cool thanks ... as for tiesto's adagio for strings i got Bb/A#-minor However, the old version mixed by ferry is in d#/Eb-minor. When i try the cords with the track by tiesto the relative major sounds so much better to me for the A#minor which is Dbmajor (right?). This isn't easy ... but ... i will keep trying...

I've got both of these marked as Am. Anyone else?

*Edit: the Slusnik Luna remix almost sounds like it changes key (to F?) after the breakdown right up until it begins winding down at the end. Maybe its just me but Am only sounds juuust right at the beginning and end.

Question for all you, what do you do with this key information after you have it? I was thinking of cataloguing it all in a database, but what good will that do when you are spinning out at a party?

I am considering buying a bunch of those labels that go on envelopes, and slapping on the top of my record labels. Possibly even color coding them to this:

Posted by xmotleyx on Jul-10-2004 04:12:

i bought some clear sleeves online so i don't have to stick anything on my records. Besides now they are protected, lord knows some of my older ones are ready to fall apart now. I bought some small labels and I write the key, number, track and bpm on it. I put the a sides in the upper left and the b in the upper right. I really do not like to plan my sets too much so i figure this will help me with my live playing to be sure that everything is in key.

For those of you that are having trouble keying, please post everything you key so we can all compare. or put them at brian's site and let us know you did. then we can help each other out and confirm if we are doing it correctly.

Also, i am keeping a list in my computer using rapid evolution. a small but nifty program once u get used to it. it helps keying too. at least to see if might be right. but comparing here is better i think ...

i posted some key questions above without any responses.

oh yea... remember if you are keying out mp3s that the person who ripped them may not have had their turtable zeroed while ripping thus messing up the bpm and keying

Posted by Briden on Jul-10-2004 04:39:

hmm.. yeah, that sounds like a good idea, plastic sleeves, with stickers on them.

I will start keying my records once i get a feel for it, right now, i'm just gonna leech and label the ones that are already done.

What happens to the key when u change the pitch by 3%...or 6%?

The actual key changes completely at about 4.5% (ish). However if you think about it, at 3% the change is already so considerable that you might be better off actually playing that track with the next key rather than it's original key.

Also the other thing to remember is that the most important thing is that you want to compare the difference in pitch between the two records and not the 0 point.

Cheers

When u pitch up the song by 4.5 %, does the key change into the next step on the Camelot wheel? ie. 1A to 2A.

Posted by xmotleyx on Jul-12-2004 23:43:

sure it does ... it is not all the way there but it is close enough for rock n' roll sort to speak. It is actually somewhere in the middle but closer to the next note. I forget the term for it, but usually it is close enough to mix with the next half-step. However, 1a does not go to 2a it jumps to 8a. why? 1a is Ab minor, and 8a is A minor (one half step increase).

cheers...

That's right. The actual numbers in the camelot scale don't follow the chromatic scale. They follow their own which is designed to help you know what goes with what rather than any order of things... if that makes sense.

Thanks for the help guys...

I know most of you said that trance songs that are written in a Major Key are rare but after I keyed my whole record collection, I found that a little less than 1/3 of my records are in Major Keys. Does that sound about right??

Posted by xmotleyx on Jul-14-2004 15:59:

not sure about 1/3, maybe high??? who knows...

as for your tracks why dont you post them so we can all compare and be sure all of us are right. i am going to be posting my list after the weekend. As soon as i am finished my first crate.

cheers...

Would have to say that it sounds a little on the high side as I can only think of two in my record box currently out of 110. But it does depend on your music tastes totally so it may be so.

Depends on how you did it. If you used software the chances are that some of the are totally way off.

Sorry to sound a nOOb, but how do you actually set it up to find the key? Do you spin the record on the deck and play some keys on your keyboard and see which ones fits best with the song, or is it certain parts of the song. Please explain if you don't mind, thanks.

Posted by xXxAzNrAvErxXx on Jul-14-2004 20:56:

I keyed by playing my records and using the piano program downloaded from DJ prince's harmonic mixing website. I played the keys while the song is playing to determine which key the song is in...Maybe I was doing it way too fast since I was trying to rush and key all my records asap. I will post my list when I get home from work today to compare with what you guys have....

Hey there,

I can see that there are a ton in there that are not major. Perhaps you want to have a look at the method you are using to find this out?

E.g

Tenshi is not a major key.
Loops and tings is C minor.
Solarize is a minor.
Rising star
Blank and Jones - Cream

To name but a few...

It seems as if you are getting the root right in most cases but have trouble defining major or minor.

If you have any questions just ask.

Cheers

You are right...after double checking a couple today...they are all minors... I think my problem was I didn't play the tracks loud enough last time I was keying...and plus I was rushing through it..doing it way to fast.

Posted by rafale on Jul-20-2004 16:07:

I'm a little confused..

Both Nu NRG - Dreamland and MMDC - No More Rain are supposed to be in G# right, so they are supposed to sound good with each other.
but when i mix them together.. well it doesn't sound that good. Could be just me.

Also, G# is the same as Ab (A flat) right, so it should go well with both Cm and Bb minor ?

I don't really understand the deal with the major and minor scales.

Yeah you're right there... Ab is the relative major of F minor, which goes with Cm and Bb m
