Wish I had a photo of our family's "car phone" from the early 90s!

It was ridiculous! (comparatively, hahahaha)

SO HUGE. SO "not" potable (outside of the car)

what happens when VoIP starts getting more popular? I think it's pointless trying to enforce this kinda stuff.. you might as well ban it on buses and streetcars too if that's the case

That's what I mentioned before .... some will use Voip, all the uneducated people won't know what the hell it is. At least its better then everyone talkin' on the phone.

That will be a while, after Bell and rogers stop disrupting VOIP traffic on their networks. VOIP is sooooo cheap right now, and there is absolutely no reason for anybody to have a traditional land line.

- $70 for a VOIP ATA (modem)
- $10/month for kick ass service.

You would start saving money after 3-4 months, and enjoy way more features, and free long distance in North America.

DSL News

Um...so In Mississauga, switched from Bell to Acanac. Before I left bell, I noticed I was getting http downloads around 1MBps, which I thought was odd, and chalked it up to unreliable stats.

Now I have been with Acanac for a month, and just did an internal speed test and got:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 13407 kbps (1675.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 587 kbps (73.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Yes, you see that right. I have no idea what is going on, but my speeds just went nuts! I am still being throttled hard, but at least web downloads are fast.

According to Acanac, they have entered into a agreement with TecSavvy to install their own equipment at the switching offices, to offer new DSL on their own terms, and off of Bell's network. They are trying to offer 20Mbps service for next year, and even IPTV!

do you have a Dry-Loop with your connection and if so is it worth it? i don't have a landline where i live but I'd like to get off Rogers and want to avoid Bell DSL

Internal tests should not be used to test speed.

The speed to the CO is not what makes a connection fast (it is only a single factor). A heck of a lot depends on routing, provider's pipe, network capacity, etc.

A more reliable measure is you to a variety of external-network servers.

I used to have dry-loop with Acanac, an extra $7/month. If you sign up for the full year, then you are only spending $27/month for the first year anyways. So you are still saving huge. After the first year it will go back to $40/month + $7 for dry loop.

If you want to switch, I would do it very quickly. Bell has instituted new bandwidth rules for resellers: old customers will continue to get unlimited downloading, new customers (as of Jan '09) will be limited to 60GB/month.

Agreed. That is why I mentioned I was getting 1MBps+ from other http sources as well. So it is most certainly confirmed.

Very interesting thread. Paul is the owner/admin at Acanac, and is very open on the forums. I suggest you read the entire thread, for all the info, as it is posted over a few months. The thread also has info on Acanac's upgrades, and future plans.

This could be the new Treo w/ Palm OS - Nova ... yikes, it's FUGLY!

If it's confirmed, the 680 is my last unit I'll use from Palm.

BTW - if you are already with Bell, or have a DSL modem, you don't have to get Acanac's. Pretty much any ADSL modem will do. My acanac one was not working, and I called in for some tech help, and he just told me to use my old Bell modem; popped in the new username/password, and worked instantly. I think I even have a couple old ones laying around, lol.

I wanted to try Acanac ..., but it's so unstable.

It's a 50/50 chance it will work, regardless of the DSL modem.

How do you figure its 50/50? They have 40,000 customers in Ontario and Quebec.

From my experiences, using Acanac at two different places, in two different cities, it was Bell fucking with my system after I switched that caused any problems. They were mad that I switched, so they messed my lines, and caused my speed to drop, the first time I switched. This time, no problems at all, just super fast speeds.

BTW - I don't work for Acanac, I was just so sick of Bell, that I will help anybody switch over.

Let's just say ... i see so many ppl shipping those modem back b/c they didn't work & cancelled their account. *Those are the dumb ass* Then you have some ppl who swapped their modems with another one and still didn't work.

I would love to switch ... but really iffy on it. God damn, how am I gonna get a modem, those things are like $100.00

try out teksavvy.

getting a modem isn't that expensive actually. those 2wire modems that you can get at some small computer stores are really cheap. something like 25-30$

Oh too bad. I suggest just going with what ever they give you. They will charge a $50 deposit for the modem, which you can get back if you return it. If you can as for just a modem, without the router, then do that, as most routers from ISP's suck anyways, and you want to use your own.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ... time to make a little trip to CanadaComputers and PCV for the modem.

So guys, today I broke the LCD screen on my N82 while changing housings. Tiny little crack at the very top in the middle. Hardly noticeable, but enough to drive me to drink.

Fuck me.

$40 for another LCD on the way. Sucks, but live and learn. I could never be a surgeon.

ON ANOTHER NOTE, I currently have 2 netbooks sitting here.

An Asus EEE 1000HA, and an HP Mini 1000 (1035NR).

(Asus on the left, HP on the right)

The EEE's keyboard sucks. Period. It's awful. A horrific bilingual clusterfuck of epic proportions. Nothing is properly sized, and many keys are just, wrong. All wrong. Nice machine otherwise, but I think it's ugly as all hell. It's getting returned.

The HP on the other hand, is perfect in almost every way. Slim, nice to look at, very light (2.25lbs!), and still rocks the 10" screen. Has Bluetooth too. The only drawback is the 1.8" 4200rpm hard drive, but that's not a concern of mine. I didn't buy these things for speed, I bought them for travelling and light internet/work stuff. The HP's keyboard is the same size of that on my old 13" laptop, which I have since given away. It's got that WWAN SIM slot too...
