Posted by TOR on Aug-25-2005 17:37:

part 05 is ook wel de moeite.. diepe grooves en thumping beats.. my kind of prog

Posted by Jakhira on Aug-26-2005 14:08:

Hij is niet echt prog meer maar ik wou toch ff vermelden dat de site van Roel H eindelijk online is

Speedcats feat. Owen Jarvis - Speedcats [Silver Planet Recordings]

'Speedcats' is one of those singles that comes along once in a while and totally disperses whatever preconceived expectations you had before listening to it. Indeed, it's safe to say that 'Speedcats' is quite unlike anything else you might associate with the Silver Planet label to date. Both of these statements may be rather bold, but this collaborative effort between Philly boys Ben Camp, Mat Leutwyler and guitarist Owen Jarvis is more than worthy of them.

Building on an underlying bed of live percussion and hooky bass, the Speedcats boys manage to create a track that transcends the usual house foundations. The driving tempo keeps it in line with the dancefloor, but the atmospheric moods and guitar lead inject an emotional tangent that draws parallels to some of rock and indie's greats, with the result being one of the most original tracks to have emerged in the last few months.

Holland's 'Roel H' provides his own reinterpretation on the flipside, maintaining the peak moments of the original, but dropping a throbbing electro bassline into the background. Warping and distorting that guitar lead to infinity and beyond, Roel succeeds into turning the track into a low slung slab of pure filth, the reactions to which have already been immense.

A very impressive "debut" from the Speedcats, and with the wide and varied accolades this single has already so deservedly obtained, one can only only hope that any potential follow-up reaches the same heights.

'Tracking Treasure Down' is een heerlijke plaat imo.

Hernan Cattaneo & John Tonks - Warsaw

Superstar DJ Hernan Cattaneo follows on from a string of excellent remixes with production partner John Tonks to belt out a gem called 'Warsaw' on John Digweed's Bedrock Breaks imprint. Two fantastic mixes are provided, the original on a more sweeping progressive breaks tip, while the flip is an onslaught of scratchy beats and gnarly guitar driven breaks.

Smooth but crunchy breakbeats start the 'Original Mix' of Warsaw. A complex and intricate percussive bouncing arpeggiator fills in the gaps while the beats shift and move with lots of drum edits and fills. A delayed melody steps in and takes the lead into a soft break where it slows down and bobs making room for some gorgeous sliding pads. The pads are warm but moody and loom in building slowly behind the the other melody. As the breaks pounce back in, everything builds until a bassline appears and takes the tune on its ride. The bass is thick and moves cleverly up and down moving at a rapid pace until it stops up and halts in silence. The bobbing synth reappears this time with a saucy punchiness to it. The layers of pads slowly creep in again, building up until the song punches back in and explodes into a peak time progressive break.

The 'Big Bass Mix' is a dirtier, filthier version with grinding sounds and a blast of a guitar riff. Funkier distorted drums build while a beeping high falls on top introducing a snarling tone hidden in the background. The tone starts to waver and build into a mid section of pulling intensity. Analog squishy bits fill in the rare gaps, while an acid sound wiggles with complexity inside the insanely huge bass. The drop opens into a funky ass guitar riff that easily rivals the Chemical Brothers sound. The guitar fits perfectly underneath summery toms and big bass booms, and the bassline finds its way back in taking charge of everything and engulfing the tune into a massive peak of distortion and funk.

Hernan and John come out on top with this release on Bedrock Breaks. 'Warsaw' is a beast of a tune and with two very different mixes, you'll be able to find your own niche, whether its hard and grindy or lush and progressive.
