DSL News
Um...so In Mississauga, switched from Bell to Acanac. Before I left bell, I noticed I was getting http downloads around 1MBps, which I thought was odd, and chalked it up to unreliable stats.
Now I have been with Acanac for a month, and just did an internal speed test and got:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 13407 kbps (1675.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 587 kbps (73.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Yes, you see that right. I have no idea what is going on, but my speeds just went nuts! I am still being throttled hard, but at least web downloads are fast.
According to Acanac, they have entered into a agreement with TecSavvy to install their own equipment at the switching offices, to offer new DSL on their own terms, and off of Bell's network. They are trying to offer 20Mbps service for next year, and even IPTV!

| Originally posted by rabbitjoker Internal tests should not be used to test speed. The speed to the CO is not what makes a connection fast (it is only a single factor). A heck of a lot depends on routing, provider's pipe, network capacity, etc. A more reliable measure is you to a variety of external-network servers. |

| Originally posted by Orko I used to have dry-loop with Acanac, an extra $7/month. If you sign up for the full year, then you are only spending $27/month for the first year anyways. So you are still saving huge. After the first year it will go back to $40/month + $7 for dry loop. If you want to switch, I would do it very quickly. This could be the new Treo w/ Palm OS - Nova ... yikes, it's FUGLY!
If it's confirmed, the 680 is my last unit I'll use from Palm.

I wanted to try Acanac ..., but it's so unstable.
It's a 50/50 chance it will work, regardless of the DSL modem.

From my experiences, using Acanac at two different places, in two different cities, it was Bell fucking with my system after I switched that caused any problems. They were mad that I switched, so they messed my lines, and caused my speed to drop, the first time I switched. This time, no problems at all, just super fast speeds. BTW - I don't work for Acanac, I was just so sick of Bell, that I will help anybody switch over. |

God damn, how am I gonna get a modem, those things are like $100.00 |

| Originally posted by Orko BTW - if you are already with Bell, or have a DSL modem, you don't have to get Acanac's. Pretty much any ADSL modem will do. My acanac one was not working, and I called in for some tech help, and he just told me to use my old Bell modem; popped in the new username/password, and worked instantly. I think I even have a couple old ones laying around, lol. |

So guys, today I broke the LCD screen on my N82 while changing housings. Tiny little crack at the very top in the middle. Hardly noticeable, but enough to drive me to drink.
Fuck me.
$40 for another LCD on the way. Sucks, but live and learn. I could never be a surgeon.
ON ANOTHER NOTE, I currently have 2 netbooks sitting here.
An Asus EEE 1000HA, and an HP Mini 1000 (1035NR).
(Asus on the left, HP on the right)

The EEE's keyboard sucks. Period. It's awful. A horrific bilingual clusterfuck of epic proportions. Nothing is properly sized, and many keys are just, wrong. All wrong. Nice machine otherwise, but I think it's ugly as all hell. It's getting returned.
The HP on the other hand, is perfect in almost every way. Slim, nice to look at, very light (2.25lbs!), and still rocks the 10" screen. Has Bluetooth too. The only drawback is the 1.8" 4200rpm hard drive, but that's not a concern of mine. I didn't buy these things for speed, I bought them for travelling and light internet/work stuff. The HP's keyboard is the same size of that on my old 13" laptop, which I have since given away. It's got that WWAN SIM slot too...
^^ What was the price difference?
