near you. The first in fact, will likely come next week - just a few short weeks after the launch. Basically, RIM and Verizon have targeted a variety of major issues and will address them through a series of OTA software updates. The list below is split up between issues that will definitely be resolved with the first update next week and issues that will be resolved in a second OTA update that will likely arrive later in December. Hit the jump for the break down and rest a bit easier knowing that whether or not the various issues with v4.7.0.65 are deal breakers for you, Verizon and RIM know there are problems are are working to fix them.

Note that the following is not a complete list of issues that will be covered in the upcoming OS updates. Instead, this is a list of issues being circulated internally at Verizon to ensure that employees do not authorize any Certified Like-new device exchanges for customers citing any of the following as their problems The first is our favorite by far and no, the last one isnt a joke - its really on there.

Issues to be resolved by the first OTA update (Maintenance Release 1) - December, week 1:

If a customer receives a call while listen to music at low volume using a wired headset, the music volume may suddenly increase to the highest level (!). Interim recovery instructions: Lower the volume using the buttons on the side of the handset. When using voice-activated dialing, incoming audio may be muted. Interim recovery instructions: Enter the menu and select Activate Handset or Speaker. The handset may reset itself while sitting idle or while using multimedia applications. No interim recovery instructions provided. Issues to be resolved by a subsequent Maintenance Release:

Customers may intermittently lose email connectivity via CDMA and/or international roaming modes. Interim recovery instructions: Main menu -> Manage Connections -> Select mobile network -> Turn radio off, then Turn radio on. If this does not resolve the issue, pull the battery. When powering on the handset, the radio sometimes does not turn on. Interim recovery instructions: Main menu -> Manage Connections -> Select mobile network -> Turn radio on. If this does not resolve the issue, pull the battery. Pressing the send key while the device is in landscape mode will open the phone application in portrait mode, but the speed dial function may not work. Interim recovery instructions: Press escape until the home screen appears, then press the send key with the handset in portrait orientation. Sometimes entering characters on the virtual keyboard doesnt work. Interim recovery instructions: Re-select the character. Thanks, krazyVZW!

Death of BCE deal revives `Belus' talk

Analyst cites top 10 reasons for Bell-Telus merger but cash constraint, phone regulators a key hang-up

November 28, 2008
Chris Sorensen
Business Reporter

With the $52 billion deal to buy BCE all but scuttled, investors and analysts have once again turned their attention to the idea of marrying the phone company with rival Telus Corp.

More than a year after Telus abruptly dropped out of the race to buy BCE, one Bay Street analyst claims the Burnaby, B.C.-based phone company is still carrying a torch for the Bell Canada parent.

"We believe Telus remains very interested in entering merger discussions," said John Henderson, an analyst at Scotia Capital, in a note to clients yesterday.

A Telus spokesperson declined to comment.

The speculation follows BCE's disclosure Wednesday that accounting firm KPMG is unlikely to sign off on the $52 billion privatization deal that had been proposed by the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and U.S. private equity firms. In its preliminary view, KPMG said the privatized company would not meet the deal's solvency test under current market conditions.

Shares of BCE plummeted nearly 35 per cent as analysts suggested there was little hope of the deal being resurrected.

That left investors looking for an alternative plan.

While the notion of a merger between Canada's two big phone companies is certain to raise concerns in Ottawa, Scotia's Henderson listed 10 reasons why he thought such a deal might be able to win over regulators.

They included $10 billion worth of synergies, a more competitive industry on the horizon and the notion of creating a "Canadian champion" in the telecom sector.

The last point is one that was put forth by Darren Entwistle, the CEO of Telus, in the spring of 2007 when BCE was on the block and private equity groups were circling.

At the time, he said a merger "could be the most critical corporate transaction in Canadian history" and that a Bell-Telus combination would be capable of competing on a global scale should Ottawa decide to one day lower barriers to foreign investment in the sector.

A Bell-Telus union would result in a company that controls nearly all of Canada's local phone service and about 60 per cent of the fast-growing wireless market.

