I had found out that Phonak is the Australian distributor of Etymotic ear plugs - a number of telephone calls confirmed this. As long as the clinic requests musician plug attenuators from Phonak, they'll be Etymotics. |

Yes that's right djway. It's a walk down from Wynyard railway station, or walk up from Town Hall railway station.
Master_Yoda, both Excellence In Hearing and Clear Sound Hearing Services should be easily found in www.yellowpages.com.au, that's where I found them. I did a search for "Hearing aids" and they were part of the results.
I hope mine are ready tomorrow. If not, then it'll be in the new year, which means I'll probably use foam plugs during these holidays.

I use , for years now, a set of very common plugs made by Earmo.

They are about EUR 25,-- and this include shipping.
Actually this product is not listed on the site. You have to call them and ask..
They use this kind of earplug as a 'guestplug' for production areas to protect the visitor against loud noises.
Use them frequently and you'll end up buying a new set every 2 years.
They are perfect!
They suck-up about 20-25 dB's and even more on the realy dangerous noises.
So they realy take the kick out of the noise.
Parties are just MORE enjoyable if you don't have to worry about the longterm problems of loud noises..
I can stick my head in the speakers and not need to worry..
You have only one set of ears.
But after reading this topic, i might go into the hearing-aid buisiness 
And make a LOT of money!

i got some pretty cool plugs, got them from my local chemist for $4 and they are like a silicone sorta putty gel stuff that moulds to your outer ear. they are apparently reusable, but i dunno how many times, ive worn mine a few. wore them at 5am b4 armin and 'twas all good...
i use teh clear putty ones.. they work pretty decently too.. they don't cut out any individual frequency, so I still enjoy the tracks, just at a much quieter level. EVERY time I go into put my phones in the mixer, the phone level is either FULL, or very HIGH.
OH MY GOD!!?!? If you need it that loud to hear, then youa lready have some serious hearing problems.
Loudest I ever have it at icebox is just around 1 3rd volume, with the booth monitor barely on. And I can still hear my tracks extremely well.
Maybe it's your headphones? I dunno. I have the HD-25 senheiser's which are very clear. Maybe they are louder at the same volume setting than other phones? i dunno.
but guys.. seriously.. turn the gain down on your phones!!! It's one thing to listen to loud music form speakers.. its a completely different story when you are ramming the sound down your ear canal from 5mm away!!!
sound is all about displacing volumes of air, and there isn't much air in your ear canal.. so it's easy for a paif of headphones to do damage, coz they end up displacing your ear drums too!

Yep, when i came on last week the headphone was on full (and this was at 11:30) I kept it at full but I had my earplugs rammed in so it was ok.
hmm.. i feel i need to get a pair right about now.

w00t picked up my ER-25's from Hearing Life in Burwood for $180 today. damn, shoulda told em i wanted a diff colour when i did the mould.
anyways... they fit nicely.. just need to test em out now 
to better hearing for everyone!

i would love to use them while djing but i know cam said he still struggles with this.

how were they at tiesto? was it clear? could you hear conversation? comfortable?
yeap they were very comfortable, although sometmies i was a little paranoid that they might fall out 
when tiesto dropped some of the epic tunes i took them out and it was amazing at how much of the high frequencies they cut out
on the drive to Home i tested them out, and i strained a little bit to hear what some people were saying in the back seat, but in the nightclub, i could hear conversation as well if not better than the next person
that night was the first night that my ears havn't been in pain for a week afterwards
If you're going to buy custom ear plugs make sure you specifically state "Etymotics". When I went to Excellence In Hearing the guy had had no idea, I had to also tell them that Phonak are the ones who fit the filter into the moulded plug. It took a bit of investigative work and quite a few phone calls. I guess after they had successfully done my ones the process would be smoother for you guys.
I feel that the ER-25 may cut too much sound out... I'm wondering whether using filters that are one step weaker would be better.
Also, even though the Etymotics are the best in the market, the attenuation is still not perfectly flat. The higher frequencies are still cut out a lot. This of course can affect the level of enjoyment and appreciation of the music. As a consequence I don't wear them as often as I should, to the detriment of my hearing.
I think I have a bit of tinnitus myself... every night before falling asleep there's an incessant high-pitched ringing in my head. It's not loud enough to drive me crazy (yet?). Do you guys experience the same?
