You're confusing 'European' with 'Czech' and 'Russian' again

The article is in Finnish so it probably won't do you any good.

After the lockout season, the percent of drafted Canadians has gone from a total of 38,7% up to 48%! So it's safe to say that less and less Europeans are getting drafted.

Twentyfive Finns were drafted in 2002, but in the last 4 years, only 34

According to Hockey News there are 14 Swedes in the top 100 prospects, 6 of them will probably be drafted on the first round. Whereas Finland only has 8 guys in the top 100, and only one who's considered first-round material (Joonas Nattinen #27). And 16 Canadians!

There won't be many Finns in the NHL in 10 years if this trend continues

Who do you think will be #1? Tavares or Hedman? Canada has a total of 36 1st picks, Sweden has one

either one is a great bet depending on what the team wants.

i would rather have hedman but that is just me.

there are a lot of canadians drafted, because if you look at the last 5 years, canadians win the cup. The playoffs are rough man, you need that grit. Sure there are more than a few gritty euros, but there are also a lot who are afraid to get hit.

i've gotfree tickets to both draft days, my gf is working in the washington capitals box

I would like to know how many Russians are in that top 100.

A big reason is that the pick expires in 2 years, which means that all drafts that were made before the summer of 2007 are null and void. So it's a lot 'safer' for the teams to draft a North-American.

I don't know how it's 'safer', but that's what I read. Does it have something to do with not having to pay too big transfer-fees, or is it the players being 'closer' to the teams since they play in the same country, making them easier to scout, or some other reason that I don't know about, you tell me.

edit: heart and/or grit does not qualify as an answer

Yzerman, Hull, Robitaille and Leetch enter The Hall Of Fame, kudos!

Always liked Stevie and Luc, but I was never into Leetch or Hull.

Brian "Tackleberry" Leetch

1. Tavares, 2. Hedman, 3. Duchene, 4. Kane... No surprise at the top. But after that I find it almost humorous how NHL-teams pick their players. It seems to be all about size these days. Size is good but I bet most of the late round canadians and americans have dominated in junior leagues just with their size and potential is already used. At the same time potential european skaters are left undrafted or are drafted in ridiculously high number. Unless you are swede when it seems that every swede with ability to skate was drafted this year.

I find it amusing that Toni Rajala, player who got the most points in U18 World Championships making 19 points in 6 games making the new all-time record was drafted in 102nd. Now that's steal from Oilers! I predict that some late-round finns like Sami Vatanen, Erik Haula and Tommi Kivist will make huge impact in a few years or so!

And the last pick of the entire draft was Petteri Simil, huge finnish goaltender which was probably only drafted because he is huge, finnish goaltender. There is no other reason