Many believe a merger would be too bitter a pill for Ottawa to swallow particularly in the wake of a recent federal government auction of wireless airwaves designed to encourage new entrants in a bid to lower prices for consumers. There is also the issue of the cash Telus would have to borrow to fund a takeover offer.

"While we recognize the significant potential synergies, we believe the `Belus' scenario will not pass regulatory hurdles," said UBS Investment analyst Jeffrey Fan.

"We believe the factors that prevented a successful pursuit by Telus in '07 are still present, namely the wireless sector."

Rogers launches the BlackBerry Curve 8900

Forgive us for being sparse with the details, but it appears that Rogers has just launched the BlackBerry Curve 8900. Soon Canadians will be able to exchange a cool $179.99 and 3-years of their life (with voice and data) to have the latest UMA-enabled BlackBerry. Weve been told that those who dont want a 3-year commitment will be able to get the 8900 for $499.99 on 2-year with voice and data and $549 month-to-month. Other than that we know jack all because there has yet to be a press release nor has there been any internal communication to management or employees. That said, were confident that the 8900 is launched because its showing in the Rogers library aka the internal God which is where all available devices are listed.

Well be sure to update this post as soon as we find out what exactly is going on.

UPDATE [10:12am EST]: Game on - Rogers is indeed starting to fill retail channels and the Curve 8900 is in stock at Sales Central, sitting pretty and waiting for your telesales orders.

Thanks, SaxMan!

BlackBerry Storm rumor recap: Vodafone BES issues, software update, mass hysteria

We figured that instead of making you comb the internets trying to hunt down the latest information on the BlackBerry Storm, wed compile a nice recap of sorts. Some of it is new exclusive information, and some of it is just other things that have been floating around. Lets get into it

Weve heard that Vodafone UK has absolutely no intention of selling the Storm to BES users until 2009. Were not exactly clear on this (since the two Vodafone Storms we have were converted to a business BES account after purchase), but we believe it means that there will be no direct-to-business sales of the handset. Not that you couldnt as an individual purchase one and simply add a BES plan and convert it to a business account. Were told that the reason of the hold-up is that Vodafone is worried the device, with the on-going hardware and software issues, isnt up to snuff for their corporate users.

For more information on the issues with the Vodafone BlackBerry Storm, hit Vodafones forum. Youll see an enormous amount of complaints about signal reception, buttons falling off, and software issues.

BlackBerry Storm OS 4.7.0.75 seems to be floating around in some circles. Theres been a ton of misinformation out there, but the update appears to be real, and is currently NOT lets stress the word, NOT available to the general public. As many times as you might try to check for updates in Desktop Manager or in the Upgrade portion of Options on your device, you wont get anything at the moment. Well obviously keep you updated on this, but dont get your hopes up just yet.

Some BlackBerry Storm users have complained about the difficulty of pressing edges of the touch panel on their devices. Its a mixed bag, and out of the five Storms weve had, two were perfect and three were terrible. We noted this in our review, and the remedy seems to be inserting business cards or paper (you believe this?) underneath the battery or on top of the battery under the battery door. Dont bother. Just return them and get them swapped out. Its not your problem, its their problem.

In terms of unlocking the BlackBerry Storm, youll have a much easier time getting the unlock code from Verizon. Its rather simple, really. As long as you have an account that is current with no past due charges and the device on your account, you can call Verizons Global Support number and request an unlock code for the handset. Nine times out of ten theyll give you the code while you are still on the phone. Easy. As. Pie.

Any word on when rogers is going to have stock of these? / how did you get one so soon im jealous as fuck!?!

I spent an hour and a half on the phone with rogers yesterday, talked to 4 people (from cs to retentions), and nobody had a clue about what the deal with this phone is. They acknowledged it was in their "library", but their system was unable to process an order for me, or even tell me what my HUP price would be.......HELP!?!

No idea, I don't work for Rogers. I just know friends with quite a few people that work at RIM.
